I don't think there is any other album where I don't have to forward a track (being 10 tracks short certainly helps its cause) - but even if it was more than 10 tracks, the form he was in at the time (in his teens mind you) was just mindblowing.

It must suck though, to peak at your first album. All downhill from there. Kinda like Snoop, but not as bad.

The only other albums I could potentially listen to without skipping is Me Against the World (minus a couple of tracks), 7 Day Theory (minus a couple of tracks), and Wu Tang Forever (minus a couple of tracks).

Everyone's opinion is their own on hip hop but TBH modern hip hop is almost valueless. There is no innovation at all. Just formula, repeated ad nauseum. They are little kids standing on shoulders of legends.

36 Chambers
Fear Of A Black Planet

Are two utterly ground breaking and innovative albums which set the scene for so much that followed. Straight Outta Compton was amazing in the day, although aside one or two tracks its mostly rubbish.

Mainstream commercial hip hop is worthless IMO. And I say that as a retired musican who used to play in hip hop acts. Yep they let whitey play the bass

Good post.
Just as you liked your own era and me my own - I am sure there are people out there that think Wayne and Drake are legends of the game and nobody can ever compare and they will scoff at anything that comes after.

Been on Nas for the last week. Didn't really like the new album, so made a mixtape of my faves, many from Illmatic made it

Don't know about GOAT, but I have my faves and Illmatic is not there :0

Me best Album was...

Mobb Deep, the Infamous 1996 with the best tracks of all time being Shook Ones and Survival of the fittest

Hell on earth 1996 by them had a good few joints on them too

Kinda lost way after that, used to love Nas

Best rapper/lyricist of all time - Notorious BIG

I am a huge Nas fan and like the fact he produces fresh tracks and not the normal formulaic crap like Kanye or Jay Z

I would certainly rate as good as BIGGIE but, no-one could spit bars like him.....

IMO BIG had a sick flow but i think Nas' 92 flow beats all....next I think its BIG L, AZ and prodigy of the past who all IMO tie with BIG in terms of flow

Only thing going against it is that its far too short.

Nas has been soo consistent over such a long time, has put pretenders like 50 cent in his place, demolished JayZ,made ground breaking tracks and has evolved as a person.

I can pop in BP3 or WTT and Jayz is still spitting the same things he was back in the day. Nas is making grown man music. He is the GOAT.

Check out a mixtape called prematic or something. Its got some demo cuts on it. A must listen for a Nas fan.

Yep, I guess hip hop reached its peak for everyone at different times.

I remember talking to DJ Shadow one time (the one time I met him lol) and he thought everything after about 1988 was completely worthless as far as hip hop music went.

Mainstream hip hop has been a joke for a long time now, jay z, kanye, lil wayne 'fake drake', i cringe when i listen to any of their songs, dmx, nas are brilliant old school rappers who have kept it real and stayed true to themselves.

The underground scene in the US and UK is in a much healthier position with guys like immortal technique, diabolic, vinnie paz, and lowkey, akala, english frank, logic, all brilliant lyricists.
