Salman Butt Hopeful of good news [Merged]

LAHORE: Speaking for the first time since being provisionally suspended, Pakistan opening batsman Salman Butt has said he will be more clear on his future after a decision is made by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Salman, who was suspended by the ICC after the News of the World alleged that the then Pakistan captain had a role in spot-fixing during the last Test against England, has appealed and is set to contest his case before the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit on October 30 in Doha.

“I was relishing the peak of my career,” Salman told The Express Tribune.

“In the last five years, Pakistan had never won two Tests on one tour. Beating Australia after 15 years was like a new beginning for all of us but unfortunately we had to cope with hurdles straightaway.”

Salman was appointed Test captain after Shahid Afridi stepped down and announced his retirement from the format after the first match-loss against Australia.

The opener tasted victory straightaway as Pakistan drew the two-match series against Australia before losing 3-1 against England. It was the last match against England where three Pakistan players were alleged to have been involved in spot-fixing by the British tabloid.

“I hope these hurdles are crossed as soon as possible. I think after passing through so much difficulty in your career, your exposure helps you become wiser. You start to understand your surroundings better and especially who is more sincere with you. This is a hurdle which is a learning process of life.”

The left-hander also said his form and fitness were not a concern since he was practising regularly and hopeful of playing for Pakistan soon.

“You know what the concerns are [stopping me from playing cricket] otherwise there is no issue of my performance or anything else,” said Salman.

“I am just waiting for the decision and the reason I am practising hard and keeping my fitness, is to be available for Pakistan selection,” said Salman as he eyed the Test series against South Africa in UAE that starts next month.

Pakistan play South Africa in the first of two Twenty20s on October 26 before taking on the Proteas in a five-match One-Day International series and two Tests.

Salman, not selected for the series due the suspension, however remained confident of playing the Tests that start on November 12.

“I’m hoping for some good news after the hearing in Doha. I’m training according to the conditions in Dubai. South Africa have a couple of really tall bowlers in their team but I’m trying to practise in UAE-like conditions so that it’s easy for me to get used to them and do well there.”

He is rightly hopeful to be selected because he knew as long as Zardari is the President and Butt is the chair, cheat and corrupt people will be rewarded in Pakistan such as appointing them as Governers, PCB chair, Federal Minsters, Team captain; while honest and loyal people like Younis Khan, Makhdoom AF, Dr. Safdar will be left high and dry.

Yeah. you can just imagine the sort of people that have been giving him advices.

you have to say X to get away with it. You have to say Y as to why you did it etc etc. Z did it and said this and got away with etc etc etc.

If any one of them had an ounce of decency. They would admit it and ask for forgiveness and do something to pay people back.

I for one would consider forgiving them IF they were ABSOLUTELY SINCERE in asking for forgiveness and actively working to get rid of this cancer that is affecting the sport.

Well they say never give up on your dreams but I'm afriad Geoff Boycott's grandma has more chance of competing in that series than Salman Butt. BUT we should make clear what our thoughts are IF they were guilty.

FIXING is a cancer. Needs to be dealt with. People anywhere NEAR fixing should be made aware of what we think about FIXING.

I agree. my own view is that people more powerful than the players are involved (at least turning a blind eye) in the fixing show. people who can affect who plays or doesn't play in the team. guess we'll never know though.

Lol the amount of people who have suggested they would offer forgiveness if they admitted it...I see that worked so well for Rana Naved...no-one would forgive him if he admitted this and its amusing how many people claim they would...

And again some are saying he shouldnt be giving interview but at the same time are suggesting that his silence is further proof of his guilt...

Make up your minds...you cant have it both ways...

Fact is if he got away with it and starts to hit some form then the majority on here would forget his misdemeanours as they have with others that have gotten away with it such as in the Qayyum report...

In India, judges even at the fast track courts take 6-7 weeks or more to give their judgement after the hearing.

Even I went through the typical Pakistani reaction and wanted these guys to have the Sialkot-esque treatment. But we have to realise that we're no one to declare anyone innocent or guilty. As dodgy as this interview makes him sound, there are some things going for him in this whole case - e.g., the blatant photoshopped pic where he was wearing that velvet blazer, standing next to the "fixer" and the "reporter"......

I just want justice to be served, and I want the players to come out of it clean if they are innocent. If not - forget seeing them in Pak colours, I want their records to be wiped out, whether its Aamer, Asif or butt.

I agree with the above part of your post - at a time when PCB is issuing show-cause notices to every Tom, Dick and Harry, I think its best these players shut their mouths and stay put - the one thing they do NOT want to lose is the backing of the PCB.

