ICC names umpires and referees for England-Pakistan series
Monday, June 12, 2006
ICC names umpires and referees for England-Pakistan series Staff Report LAHORE: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday announced umpire and match referee appointments for upcoming Test and ODI series. The appointments cover Ireland’s inaugural ODI against England at Stormont on Tuesday 13 June, the five-match ODI series between England and Sri Lanka that begins on Saturday 17 June and Pakistan’s tour of the UK, including four Tests and five ODIs. Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, a member of the Elite Panel of ICC match referees, will officiate at the Ireland – England ODI and he will do likewise for the five ODIs between England and Sri Lanka. Lloyd will be joined in Ireland by Elite Panel umpire Darrell Hair and Roger Dill, the Bermuda fireman who recently became the first member of the Associate and Affiliate umpire’s panel to stand in a ODI when he officiated in the Bermuda-Canada-Zimbabwe tri-series in Trinidad. Hair will also stand in the first two ODIs of the England – Sri Lanka series, on 17 June at Lord’s and three days later at The Oval, before Billy Doctrove, recently promoted to the Elite Panel of umpires, takes over for the matches at Durham (24 June), Old Trafford (28 June) and Headingley (1 July). In each of these England – Sri Lanka ODIs, the ICC umpire will be joined by an appointee of the England & Wales Cricket Board. The first three Tests of the four-match England – Pakistan series – at Lord’s starting on 13 July, at Old Trafford beginning two weeks later and at Headingley starting on 4 August – will be overseen by Elite Panel match referee Ranjan Madugalle. Former South Africa all-rounder and another Elite Panel member Mike Procter will then take over for the final Test of the series – at The Oval commencing on 17 August – as well as the five-match ODI series that follows. Simon Taufel, the ICC Umpire of the Year and currently in action in the West Indies – India Test match in St Lucia, will stand alongside his fellow Elite Panel umpire Steve Bucknor for the first two Tests of the England – Pakistan series. That duo will then be replaced by Doctrove and Hair for the final two matches of the series with Doctrove standing in his eighth and ninth Tests but his first since joining the Elite Panel. He will then stay on for the first three England – Pakistan ODIs, at Cardiff (30 August), Lord’s (2 September) and Southampton (5 September) before his fellow Elite Panel umpire Daryl Harper takes over for the final two games, at Trent Bridge (8 September) and Edgbaston (10 September). In each of these ODIs, the ICC umpire will be joined by an appointee of the England & Wales Cricket Board. The appointments for the Scotland – Pakistan ODI, in Edinburgh on 27 June, and the matches between the Netherlands and Sri Lanka in Amsterdam on 4 and 6 July will be announced in due course. Bucknor is fine, if anything he tends to favour us. Hair though...
FOR GOD'S SAKES HE LIVES IN ENGLAND. How are they considering him a neutral umpire |

Hmm, I don't know really. But I don't rate him as an umpire ever since then, when yes Moin Khan was being a prat, and Bucknor was being an even bigger prat. Secondly, when he gave the ludicrous lbw against Tendulkar in 2003/4 vs Australia. The bowler was Gillespie, and he appealed, and appealed and got tired and turned away. And then it was as if Bucknor woke up and sent Sachin packing. And the worst part of it was that it was missing all three stumps by a distance. |

There's a limited number of ICC umpires and we have issues with quite a few.
If it hadn't been Hair it would be Rudi, if neither then Billy. And so no reason for shock or anger. The positive is that there's Taufel for two tests and Bucknor (who's been pretty good with us over the years). |

can never forget what doctrove did to us during the pak vs WI 3rd test match in 2000, where he repeatedly gave walsh not out, when he was clearly out and walsh stood his ground, just so that their record against not losing the series to pakistan could stand.

Rudi is actually ok.
I mean he is a crap umpire but he is just an idiot.....I don't think he is biased. He will be just as likely to screw us over as he would England. Darrel Hair on the other hand is a biased cheat.....and there are no two ways about it. No other side to the coin, no other point of view.....NOTHING. He is a biased cheat and that is the end of the matter. I am far more worried about him. |

(most of them where doosras or srt8 1) Doctrove how the HELL! did this make it on to the lite panel. one of the worst umpires i have ever seen and that series V WI in their backyard we didnt win coz of him! good to see taufel three top quality umpire and probaly best in world. where is billy bowden at least hes not biased. (plus hes funny) |

Darrell Hair for the win
He gives us 95% of decisions. Its obvious why Aleem Dar isn't umpiring but he loves us as well. No Billy Bowden who has been practically English since the Ashes is gutting... On Bucknor, I don't think he'll favour any team in particular because he is just rubbish. A lot like Koertzen and Harper, he is far too easy to influence, wouldn't know a legit LBW or nick behind if it sat on his head, and will give dodgy decisions against everyone. I think Doctrove is ok and will improve as he stands in more tests. Taufel is the best by a mile. |

I'm an England fan at the end of the day, if he is more likely to give decisions which will help us in the games then I'm not going to complain. I try to come across as impartial as much as I can but all I want in the end is England to win. As you can see, Rob and I have no shame in wanting to see the England fans behind those stumps...

