A MAN who drove his taxi up to Manchester to pick up a carrier bag of heroin has been jailed today for seven years.
The National Crime Squad arrested Mohammed Imran Khan (pictured) in his vehicle with the drugs, but his suppliers, Andrew Burke and Darren Edgar, tried to evade capture, one being chased on foot as he jumped over fences and hid in gardens to avoid arrest.
At Manchester’s Crown Square Crown Court, all three were sentenced to a total of 28 years after pleading guilty:
Khan of Whitehall Road, Birmingham was jailed for possession of a class A drug with intent to supply.
Andrew Burke, of Parrswood Road, Didsbury, got nine nine years and Edgar of Ravenoak Avenue, Levenshulme, Manchester got 12 years.
The court heard how in April 2004 Burke, Edgar and Khan all drove to St Hilda’s Road, Northenden, Manchester.
Burke handed Khan a carrier bag.
Khan’s car was stopped in Palatine Road and he was arrested. Edgar and Burke were stopped in nearby Orchard Road East. Both ran off but were caught later.
The carrier bag in Khan’s car was found to contain four blocks – 4kgs - of heroin, wrapped in brown tape, with an estimated street value of £400,000.
A search of Edgar’s home found approximately 100 bullets and a press for making heroin blocks
