Creative writing
Any creative writers here? What kind of writing do you do? Anyone got published?
I like to write fantasy and adventure stories. Haven't had anything published yet. Simply because I haven't turned anything in yet. I always feel it's not perfect and then I get back to re-writing and the it's not the same. The last couple of years, I've even had trouble concentrating for long and therefore don't really get much done. Anyone else who has been successful in this area? Any tips for me to overcome my focus/attention problems?

Agreed, its hard to write without staring out of the window !
The trouble with me in my old English class was that its difficult to get an idea of what to write about. Its usually when you're GIVEN a good topic to write about, then I can get going. Once you get going and get a rough visual idea of what to write about,THEN I put pen on paper. I like the fantasy, horror stories, descriptive writing.

Nice! The problem with me is, that there are a lot of ideas in my mind but when I sit down to write, I can't seem to know where to start. Once I start, it comes out in a flow and I tend to finish a part of it. Like a chapter. But then the next day when I re-visit it, I always seem to be dissatisfied and that turns me off of continuing it. This is frustrating! Because the ideas stay in my head but I guess I am too much of a perfectionist and that hinders my creativity.

I'm no expert but.... my advice is to 1) Try to get everything in your mind down on paper or laptop (as soon as it enters your mind), as fragements 2) Then get it into a strucure 3) only then fine tune it - ie change bits you dont like etc. If you have a creative mind - it will shine through in the end! |

Try to work on structure, build up your story, keep it flowing but also especially in fantasy and horror, you gotta have a visual image in your head, just pretend as if you're actually there. You can express yourself really well that way,but you gotta keep focus, relax, the ideas will flow. Its about getting into rhythm so to speak. ''My heart was thumping. The creaking of the door was ringing in my ears.I saw a vile, bony set of fingers grasp the door as ever so slowly(keep building the atmosphere up,get a visual idea of this scene),a shadowy figure appeared in front of my eyes.(then keep it flowing)''

I do like writing but the thing is that I feel that my sentences are too amateurish and not upto the standards.I have tons of criticism in my writing when I write.
And that puts me off sometimes.

I am a writer of fiction and non-fiction - yes, have had some of them published.
Writing is one form of expression, and a medium of communication. Creative writing is manifestation of the imagination, whilst non-fiction writing requires study, research - a grasp of the subject or topic that is being written about. Both are forms of self-expression. Write about whatever you wish to communicate - the following are some ideas: a) write about you b) about your experiences, observations c) about your ideas and beliefs d) free your imagination to roam where it will - let your pen do the talking/walking. e) write about creation/universe. |

Thanks to everyone giving their input. I appreciate it!

Also, I have a bad habit of going into too much detail and background. Even though it is fiction, and many times, fantasy, I want everything make sense. You know, common sense. So I would go into backgrounds of everything. If a girl is wearing a blue dress, has brown eyes, and short curly hair, I start thinking about WHY that is so. Why a blue dress? Which parent did she inherit her hair and eye color from? Does she have siblings, if yes, then how many and what do they look like? I try to bring logic into everything. I have read in many stories in which, to keep things simple, the characters are few. And for that, we see a lot of 'only childs' in the story. But that doesn't happen in real life, does it? Almost everyone has siblings. So all that kind of useless stuff keep me bogged down and I go into all these background details and lose the actual plot. And that's a nice little synopsis you've given there. You into horror?

