Britain’s Pakistanis ask Zardari to act against PCB

Britain’s Pakistanis ask Zardari to act against PCB

LONDON: Leaders of the Pakistani community in Britain have requested President Asif Ali Zardari to make sweeping changes in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

According to well-placed sources, community leaders told President Zardari in a meeting last week in Birmingham that Pakistan’s performance on the ongoing cricket tour was embarrassing and a direct result of the PCB’s poor selection policies.

Pakistan were bowled out for just 72 in its second Test against England in Birmingham on last Friday. It was Pakistan’s lowest-ever total against England and came just days after the tourists lost the opening Test by 354 runs in Nottingham.

“Prominent leaders of the Pakistani community living in Britain requested President Zardari to take concrete action in a bid to save Pakistan cricket,” said a source, referring to the fact that as PCB’s chief patron Zardari has the right to hire or fire the Board chairman.

Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, has been under fire from various quarters for the Board’s policies and many critics believe that he is directly responsible for Pakistan’s disastrous performance in England.

Fortunately for those of us in Britain we can spend time lobbying Zardari about cricket, we're so lucky that he doesn't have trivial issues like violence or natural disasters back home in Pakistan to distract him from the real problems.

OF course cricket takes priority over trivial affairs such as the natural disasters, threat of terrorism and bad economy plaguing the country.

Disagree.

Zardari is the president of Pakistan and patron of PCB by choice. No one has forced these responsibilities on him. The public expects him to pay attention and to do both jobs competently. In short if he can't handle the responsibility then he needs to step down and let someone is more able to do the job.

Seems like an easy way out for Zardari. He should grab it.

Fix up the PCB and people will start liking you again. At least that's what this article is showing. I am surprised Asif Zardari has not already become bent on fixing the PCB.

Ijaz Butt may be replaced by Zafar Altaf in October

Too long to translate but basically it says that Zardari may replace Butt in October at the completion of his tenure of 2 years. Butt was going to serve (haha) until 2011 world cup but team's performance, unfair team selections and mismanagement promoted the protests from media, fans and ex-players.

So, the rumor is that when Miandad met Zaradari, he told Miandad to stop criticising Butt since he will be removed from PCB in October when he completes his tenure of 2 years.

Parliamentarian demands removal of Ijaz Butt

Iqbal Mohammad Ali, a leading Pakistan parliamentarian, has appealed to the country's president and patron PCB, Asif Ali Zardari, to remove chairman of the cricket board Ijaz Butt, who he felt was responsible for the continued deterioration of the national side." In a scathing two-page letter written to the President, Ali argues that Butt's administration has seen the team reduced to the status of "minnows."

The last year has been a particularly torrid one for Pakistan, their win in the ICC World Twenty20 last year followed by a disastrous tour of Australia. Several senior players were either fined or banned by the PCB in the aftermath of that tour, though most of the punishments were overturned soon after. Currently, after beating Australia in the Headingley Test in their ongoing tour of England, they capitulated to scores of 80 and 72 in their two Tests against England which they lost comprehensively.

"The chairman and his close aides have shoddily let down your confidence in them by making a mockery of management ethics at the board," wrote Ali, who also heads the national assembly's standing committee on sports. The standing committees of the upper and lower houses cannot take direct action against any organization, but they can pass on suggestions to the government.

"It is therefore recommended that a very dynamic and energetic administrator be made the chairman of the board so that the affairs of cricket in Pakistan are run professionally. (The) incompetence of Mr. Ijaz Butt has already brought enough shame for our country at international level."

Former players like Aamer Sohail, Abdul Qadir and Iqbal Qasim held senior positions in the PCB but resigned and Ali blamed Butt for their departure. He said they quit "due to egocentric and autocratic attitude of Mr. Ijaz Butt."

The board has also seen through five different Test captains in just over a year - Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan, Mohammed Yousuf, Shahid Afridi and Salman Butt - and Ali said Butt and the management were responsible for such a "comedy of errors."

Ali also alleged that the present team manager Yawar Saeed, whom he said was close to Butt, was supporting certain "groups of players in the team which is destroying the unity." However, he didn't elaborate on the players involved.

Butt took over as chairman from Nasim Ashraf in October 2008.

The honest truth is that Zaradri doesn't act because he doesn't need to act. He ripped of the Pakistani tax payer and made US $2billion and that was before he even came to power. He was then officially 'elected'. It's no wonder he thinks he can get away with murder (which he effectivley is doing by a total lack of response towards the 14 million flood victims, who he is leaving to die). Anybody who speaks out against him is killed. The media and internet is banned.

Now please, if someone couldn't care for the lives of 14 million people, how concerned will he be about the selection of a cricket team? Answer: He couldn't give a damn.

Even though i've no idea who Zafar Altaf is....it'll make no difference what so ever. We'll be getting rid of one useless crony of Ghaddari with another useless crony of Asif Ali Ghaddari.

There is a simple and quick way of doing the "right" things. Let every British-Pakistani chip in a quid and we will have enough pounds to put on the table and order zardari to act against PCB.

Think British Pakistanis should really be asking Zardari what he is doing about the floods, or why is he even here when his countrymen are suffering. Any Western Leader would have cancelled foreign trips during a domestic crisis if only for popularity reasons...of course when you are a de-facto dictator popularity at the polls isn't a problem.

Also British Pakistanis should be asking what safeguards Zardari will put in place to prevent aid money being ziphoned off into Swiss bank accounts.........er...........um...........er..... .....that sounds really stupid in writing ..........ok best stick to easier things like cricket!
