Oct 29th - can MIG do it?

Yes friends, its the annual Marathon Relay in my neck of the woods.

42km in total but each of us runs approx 3km.

This year I have 2.88km to cover but the catch is that is the day time and temps will be around 30-35C and humidity in 70s if not more!

Have been training hard for this but old age is probably gonna take its toll!

Pray for me pls

Btw, my son is also running in the same race for his school and he WILL embarass me in terms of times!

Should be a walk in the park MIG, even with a little bit of training.

What is your background?

Good luck.

70kg, 5'9", 45+, train almost every day but the heat is my enemy !

I think also need to shed another 2 kg to make myself lighter!

I seem to do be doing well until the half way point when I start to slow down - I can sprint right at the end but usually too late!

Inshallah, will do my best

Come on MIG. 3K should be a piece of cake.

If you don't finish under 15 minutes I'll be very disappointed.

15 minutes? I cannot bring it down below 21minutes

Is it wise to drink during the race?

Yes .. your body cools by having water evaporate from the skin ... so you got to replace that water (and associated salts) .. I'd recommend a few cups of Gatorade half way into your run.

This is okay if you're running on a treadmill but I would highly advise against the practice of listening to music while running outdoors. For your own safety you need to be aware of your surroundings, especially if you're around cars/people. Which means open eyes and open ears. Especially if you're a woman.

MIG you definately need water. Drink all the way along BEFORE you get thirsty.
If you get thirsty its too late ,your body has already told you water is low, especially in that heat.
Run the first on and a half Km slow then pick up the speed in the second half. Its called reverse split, second half is usually faster than the first. Your target time should be 17 - 18 minutes considering age weather. The crowd will carry you through. Good luck, The CT need you fit and well for the matches

Many thanks for the wonderful advice - will put it into practice - not long to go now but am running outdoors after fajar to get myself used to the heat - problem is that my leg of the race is around 1:30pm - hoping that local weather will cool down by then

Well definitely not if you're jogging in an area with traffic... But I jog regularly in a park outdoors and nothing has happened to me ..... yet

^MIG MrPakistan786's advice is sound. Also remember to stop running and walk slowly when you're drinking water. 1) It's good for your muscles to rest for a few seconds and 2) you don't want to send water down your nose!

The heat is what will make this tricky but otherwise at that pace and distance hydration really shouldn't be an issue for you, as long as you take fluids before the race.

And Inshallah nothing ever will happen to you. Just that people - especially women, who unfortunately the reality is are more vulnerable - need to take precautions.

In a sad but silly incident earlier this year a guy was running along the beach in South Carolina and was killed because a small plane that was making an emergency landing landed on him. The guy was listening to his iPod and never heard anything.

Yep have music to run but after a while, it doesnt matter

What does help is the presence of some wild dogs in the area I run in - now THAT makes you run

MIG . When you start running, after about 3 minutes you will "hit a mini wall", at this time your chest will start hurting , keep running through this and it will automatically ease up then it will be normal .

Aww may Allah bless you fr your concern, fellow Grammarian

Okay now that guy was just plumb stupid. I don't think no matter how good quality airphones you have, you can block out the sound of a freaking AIRPLANE landing near you... Poor guy tho....

I actually know someone who witnessed a lady getting knocked down by a bus and went under it. She died instantly.

She was listening to an ipod and crossing the road looking at the opposite direction, never heard the bus which was actually going fairly slowly. The impact with the bus killed her!

She was only in her 30s

question for the experts - is it wise to take one of these energy drinks like "red bull" before running ? I understand that they raise your heart rate and can be dangerous but some people have suggested this

Not an expert but as far my research goes I would say drink Powerrade or Gatorade. They do increase your heart rate as well but to less extent compare to Red Bull. So I would say they are more safer than Red Bull which increases the heart rate a lot more compare to Gatorade and Powerade.

Hmm MIG some runners like to take some sort of caffeine before racing, like a cup of coffee, maybe even an energy drink. But you're right in that it increases your heart rate, which will already be increased because of the running, so you might want to be a little careful.

If you're worried about not having enough energy, just have a banana around 30-60 minutes beforehand and you should be all set.

Don,t drink Red Bull so would,nt know but if you drink a sports drink before , during and especially after the race it will benefit you much more than water or squash. Sports drinks like Lucozade sport have electrolytes in them ,these stimulate the muscles and helps them recover from exercise much quicker(something to do with salts I think) It certainly used to work for me during my races.

Also as d0gers suggested a banana is a very good source of " Quick" energy, the potasium in the banana is good for you or you can also eat a fresh Orange but banana is better

The humidity would be the killer until you got used to it in Singapore. You sweat at times just sitting down.

MIG Bhai, I am not sure if you have tried this but usually you see these small energy bottle which says "6 Hours Energy" "8 Hours.... etc. I have not tried it either nor I plan to drink one in my life but my friends used to drink before a cricket match and they would say its effective.

Anyone have tried this?
Trick is pasta the night before and plenty of water, then on the day sip small amounts of water from when you wake till the event. You dont need anything much for 3km's and you dont need energy drinks etc just water before so you are hydrated, but 3km's is not going to do much to ones hydration levels, just have to pace yourself to stop lactic acid build up.

I have never drank any sort of energy drink in my life but seeing people who run, play etc they are drinking enery drinks like water. So I always thought it must be effective (but still didn't drink it).

MIG - I am very unfit these days but yeah humidity is a killer. I took part in a race / challenge at work unwittingly as I didn't realise it would involve so much physical exercise. Anyway I started to cramp up after the swimmming - I think the rapid cool down was a factor, and couldn't walk for a few days afterwards. Seriously embarrassing.

Yep - pasta overload at the moment - have it night before I run next morning - the water aspect during the run is not worrying as the distance isnt that great but the overheating aspect (ie start to feel very hot) is - but grin and bear it!

Finished a few hours ago

Very very hot - about +36C when i ran - a lot of people just walked it but alhmodolillah I ran all the way - finished in about 18-19 mins - sprinted at the end and overtook six people !

The age excuse can only take you so far but I guess my greatest satisfaction was to watch my 2 sons run in the same run ( and beat me by miles !)
