who are the best tailenders?

Now heres an interesting question. Who is the best tailender? There are plenty of decent tailenders out there but who is the best? My top couple are

Vettori
Lee
Gillespie
Vaas
Warne
Boje (not sure if he can be called an allrounder all not)
Shabbir Ahmed
Pathan
Giles

who do you think are the best tailenders?

Gillespie has often proven himself to be a very stubborn tail-ender to dislodge. Warne and Lee outperformed some of their main batsmen in the Ashes series, and could even be classified as all-rounders.

England have a pretty strong tail with Giles at no.8 . Hoggard can be annoying and somehow Harmison manages to play quite a few valuable cameos with his strike-out-at-everything approach.

Mushy Ahmed and Saqlain have been good tail-end batsmen for Pakistan in the past. Currently, the tail looks weak for Pakistan although Sami has shown potential in the past, and Shoaib when he puts his mind to it can knuckle down.

Well u cant class Vettori and Pathan as tailenders!!!
Zaheer Khan and Balaji are handy down the list.
I'll come off with an obscure suggestion - Muralitharan - often can frustrate teams in tests.

Vaas/Boje/Pathan to me are geniune bowling allrounders. Even Warne to an extent.

Gillespie is deffo a good tailender as is Giles. Sami definitely has potential with the bat, as does Shoaib when he (sometimes) uses his brain.

Was tempted to say them but there are plenty of tailenders that can whack it when they are on a good pitch. Harmison, Ntini, Bhajji, Simon Jones, Akhtar, Murali, Robin Peterson.
i cant really put them on though because they are 25% hit and 75% miss

Bhajji is decent with the bat. Simon Jones used to be but his batting has fallen away. IMO he is better than a no. 11 and shud bat ahead of Harmy. Petersen (of SA) was orginally picked in the ODIs as an allrounder and has batted at 3 as a pinch hitter at times.

In a team that usually has 4 tailenders, Daren Powell doesnt look the worst with the willow.

4 sixes in a row against Australia last year at the 2nd ODI at Sydney I have that on video
Six
1 - gets fairly low and hooks it over the midwicket rope
2 - Slog sweep. Makes a great bat sound and clears it by a mile
3- Charges Hogg and hits it just over the mid on rope
4 - Charges him again and hits it over mid off this time

Bill Lawry's commentry on it was class

I cant believe i forgot all about Murali's batting. He is so entertaining to watch because he is so unorthodox. He does have a half century to his credit at Test level.

They had that game in the bag really until Vettori decided to go for a stupid run which meant Harris with a dislocated shoulder had to come in. Such a pity.

I could be flexible and say Mark Richardson who started at 11 or Vinoo Mankad who I think is the only player to have batted at all 11 positions in tests.

Warne, Giles, Gillespie, Vettori, Pathan, Vaas and co. are all very capable of batting and delivering a moderate amount of runs against decent bowling attacks.

I'm in the group that would classify such players as "lower order batsmen" or "bowlers who can bat a bit", rather than "tailenders" - a group for the Muralitharans, McGraths, MacGills and co.

From that lot - I'd give Muralitharan a mention, because he's absolutely bloody hilarious to watch when batting (ditto Harbhajan with some of his wild strokeplay - what is it with these offies?)... best genuine tailend batsman though IMO would be Simon Jones.

Kumble can really hang around and stick it out.

Can you really say Zaheer Khan and Balaji as tailenders? I see them more as specialist batsmen.