The following is an article written a few years ago. It needs editing and updating - but if you find it helpful you may use it, either to compose your own piece, or to quote from it. Islam - The World Religion The word "Islam" means "surrender" or "submission" ie., to the Will of God. This word is derived from "Salaam" which means "peace",("Shalom" in Hebrew.) The word for God in Arabic is ALLAH. In Hebrew the word is very similar, ELOHIM. God has an infinity of Beautiful Names and Perfect Attributes, however ALLAH is the One Name that enfolds and encompasses all the others. The two names which appear at the head of each chapter in the Qur'an except one (ie., Chapter 9) are "AR-RAHMAN" meaning "The Most Gracious"; and "AR-RAHEEM" which means "The Most Merciful." The word "Muslim" means "one who surrenders" or"one who submits", to the Will of God. Thus, a Muslim may be described or defined as one who has attained peace by submitting his or her will to God. Islam is not a new religion, it is, in fact a continuation, and confirmation, of the earlier two monotheistic faiths, namely,Judaism and Christianity. The spiritual centre of all three faiths is Arabia, since it is in the regions of Arabia where all the Prophets lived and preached, and so this is the place where Judaism,Christianity and Islam emerged. The Holy Books - The Torah; The Psalms Of David; The Gospels; and the Qu'ran -were revealed in Semitic languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic respectively. These three Semitic languages are all derived from one single language. The word "Qur'an" means "discourse" in Arabic. The Jews and Christians are described in the Qu'ran as "People of the Book" and "People Of The Reminder", ie.,followers of the earlier Revealed Scriptures, granted by God to Moses, David, and Jesus. The Qur'an makes mention of twenty five Messengers, beginning with Adam and ending with the Prophet Muhammad, as well as referring to many others not directly mentioned by name. There are frequent mentions of Noah, Abraham, Lot, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Mary, and Jesus. The Bible clearly predicts the advent of the Prophet Muhammad: Deuteronomy xviii,15 - In the words of Moses; "The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee,of thy brethren, like unto me;unto him shall ye hearken." Deuteronomy xviii,18 - In the words of God; "I will raise them up a prophet from among thy brethren, like unto thee, and will put MY words in his mouth." Genesis xxi,13 "..of the son of the bondwoman (ie., Ishmael) will I make a great nation because he is thy seed." Genesis xxi,18 "Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation." The Prophet Abraham was the father of both Ishmael (his eldest son born of Hagar) and Isaac (his second son born of Sarah). The long line of Hebrew Prophets are descended from Isaac and Jacob (ie., Israel, his son), and the Prophet Muhammad is descended from Ishmael. St.John, 16,7 "Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.." St.John, 16,13 "..How be it when he, the Spirit of Truth, is come, he will guide you unto all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.." The Qur'an states: Chapter 2, Verse,62; "...those who have attained to faith (in this divine writ),as well as those who follow the Jewish faith, and the Christians, and the Sabians - all who believe in God and the Last Day and do righteous deeds - shall have their reward with their Sustainer..." The above verse provides the definition of a "Muslim". Thus, this word is not restricted or confined only to the followers of the Qur'an, it has a far wider significance, embracing and enfolding as it does the earlier "Peoples of the Book." Islam, then, may be described as one Religion, incorporating within itself the three monotheistic communities. Chapter 21 ,Verse 92; "....(O you who believe in ME,) this community of yours is one single community, since I am the Sustainer of you all...." The Prophet Muhammad began to recieve revelations from God - through the Angel Gabriel - at the age of 40.The first kind of revelations granted to the Prophet(pbuh) were dreams which invariably came true - these occured about six months before the revelations of the Qu'ran. The Prophet received Messages from God for 23 years. The Prophet(pbuh) was unlettered , ie.,he was unable to read or write. The Qu'ran, therefore,is the only miracle God granted to Muhammad. Chapter 6,Verse 109 of the Qur'an: "Now they swear by God with their most solemn oaths that if a miracle were shown to them, they would indeed believe in this (Divine Writ).Say: "Miracles are in the power of God alone." The concept of "hijab" is greatly misunderstood and misinterpreted, it is a word that describes the head-scalf worn by Muslim women. It is representative of the modest, measured, and moderate attire and demeaner which is a necessary requirement of believers. Jewish and Christian women in many traditional or orthodox communities also cover their hair. Chapter24 ,Verses 30 and 31 clearly state the manner in which BOTH believing men and women are required to conduct themselves. Verse 30: "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and to be mindful of their chastity: this will be more conducive to their purity..." Verse 31: "And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and to be mindful of their chastity, and not to display their charms in (in public),beyond what may (decently) be apparent....let them draw their head-coverings over their bosoms.." The most precious covering - or garment - is that of "Libaas-at-Taqwa".This means "garment of God-consciousness".Those who are conscious of God - be they Jews,Christians or Muslims - are always close to each other in their hearts. As ambassadors and envoys of God, belonging to the three communities representing the Abrahamic Religion and Faith, I hope we may strive harder to attain unity of community. And, as Children of Adam, I pray therefore that together we can all strive to attain peace through dialogue and discussion, acknowledging our common heritage and humanity. Qur'an, Chapter 49, Verse 13: "O men! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female, and have made you into nations and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of God is the one who is most deeply conscious of Him. Behold, God is All-Knowing, All-Aware." |