I agree mate- this thing needs to be stamped out and stamped out hard, but at the same time these are cricketers who I want to watch. If guilty they have to be dealt with however..

That was my thought as well. Either say nothing or at least plead your innocence. I don't know if he's just being careful with words because he doesn't want anything taken out of context but it leaves a bad impression. As a Pakistan fan I would find it difficult to trust him as it stands now, and that's coming from someone who rates him higher than most here. He's no wonder batsman but as far as Pakistani openers go he's still the best out there, and I thought he represented us well as Captain as well before all this came to light.

45+??? you must be living in some dream land. this years his average was some 30+ and that's also because he played decent in aus. He has always played better against australia. If you remove bangladesh and australia his overalll pathetic average become more pathetic 25.

I just heard on radio - BBC Urdu - those guys actually called up Salman to ask him about everything. The call was very brief, hardly a minute - but this is what I remember most of :

"We're being treated like terrorists when in fact these are just allegations, which we are contesting fully... Inshallah we are innocent of such charges, and we will serving the national team soon enough...."

@ deadly man - I said I "heard" sth like that. I didn't really follow cricket as religiously as I usually do early on in 2010, but he's been one of our highest run scorer this year. Performing against Aussies is sth that cannot be just "taken" out like that. Aus. is one of the best teams in the world, if not the best - and he was easily our highest run scorer in the T20 WC.

Salman Butt, the former Pakistan captain who's been provisionally suspended by the ICC for his alleged involvement in the spot-fixing controversy, is continuing with an active training regime and hopes to return to the national side for the series against South Africa in the UAE.

Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir - the three suspended players - have lodged appeals against the ICC's suspension and the hearings will take place in Qatar on October 30 and 31.

"My cricket career was going well and I was also doing well, these allegations have damaged by career," Butt said. "I hope these hurdles are crossed as soon as possible. I think after passing through so much difficulty in your career, your exposure helps you become wiser.

"You start to understand your surroundings better and especially who is more sincere with you. This is a hurdle which is a learning process of life."

Butt said he has continued to follow his daily two-hour training and practice routine so he can be ready for a comeback. "I am working hard and doing my bit. The conditions in Lahore and the UAE are the same so I am preparing hard on playing spin."

Following the allegations, made during the fourth Test at Lord's, the trio were withdrawn from the Pakistan squad for the subsequent ODI series and they returned to Pakistan before being suspended. Pakistan play South Africa in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in a full series, starting this month, comprising two Twenty20s, five ODIs and two Tests.

None of the trio have been named in the limited overs or Test squads for the series.

Quite frankly, I was impressed by his demeanor on and off the field after he was named the captain for Pakistan. It was a shock that as one of the better educated people in the side, he led his players astray. It was disillusioning as well. The fact that Wahab Riaz was with him when the money changed hands was shocking as well.

I don't know if the criminal charges will be proven or not, its hard to consider the evidence from a strictly judicial perspective but from a cricketing perspective, the evidence DOES add up. Whether or not they are proven guilty, in my mind, I do believe there was something amiss there. Even if Majeed was aiming to set Salman and the other two up, they seem to have fallen for the bait and thats extremely upsetting.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I don't mind Salman's ban. He was good but nothing better than that. He would have been a good captain but if this is his character than we are better off without him. Asif was very special as a bowler but he has already proved that he can't be trusted with all the drug issues. Its Amir that I am going to miss if he was indeed involved. I am hoping against hope that he wasn't but considering the general moral standards of the society, considering the moral standards within the PCB and the cricket team, I am half sure the kid got into rotten stuff before (if ever) anyone with a good character could help him out.

Having said that, I don't want to preach here but if you go through the Quran it tells you time and again that no one can mislead the other UNLESS they make the wrong decisions themselves so yah, even if he was mislead, he would have made his own mistakes. Its such a shame.

Sad, I know. But you do realise he was the only half-way decent opener we had had these past 3-4 years. And speaking of cricketing skills, he's been your best run-scorer this year - why else do you not want him in the team (taking out this whole fixing saga - just based on cricketing skills). Do you have a good opener in mind who can perform in outside conditions against possibly the best team in the world?

How can an average of 25 be decent? Even bowlers now a days have better average than this.
If you dont have better opener then try someone elsse. keep trying untill u find. no need to compromise on a crap batsman just because u think others are same.

Tell me why was Fawad not given more chances even though he has scroe more than Butt or any other opener?

They could try Asim Kamal or I am very sure even Abdul Razzak will have better average than butt if he opens the inng(kidding)

Besides wouldnt such a statement help his cause. Unless he knows like everyone else that he is guilty, and the evidence is compelling enough( perhaps not to prosecute, but still to prove his guilt)
