Pushing Past the Limit on Tackling

Everyone knows that football is a contact sport and there is nothing wrong with making good tackles and letting your opponent let you know that you are there as a player. However, over last few weeks some players seem to be pushing it past that limit - Lee Catermole, Nigel De jong and Carl Henry to name a few.

Some players have ended up with some serious injuries and i think its really about time that FA and other footballing boards put a clear message that some of these over-board tackles will not be tolerated!

Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong has been dropped from the Netherlands squad for the upcoming matches against Moldova and Sweden.

De Jong was involved in a tackle which which left Hatem Ben Arfa with a double leg-break during City's 2-1 Premier League win over Newcastle on Sunday.

Netherlands coach Bert Van Marwijk told the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper: "It was a wild and unnecessary offence.

"I have a problem with the way Nigel needlessly looks to push the limit."

It is not the first time the 25-year-old De Jong has been in the spotlight for aggressive tackles.

Bolton's United States midfielder Stuart Holden suffered a fractured right fibula on international duty in March after a challenge from De Jong.

606: DEBATE
Surely the Premier League has to investigate this incident

Then in the World Cup final in July he was fortunate to receive only a yellow card after planting his studs into the chest of Spain's Xabi Alonso.

Van Marwijk revealed his decision to drop De Jong on the Dutch FA website, saying: "I just informed the squad and told him I saw no other possibility.

"In the near future I will discuss this matter with Nigel but right now we have to focus on the upcoming two matches."

Those 3 players highlighted are the worst offenders, especially Karl Henry who I mentioned on this forum a while back

Karl Henry goes in with the intent of hurting players, it is quite clear considering the amount of horrible tackles he has already put in this season - the situation wasnt helped when on MOTD against us, Wolves clearly targeted Barton with over the top tackles and the so called pundits laughed it off

I can understand people that say it is a contact sport and people should be be allowed to make committed challenges - that is all well and good BUT there are thugs out there on the pitch who look to hurt opponents. They play like Sunday league players, I could easily find players throughout Newcastle who can make just as hard challenges as those guys, they are rubbish footballers BUT they can make "committed" challenges

I think the FA/Fifa need to do more to protect footballers - dangerous tackles should receive extra punishment, for example that Karl Henry "tackle" needs a lot more than a 3 match ban - Gomez is so lucky that his leg was not planted otherwise it would have been smashed to smithereen

De Jong has been dropped by Holland and I hope City will do the same.

They have a much better DM in Yaya Toure ... one who can get the job done without resorting to thuggery.

Not to blow my own horn, but one player who does it right is Fletcher. Sure, he is a hard man and roughs you up a bit but don't think he has ever had the intention with injuring someone.

The funny thing about De Jong is that of all people, Van Bommel has come to his defence and said he shouldn't change his game. Of course Van Bommel thinks that! He is the dirtiest midfielder in the game and one wonders how he escapes so many yellows?

Newcastle calling for De Jong to be banned for 6 months!

I guess Wenger was right all along about over the top tackles!

I guess we are emotional about this incident at the moment and I am still angry about the incident

I think it is made worse because it happened to Ben Arfa, I can almost guarantee that if Nolan was the victim we would not have been as angry about it as he isnt that vital to our hopes of staying up. This was supposed to be the start of a wonderful relationship between Ben Arfa and the club and it has been taken away (let's hope not forever)

I think the FA should at least be prepared to punish players after the match using video replays - the current system whereby if the ref has seen the incident they can't do nothing about it is absurd

Also the punishments should be increased, for example that Karl Henry tackle deserves a lot more than a 3 match ban

I will defend the shawcross tackle as I still don't think it was a malicious tackle - mistimed and a poor tackle yes BUT I would not regard it as dirty

Diaby? Is that the one against the mackems? If so I criticised that tackle at the time

The only one I got wrong was the Taylor tackle - I defended it at the time BUT having see it since it is bad

Also another issue is that De Jong has a history of thuggish tackles - shawcross and Taylor didnt/don't and at least they were repentant over what happened BUT we havnt heard a peep from De Jong

Danny Murphy has come out and blamed mick mccarthy, Fat Sam and Tony pullis for send out their respective teams with thuggish tactics.

I guess more people are taking the stance Arsenal were putting across for a while!