I formally started writing adventure/exploration stories on the Internet at 10 lol - and by the time I was 13, I was doing beta-reading for a lot of other amateurish writers as well. Twice I've received official commendations from the Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition and well, I aspired to be a writer at a time - but now I am fully focused on law
![]() In recent one/two years, I've been having the same dilemma as yours Maula jutt. There is too much going on in my mind in terms of visuals, texts and even feelings - I always try to focus on one thing at a time, formulate just the right words to say it but there is so much going on and I want each and everything to be perfect - it really DOES hinder the creative process, and not only that - it also serves as a de-motivator when we think and plan so hard but produce practically nothing. Here is what got me through this - 1) Relax. Calm down, deep breaths, relaxed nerves. Have a glass of water nearby and just compose yourself for a bit. 2) Outline - or topic, whatever you want it to be. Be absolutely SURE of what you want to write. E.g: if you're writing a horror story, the focus should be on the type of plot, the degree of mystery or gore it should contain. Work meticulously on perfecting the plot - I've felt even in my O level assignments, it helped if I could just write down the plot of the essay before starting writing.. It helps if you think of what you want the reader to be reading. 3) Pause. Reflect. Feel the protagonist/antagonist/emotion/mood whatever your essay is mirroring. Sometimes the perfect beginning would hit me out of the blue like a tonne of bricks when I'd just allow myself to slip into the mood of the essay. 4) Don't stop. When you're in the writing mode, do not stop. Looking at the outline helps in making sure you do not deviate from the topic (esp. if you have to abide by a certain word limit). But at this time, you need to let the creative juices flow and simply write - if the sentence is right, word usage is appropriate, message across is what you imagined etc comes later. 5) When you're done - take a break. When giving an exam, just pause, drink some water - attempt any other question if any - be sure to come back and EDIT. When writing a novel/long essay (i.e. don't have to adhere to any time rules) then close the topic for 1-2 days. Lightly think about the changes you want to make, but do not take out the paper and start with the chopping-changing before this "break" period is over. Last - EDIT. Pretty much doing whatever you planned, or more in point 5. I've felt that after a break, you can approach your work more openly with new ideas or thoughts or phrases. Personally, this is my fav. stage - its where my perfectionism sets in and I do not let go of the writing until and unless I feel it cannot be any better. By the way, I've always enjoyed writing about feelings and emotions - my best works I personally feel are those based on feelings and expressed as metaphors. Maybe its a girl thing, but maybe because feelings are such that no 2 people can experience the same degree of an emotion so the diversity of it makes it stronger? But thats just my perception of it Hope all my rambling helps

Nice credentials there, blinding lights. I dont know how you can ditch something so much fun as creative writing and go for boring law! ![]() You've got some very useful guidelines there. Number 5 seems especially handy. Yes, I find having an outline useful too in keeping me on track. It's good that you have the self discipline to hold back your perfectionism while you go through the initial steps. That's where my impatience creates a problem. I definitely need to work on it. Thanks a lot again for your help. Very, very helpful!

I love the subject so far, love the cases, love the importance of it - besides, nobody in my family is a lawyer so I want to be one and set a precedent (Contract law please, not "wukla-gardi" ) I think patience and discipline comes with writing a lot as well. You develop the confidence in your abilities and thus are able to tackle the frustration. Practice, practice, practice! By reading some of your posts, I can tell you enjoy writing and can really, really excel in it - I would love to read some of the stuff you wrote

But more power to anyone who finds it interesting. We need good lawyers. Yup, patience does come with experience. I think I'm much better than when I first started writing, which was a long time ago. But I'm still just not there yet. I will definitely share some of it with you once I actually complete it! You come across as a good writer too from your posts. What kind of stuff have you written? As in short stories, or longer versions (novels, long essays, etc)?

I love writing. Have done so since childhood. Had several poems published and am currently working on my first novel.
However I am eclipsed by Easa. Anyone who has had the joy of reading his writing will know how masterful he is at weaving a rich tapestry that tells a story of depth and is intellectually stimulating. |

Oh my goodness I LOVE writing, since I was a kid. I also enjoy writing adventure-type swashbuckling tales with treacherous villains and dashing yet nonchalant heroes. I wrote a200-page novel when I was a kid, but lost it when our computer crashed in 2004.
Anyway I don't write fiction anymore, mainly stick to cricket-related articles, but this thread awakened plenty of memories

