Nil Satis Nisi Optimum: The 2010/11 Everton FC Thread

I've been roped into the local Everton supporters club.

Been told they play The Barcodes this Saturday. Checking the schedule tells me that means GAs boys Newcastle.

Season hasn't gotten off to the hottest start though the club will take some heart from the manner in which they came back in the 3-3 against Man United last weekend.

Yep we play you this weekend - would gladly accept a point right now, despite Everton not having the best of starts to the season I expect them to beat us with ease

Moyes has built a good side - has plenty of options although has been unlucky with injuries

The one thing though that I dont get is Distin, the guy is a bit of a donkey - why loan out Yobo and keep Distin? Makes no sense

Yeah to be honest don't really know the team that well to know what's up with the Distin situation. Seems like Heitinga should be in central defense instead of midfield so maybe they will opt for that change. Maybe drop Fellaini back into more of a holding midfield role.

Then again one bad game against Man United of all teams shouldn't necessarily mean you give up on Distin. Also he is probably the right man for the job against Andy Carroll as he matches up well physically.

Yakubu looked good coming off the bench last week so he'll be looking to get a start.

Rotten start continues with a 0-1 against Newcastle. Didn't see the first half today, apparently they were woeful. Two great chances to tie things up in added time in the 2nd half, just one of those days where things don't go your way. Not having Cahill due to injury was a big big blow but still they were very wasteful with the opportunities, especially some really poor crosses into the box.

Newcastle looked good. Everybody was tracking back to help out in defense. Ben Arfa had a stormer today, running circles around the Everton midfielders. Coloccini as well, always at the right place, especially in the penalty area.

On to London next weekend to face Fulham, which won't be easy. Let's see what can be salvaged if anything. League Cup game as well this Wednesday.

I'm pleasantly shocked at today's result - seem's like we executed our plan well and all the players were really up for it. It helped that we didnt have a liability in Alan Smith on the pitch plus in Ben Arfa we had someone who could produce a bit of magic - looking forward to football first later on

It really has been a poor start for Everton - they just need to get that first win and they need injuries to ease for them

Have a soft spot for the Blues !
Everton are slow-starters and usually peak after Christmas, however the race is very competitive this year for European spots so you have to get your skates on.

Btw,is Heitinga any good ? Moyes seems to be persisting with him yet the likes of Bilyaletdinov is benched or dropped ?

I think Heitenga is a good player BUT not sure why Moyes plays him in midfield - better off playing in defence - especially ahead of Donkey Distin

My brother is a hardcore Everton fan. There's a simple solution to Everton's woes. Put Fellaini back into holding midfield where he is class. It was the same last year. Fellaini was being wasted as a target-man and Everton struggled. He went into holding midfield (His natural position and what caused Everton to spend £15m on signing him from Standard Liege) and revitalised Everton's season.

Howard

Heitinga
Jags
Distin
Baines

Pienaar
Cahill
Fellaini
Arteta
Bilyaletdinov

Saha

Job done.

I think you're being a bit harsh on Distin GA. He has been poor this season so far but I think once Everton string a couple of victories together he'll show his class. Hibbert is a weak link. Coleman should be ahead of him in the pecking order.

Bottom of the table. And out of the League Cup.

Didn't see the game yesterday. Apparently Timmeh did well to keep them level.

Draw at Craven Cottage isn't a bad result I suppose.[/stretching for positives]

Birmingham 0 - 2 Everton

Excellent result as Birmingham had a bit of a home unbeaten streak going. So a bit unexpected.

Saw the last 20+ minutes today. Good to get that first win though obviously would've been nice to get it sooner.

Defense looked solid. Distin did a good job on Zigic, while Fellaini marked him well on setpieces.

And wow Birmingham also have Hleb now? Looks to be a good squad they have.

OH NOES!

The Red Sox owner John Henry wants to buy Liverpool.

Man I love the Red Sox, almost as much as I love the Pakistan cricket team. This is only the first season since 2005 that I didn't go to a game at Fenway.

If this deal goes through where would it leave me as a supposed Everton supporter.

What if Liverpool's name was changed to Liverpool Red Sox? Where would your loyalty lie? The two best clubs in the world (in their respective sports) or David Moyes/Tim Cahill?

^Liverpool Red Sox would be such a silly name it'd be pretty easy not to support them.

Thing is though now every time I go to a Red Sox game, or heck even watch them on TV, I'll be contributing to Liverpool's success.

I honestly don't really have a problem with that. The problem lies in the fact that I've been roped into supporting Everton. Now the same guys who got me into their supporters club are saying they'll never go to Fenway again. I'm afraid that's not an option for me. I was a Red Sox fan first. Everton came later.

Also I don't care enough about Everton to want to hate Liverpool. I like the team because I like their players and their manager, not because of who their fans love to hate.

See this is why I hate this whole club business. This is never a problem with national teams.

Lovely rant I must say. I can see where you are coming from though. Red Sox are your first love and I don't think your love for Everton is genuine enough. You have already stated that if you had to pick between RS and Everton it would be RS. I suppose you can support both (RS and Everton) but you really don't have to think that by buying RS merchandise you would help Liverpool. The revenue Red Sox makes they keep and not donate it to Liverpool. Technically they are different companies and each one keeps their own

Similarly my first love is Liverpool FC but I am also a supporter of Ottawa Sens and therefore an enemy of Habs (Mtl Canadiens). Habs were owned by George Gillet until last year as was Liverpool so I had a similar conflict of interest. Although having a deep rooted hatred for Gillet did make things easier.

Great result and 2 great goals by Cahill and Arteta.

Everton's 2nd goal looked dodgy today, Yakubu was offside and obstructing Flappe Reina's view. The best part though was when the fans started chanting "Going Down" and the TV camera focussed on Liverpool's new owners.

I dont think the 2nd goal should have stood - he was blatantly obstructing Reina's view and by the time he saw the ball it was too late cos Yakubu was in the way

I also think the Spurs goal should not have been given

Cahill's class. Him and Mickey, doubt they are going anywhere. Also Manny's owned by the White Sox.

My friend who's a lifelong Everton fan said this was the worst Liverpool side he'd ever seen. Everton were decent just in the first half but the oppo couldn't attack to save their life.

Cahill's the heartbeat of this team. Arteta is going to play for England soon haha. I didn't know about Manny I guess I should start following the Red Sox more closely now.

Yea it is probably one of the worst sides, the only side that can come close would be the ones that included josemi and nunez and baros as the centre forward.

The lack of confidence though was what killed them. They didn't know what to do with the ball and were so scared of losing it. Rodriguez and Lucas being in the team really doesn't help because they go nowhere with the ball. Babel or Jovanovic should have started in all honesty. Also putting Rodriguez and Carra both on the right was one of the worse tactical decisions I have ever seen. Both lack pace and skill so really it took away any chances of us creating from the right. On the left we didn't have an natural left winger or forward so once again nothing. From the middle we had Lucas.

Haven't really kept up with Everton's season after the first couple of months. But King Louis gave the fans something to cheer about today. 4 goals in a 5-3 win over Blackpool, who all said and done probably should've won this game.
