The scientific theory is that he is attracted to horizontal lines and bright colors.

Octopus slain in revenge

AN Argentine TV presenter furious with Paul the 'psychic' World Cup octopus has horrified viewers by liquidising one of his relatives live on air.

Paul became famous for correctly predicting the result of eight consecutive World Cup clashes — finally picking winners Spain for the final.

But presenter Roberto Pettinato, from Argentina's 'A Perfect World' programme, wanted revenge after the tentacled soothsayer called the results so well.

Argentina fans blamed him for their World Cup exit after he correctly predicted Germany would beat them and some have voiced a desire to eat him.

So after branding the animal a "Nazi" he grabbed an octopus live on air and claimed to be killing it as he hacked its head off and put bits of it in a blender.

Pettinato said as he lowered him into the machine: "Your moment has arrived, little Nazi octopus."

Paul the octopus had a 100 per cent record during the tournament.

William Hill has revealed punters won up to half a million pounds backing the mystic mollusc's predictions.

But some angry German fans called for him to be thrown into a shark tank after he predicted their semi-final loss to the newly crowned World Cup winners.

It had been reported Paul was born in Weymouth, Dorset. He now lives in Germany's Oberhausen Sea Life aquarium.

But since erupting on to the world stage Paul has been unmasked as an identity cheat.

Far from being born in the UK two and a half years ago, aquarium staff have revealed he is only four months old and was caught in the Mediterranean off the Italian coast.

This means he is a completely different octopus to the one who successfully predicted some of the results at Euro 2008.

They are getting to him through his family. Apparently Paul himself has retired.

Don't worry I did get the joke

Re the Serbia flag, why not? It has horizontal lines, and you can't get brighter than white.

Yes that is true though some shades are lighter than others and the theory is those are the colors the octopus goes for.

He just got lucky.

In each instance Paul has a 50/50 chance of being right/wrong. He 'guessed' correctly 8 times, and the probability of that is (1/2)^8 = 1/256. Which is pretty good guesswork, but it's the same as picking up a coin and calling the toss 8 times in a row. There have been cricket captains who've done this, but we don't call them psychic do we?