Well I suppose I lost a bit of desire, partly due to cricket...till about the age of 13 I spent 90 percent of my daylight hours reading & writing. In 2004 I really got into cricket and since then I somehow never find the time...I sometimes sit down for a quick type but rarely complete more than a chapter. Also my personal feeling is that there are a few writers in fiction who really should not be published--Dan Brown for instance, whose writing is, and I know this sounds old-fashioned but it's true, downright blasphemous on occasion which is a shame because adventure stories have plenty of potential without all that pathetic paganistic masala. Then there's Paolini and the girl who wrote Swordbird, both pathetic writers. Anyway InshaAllah I might start writing again soon, but it's taken a backseat to work/cricket at the moment. Btw you're one of my favourite posters. Could you maybe put up a sample of your writing, I'm just curious. Last edited by 1137moiz; 6th October 2010 at 17:09. |

I strongly associate confidence with writing. You can be sure that if you feel whatever you write would be nothing short of brilliant, then there's a very high likelihood that whatever you actually write would be good too! I've been un-confident in my writing abilities, especially since the past 1 year, and I was really worried because my O levels were fast approaching and I felt I had forgotten to write. It took an hour's worth one-on-one lecture from a very senior teacher at my school to sort my head out - and God bless her, my highest score was in English Language in my O levels.. So its good that you've faith in your abilities, I'm sure it'll help you a lot ![]() Thanks bro =) I started with some Tomb Raider-inspired stuff TR was the love of my life before cricket replaced it.. I've written 2-3 proper 15-or so chapter stories regarding it and other adventurous stories. I started with fanfiction, but then I've moved along. Next, I went into just short stories - upto 2-3 thousand words which were usually based on dreams, feelings, some scene on a film that I could not get out of my head.. I just write to release myself, having been a tomboy for most part of my life, its better to sit and write something rather than cry your eyes out like a sissy (OK the sissy bit is debatable)... Thats about it lol ![]() What about you?

![]() I know it sounds really cheesy and sappy, but all my life, I've aspired to have a certain talent that I'd be simply brilliant at. I've muddled with everything, from singing to debating to writing - yet I don't think I've felt my calling in either of those. And just months back, I almost became depressed because I felt like a waste of human space - where my friends got straight 9/10 As in their O levels, I just had (what I felt was a meagre) 7 A*, 2 Bs and I felt really dejected and frankly worthless. Then I realised that M.Ali Jinnah once aspired to be an actor, and if we're to believe Rutti Jinnah, he was amazing at performing some Shakespeare lines.. Yet he set that aside to become possibly the best lawyer in his time, and that was just a stepping stone to his great achievements later on.. So thats another reason why I'm interested in doing something in law. I come from a really privileged family, and I do not know first-hand of the hardships the poorer of the population goes through - its via this profession I feel I could make a difference. Its my duty to Pakistan.. I feel at least I should be given the license to aspire and think of making a change in such times? Do you people agree with that?

Creative writing does not only include fiction/fantasy novels.
Dissertation or thesis equally requires a person to be creative in order to make the paper eligible for publication(s). I enjoy writing journal papers and conference papers. The only difference is that you have to base your investigation on real engineering principles rather than what your heart/brain says, but that's really the beauty of it. At Blinding_Light: Congrats on your results Masha'allah. |

And our school has a history of setting weird precedents. Our principal was UPSET at our 50% 6A+ results because we didn't get enough "world distinctions" this year. Last year (May/June 2009), a girl from my school got FOUR world-over distinctions! She's the head-girl now. I come from a very nerdy world, so its all relative. Ignore me ![]() Quote:

Depressed over 7 A's??
I got three A's and danced all the way home. Not only that, I made all these incredulous demands from my parents in return of getting those 3 A's, half of which I was actually granted!

True, it doesn't include only those. But those are the ones I am really interested in. What's weird is that I find it easier to write a thesis or dissertation because of that exact reason - you can't change facts. Fantasy requires you to invent 'facts', which is fun, but very hard.

I was at the MM Alam Road branch for a year in 4th grade. Then to the Main Boulevard branch near Kalma Chowk till O Levels and then Johar Town after that.Though things were pretty laid back when I was there. Your result in my years there would've put your name on the honor roll. Who's the principal at your school?

I didn't even know you were a girl! ![]() I started my pre-schooling with Choueifat, then shifted to LGS in grade 1 (the year 1999). Been there ever since ![]() They shifted the senior branch over to a bigger campus behind M.M.Alam road.. Why did you shift over to 55-main (is that it?) and JT? :S LOL. My sister 4 years back got 9 As and a 100% scholarship. She and only 13 other girls managed that feat. And the 6A+ figure in 2006 was about 28 or so. Now it has literally doubled over! Although I did get a 75% scholarship for my A levels ![]() Mrs Nighat Ali

But yeah, standards sure have changed. In my O Levels class only 3 people got 6 As. And people only took 8 subjects back then.
