Trescothick offered £1m six-hitting incentive

Marcus Trescothick has been offered a £1 million incentive to go for his shots next summer. Trescothick, who is set to sign a sponsorship deal with Mongoose Bats to use their new long handle model next season, will win the prize from the bat makers if he clears the three-tier pavilion at Lord's in any 20- or 40-over match for Somerset.

"Technology is moving on all the time, cricketers are working harder in the gym and twenty20 cricket has enhanced their power," said Trescothick, who hit 84 sixes for England and whose domestic Twenty20 tally stands at 59. "I like Mongoose's innovative approach and attempting to hit the ball over the pavilion will be a challenge, but I have no idea whether I can achieve that until I try out their bats in the middle. I saw Pollard's massive shot at Lord's last summer. It is only a matter of time until someone else does clear the pavilion."

West Indies allrounder Kieron Pollard, who was Somerset's overseas signing in the Friends Provident t20 competition in 2010, came close to clearing the 50-foot high pavilion with a ferocious strike off Shaun Udal in a match against Middlesex in June. The only player known to have cleared the building was Australian Albert Trott. Playing for Middlesex against Australia in July 1899, Trott aimed a violent drive at a Monty Noble seamer to send the ball arcing over the pavilion roof and, some reports say, into the Grove End Road garden of Philip Need, the dressing-room attendant, behind the building.

"It will be a steep premium for us but £1m is a definite incentive for Marcus," said Marcus Codrington of Mongoose. "Obviously we have developed a very radical product but we are not revolutionaries trying to break the walls down."

Honestly, I think it would be pretty much impossible for MT to hit that long. We should not forget that Mongoose did an excellent job in marketing there brand and bats, well done Mongoose

I think you didn't read the article properly. Mongoose were looking to sign Kioren Pollard which didn't go through and SS signed Pollard.

I don't see him doing it.

That's a massive hit. You have to get the height for such a sustained amount of time; a lot of brute force is required. Tresco certainly does not possess that kind of hitting prowess especially towards the end of his career.

The only possibility I see for this is if MT becomes a hulk then I would say its possible otherwise till my death I don't see MT doing it.

But I am still very impressed by Mongoose's marketing. This should have been done by companies who have big hitters such as Afridi, Pollard, Gayle etc.

You wanna clear that pavilion. Have:

Sunil Joshi bowling to Inzamam-ul-Haq

Irfan Pathan bowling to Abdul Razzaq

Harbhajan Singh to Shahid Afridi

(and, er, just for good measure)

Ajit Agarkar to Azhar Mahmood

Venkatesh Prasad to Ijaz Ahmed

Not sure if people here know but it was Marcus Trescothick himself who went to Lords show and tried out Mongoose bats as he was interested in them.

It's a publicity stunt that will focus attention on Mongoose and they will be very unlikely to pay Tresco anyway, so difficult is the task he has been set. It's a good business move.

I have seen Tresco hit some wonderful sixes down the ground, but his favourite area has often been 'cow corner' or through the covers. Beating the Pavilion will be nearly impossible for him, it is a very big boundary and the wind is sure to be a factor.

'Banger' was a top player who played some special knocks for England. Lovely guy too, humble and intelligent. I would rate Strauss higher purely because he has been the more consistent match-winner, but when Tresco got going, anything was possible.

It was all tremendous hand-eye coordination really - his footwork was just plain awful and accounted for the majority of his dismissals, along with holing out. But when he was seeing it well he was unstoppable. 170 in Jo'burg to set up a test series win in SA was probably his best, absolutely brutal knock that was so quick and demoralising that it could only have come from him.

03-05 was probably the best, most exciting and most talented side we've had in living memory. Pretty much everyone in the batting lineup was pure class - Tresco, Strauss, Vaughan, Thorpe, KP, Flintoff - even Bell and Geraint Jones had their moments! and of course the bowling attack was relentless (except for Gareth Batty, Shaun Udal and the Wheely Bin, the spinners basically). Shame it all had to come crashing back down to earth eventually...and it did.

I think we discussed Albert Trott a few months ago and how he cleared it.

Another chance to post this great pic. If Tresco can adapt this technique he wouldn't need a mongoose bat.
