We could do with a bowler like Pathan

Our 'gully' bowlers are useless....

I for one have held back in my judgment on this lad...he is still young and has a long way to go before he reaches his potential...but i will say one thing he has the potential to be a very good allrounder for india...and although he can sometimes get smacked around he does have a nack for taking wickets...

most bowlers peak at arnd 28/29 years of age...even flintoff has only now reached his potential...and he is 28 years old...thats why i say give sami time...similarly pathan must be given time to flourish..

all i got to say is...when we say crap.we mean he is nowhere near the calibre of wasim akram, which soo many indians compare him to. he is not even fit enough to stand in the same room as him.

its like saying gul is the next mc grath. Mcgrath is a robot. if u put a needle on the pitch and ask him to pitch the ball on top of it, i can bet you he will with his very first ball.

Well Mohammed Sami bowls quicker than any bowler ever played for India and probably ever will, but only one problem; It seems faster Sami bowls, faster the ball keeps reaching the boundary..Kinda funny in a way....

I was replying to Hussain's post not yours man. The moral of the storey is; pace is not everything, Umar Gul is not that quick but he seems to be a potential star.. And regards to Afridi, man I have seen Afridi hit Brett lee striaght over is head for big sixes as well as mcgrath and every other bowler but the rest of the world doesnt bat like a live or die like Afridi does everytime.....

The last time Pathan played Pakistan, he got hammered by Afridi, then when he came back, he got hammered by Youhana. Then it got even worse when his over was stopped cause of the beamers he bowled (actually the fact that they were dispatched to the boundary by Youhana - the very batsman who was tormented by him just 6 months previously made it EVEN worse).

lankans are among the worst travellers in business . the whole world recognises this fact, unless there is a worldcup in the heart of jaffna , i wont rate the lankan chances very high . that said they did win the 96 worldcup but that too was in the subcontinental conditions ..... aah well

i think indians sufferes from "over hype , we are number 2 disorder ", they forget that lankans had india for dinner in the 5 matches that were played in lanka recently, conversely its only fair that india if anything should win the matches that are played in india , so y is it such a big deal?

to put things into perspectice, i wouldnt count all the eggs yet. india were 2-0 up , against a much weaker pakistani side , yet surrendered by losing 4 matches in a row . so until this series is sealed , keep it real, but i guess the lesson is far from learnt sigh.....

also pak play india real soon , the last time teams locked horn , afridi sent pathan into an year of depression. what makes u all think this time would be any differant. if anything , the pathan is playing infront of his people . and this is an established fact, afridi raises his game 10 folds when playing against india. so errrrr .... errrr .eerrrrrr.....good luck

Nobody could play Pathan last year until the ICC Champions Trophy game when Afridi came to the crease. After that he hasn't seemed the same. In the tests he didn't swing it, and in the ODIs Pak were just on a roll and everybody got spanked out of the park.

But left arm fast bowlers are rare and valuable, thats why irfan pathan has so much appeal.

no what i am saying is , its a differant ball field the one dayers and tests , just becoz india has won 2 matches doesnt make em better then lanka in tests...... get it. hence ur comparison was flawed.

No I dont, lets revisit the logic:

1. You were putting down India's performance against the number 2 ODI team saying that they are the worst travellers.

2. I state that if they are so bad while travelling how did Pak not manage to beat them in tests last year

3. You say that you were talking about ODIs

4. I ask a question to you that are they bad ODI and great test travellers then?

5. You give a completely unrelated answer

India are already a better test side than SL, all results over the last few years prove it.

And I am not getting carried away by these ODI performances either. But the fact is that India has comprehensively outplayed the number 2 ODI side in the world in 2 matches. There is lots to be done and its just a begining, but a good one. BTW, it wont hurt to check SL's ODI record in the subcontinent(away from home) before classifying them as a nonsense side. You dont become the number 2 team in the world and reach the WC semi finals in SA by winning only at home.

O so till a bowler reaches 27 or 28 it gives him the right to fail constantly..do u know Waqar was just 24 yrs old when he took his 200th test wicket and was 25 when he took his 200th in ODIs...a good bowler is a good bowler, younger they are the better their bowling should be.
Its just excuse to wait for so long for a player to come good.

Samis bowling average(Tests) is like a top order batsmens batting average ,he hasnt performed to his potential at all,its high time he wins matches like Ws did.

TO me he isnt going to last as long as wasim did. Physically wasim was much more talented. I also believe, since wasim didnt spearhead the atttack till the 90's his career peaked normally. Patan is not that physically talented so I have reservation of his potential in the future. Also wasim had an abundance of pace. This guy reminds me alot saleem jaffer but thats just me.

this thread was started to say that it would be better for Pak if we had more bowlers like Pathan which is fine because he bowls at decent pace, more than vaas, and also he swings the ball both ways. What's the fuss about? I reckon Pathan is a talent, nobody compared to Akram, and around 7/8 years time will be a great fast bowler.

pathan has one delivery...the inswinger...he's a decent bowler for indian standards but to be a superstar you have to be able to swing both ways and reverse it with pace...wasim and waqar could do that...pathans lack of pace and inability to consistently swing holds him back from being a true upper echelon bowler...but his decent bowling combined with his batting make him a very useful player...indian fans shouldn't embarrass themselves though by claiming he's the next wasim...

I dont think any sensible Indian fan compares him to Akram. It seems more a case of Pak fans building up the impression that Indians compare him to Akram to have a go at him.

To add to the fiery debate about Sri Lanka, no doubt they are a good team in the sub-con conditions. Today was not very sub-continenesque like, with the ball swinging early on(similar to NZ and ENG). And as we saw in New Zealand and in the ICC CT Lanka failed to play the moving ball. They barely scrapped through to beat Zimbabwe!

Pathan cannot bowl the out-swinger. Good batsmen will play him as an in-swing bowler.
