Company offers free beer to all Aussies if Australia win The Ashes

Quote:
If Australia defeats England in the upcoming edition of the nation's 128-year cricket rivalry, every adult in the land down under will receive a free beer.

The national team's beer sponsor, Carlton and United breweries, made the announcement on Tuesday at an event attended by team captain Ricky Ponting. If Australia wins the two-month series, the company will print vouchers in five Australian newspapers that can be redeemed for a bottle of beer.

The Ashes dates back to 1882 and is played biennially between the two cricket powers. It consists of five test matches with two innings per match. Whichever team wins, gets "the ashes." In the event of a tie, the team who owns the Ashes at the time retains them. (Much like in the Ryder Cup.)

Why is it called The Ashes? After England lost a home match to Australia in 1882, a British newspaper wrote a mock obituary for English cricket that lamented its death. The piece said the body had been cremated and the ashes sent to Australia. The next time England went to Australia for a test match, sportswriters wrote that the team was going to recover The Ashes.

England currently holds The Ashes, but is a steep underdog for the upcoming series. The team hasn't won a series in Australia since 1986.

That's good news for Australian cricket fans, Australian beer drinkers and, likely, Carlton and United breweries. Though the company stands to lose $20 million if Australia wins The Ashes, the publicity and goodwill engendered by giving out free brews would likely far outweigh the financial cost.

Sounds like a massive promotion.

I am sure the newspapers will sponsor it too as their sales would go up.

They will drink it anyway to overcome the sorrow of losing to England in the Ashes at home.

Imagine Pepsi giving out free soda if Pakistan won a series. Pepsico international would go out of business in 3 days.

I'll be first in line.
Edit - On second thought, I won't be in Pakistan for that.