What I will not forget is when Kaneria was on a hat-trick and on the hat-trick ball which quite clearly was plumb, Kaneria appealed, Hair looked away after a second, giving a look if disdain, as if to say "Do you really think I'm going to give you that one?" ![]() |

I remember that and my hate for the racist Hair has only grown for not giving that out. It's ironic when Bell took that catch off Moyo, Hair was the one who gave it out and didn't bother referring it to the 3rd umpire or giving the benefit of the doubt to the batsman, but when Kaneria bowled the hattrick ball and it was plumb he wasn't interested! Also how many times did Hair give a warning to Salman Butt and another batsman for running on the danger area when they were not. Face it Hair is a racist mong and the sooner he leaves the better it is for cricket. |

If the dodgy catch was so obvious to everyone around the wicket, then Taufel would have overruled it seeing as Hair asked for his opinion. Let's face it, if the best in the world Taufel doesn't see something in the middle (he had a better view than Hair as well), then who will? If the umpire at Bell's end and the square leg umpire are convinced it's out, it isn't going to go to the 3rd umpire anyway. The ICC dont like things going to the 3rd umpire if the 2 umpires in the middle agree on a decision, it makes their own umpires look weak. The time when Salman was out the next ball after running on the pitch was not Hair's fault - Salman DID run on the pitch and Hair is perfectly entitled to send him back, it just seems that half the time umpires can't be bothered to use that rule. It doesn't mean they arent allowed to though. Hair didn't bowl the next ball which happened to trap Salman in front, Udal did. Hair did his job and gave Salman out. The hat trick ball - I'll give you To call him a racist mong is quite serious, you could at least not use such strong words. He is a poor umpire I agree, but I doubt he sits at home on an evening and throws darts at pictures of Asian players on his wall. He was elevated to the elite panel for a reason, because he was better than the guys who aren't elite - and as long as the ICC want a large panel to share the workload of the umpires, he will stay on it. If you study some of the umpiring at lower levels it is woeful, far worse than anything you will see from a test match umpire. Remember, elite umpires officially get 95%+ of decisions right, can't argue with the stats. As fans we have to accept that when they make a mistake its just human error, as we all do in our lives - at school, college, uni, in our own jobs, whatever. Whether or not he is racist cannot be proven empirically for obvious reasons.
But lets not forget he was the first man to noball Murali in 1995/1996, and has a tendency to pick on the Asian players, most recently when he gave Inzy runout which was quite clearly against the rules. You might call it a coincidence... |

...which has me thinking, in 1995/1996, Australia were playing SL at home, so why was Hair umpiring (since he isn't neutral)??

I dont think Hair's decision to give the hatrick ball not out was racist. Why is that? When a still was taken, Hair's head was about 6 inches outside legstump. SO obviously he'd think a ball on middle and off was outside offstump. Not racist but incredibly incompetant and unfit to umpire in any form of the game

I don't know about that decision but at other times, Hair has been incredibly racist, denying clear cut decisions, and warning players for no real reason. He really shouldn't be allowed to umpire anymore, imo.

Daoud no one is calling him racist for not giving the hattrick to Kaneria we are merely saying the decisions that go against us every other time and other asian teams when Hair is umpiring is racist.

Darrel Hair is blatently biased against the Asian teams. Every single time he umpires in a series involving an Asian nation there is some sort of controversy. It can't be a coincidence if it happens every damn time.
Hair is a biased cheat. The sooner that pathetic excuse for a man is flushed out of the game of cricket the better. Plus he lives in England so he shouldn't be allowed to umpire England games. He looks like a penguin anyway....we can't have penguins umpiring games can we. |

Just seen in the England innings today, that Billy Doctrove twice missed the fact that the batsman had edged the ball. I also rememeber in the u-19 WC final he also missed the fact that an Indian batsman had edged the ball. And of course most painfully for Pakistani supporters, he missed the fact that Jimmy Adams had edged Wasim Akram in Antigua in 2000. A bit worrying when an umpire keeps making the same mistake, especially when that umpire will stand in two Tests later this summer. |

At least you have avoided Rudi.
He has been a woeful umpire, especially for the Windies. He had a field day on our last tour of Australia. The ball just has to hit Lara's pads and he is sent on his way by dear old Rudi. He was pretty onesided on our last tour of England too. Has given Lara out wrongly over 10 times in 8 tests! |
