Uncivil Mumbai Crowds

The Video is from ESPN

http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cric...btc/index.html

Transcript.

From 4:50 onwards.

Jaideep Verma . Indian Writer & ESPN Contributor

"During the match I was disgusted with a lot of people in the crowd who were abusing the Sri Lankans at the drop of a hat and people were joining in the chorus gleefully, like the match had legitimised their need to give vent to their own Miserable frustrations publicly and project it on others.
We Must not forget that the spectators doing the monkey chants towards Symonds in the infamous 2007 incident ....that Happened in Mumbai .

This is actually one of the most uncouth crowds in India , given it's twin focus on unbridled money and greed and of course the tasteless cultural excesses of *ollywood , this aspect is not a surprise. Unlike what we saw in Dhaka , this is an agressive crowd which indulges in Organized Buffoonery at times Eve-Teasing and drunkenly spewed RACIST comments are par for the course.

It is kind of scary to think what a few sporting successes will do to their already fragile sense of self-esteem probably lead to more agression and a greater sense of entitlement , which is a depressing thought as an Indian ,Grace is rapidly leaving our culture. YOU CAN PERHAPS CHOOSE NOT TO MISS IT THOUGH."

Gokul Chakravarty ESPN Contributor
"I even found a whole bunch of people/kids on two wheelers screaming obscenities at the Sri Lankan Team After the match had been won .
Watching all these people pour out on the streets and display their entitlement laden exuberance makes me feel as if they dont even deserve this team."

Andy Zaltzman ESPN Contributor
"One man scooting past in a crowded car, however, leaned out of the window and shouted at me: “Go home, white man, go home.”"

Again there are some good and bad ones. But in India, bad ones are worse than bad. vice versa.

I was watching the Pak vs Ind match with 150 Indians at my university (vs 50 Pak people).

There was an Indian guy sitting near me and I think he said something to me to which I replied:

"Aaj India 400 bhi banaley toh bhi Pakistan chase karlega". He started spewing personal abuse. I was like...clearly his head is up in the clouds, can't even think about taking a loss.

Tell me about it. I watched it with an equal number of Indians and Pakistanis in the first innings (~50 each) and the second innings with ~100 Indians and ~20 Pakistanis. It was manic, both the lead-up and the day itself.

Someone told me that Shahid Afridi on his arrival back to Pakistan said (I haven't heard this myself) "Un kay dil hamari tarah baday ho hi nahin saktay". If he really said it he really hit the nail on the head. This manifests itself unfailingly in any Indo-Pak issue; it gives me a lot of satisfaction that on repeated evidence we seem to be the better people (which admittedly isn't saying much).

I remember going to Kenya a few years back in part for the ICC Champions Trophy and local Indian fans were chanting "Australia / Pakistan / whoever they played go home." First time I had come across that and found it extremely rude as Kenya is hardly overburdened with touring cricket teams. They should have been celebrating the chance to see top players at close quarters for once.

Can imagine in India it is probably 1.2bn times worse.

well on mumbais defence, there were only 4000 tickets available for common people. But yes, people from mumbai can be rude! I will call them arrogant. They even fight with people from delhi. They need to be more polite.

I'd take mumbaikars over delhiites any day.

I worked in Mumbai for close to 3 yrs and was in NCR for Post-grad. Mumbai people are far more cultured and honest than the delhiites. Just take a Autorick in either city to see the difference. Delhi drivers would take you to cleaners whereas Mumbai drivers are more or less quite honest.

Regarding the rude and arrogant part most of it has to do with the extremely fast pace of life in Mumbai. The real character of Mumbai came out in the July 29 deluge and later in the 26/11 attacks. I was there in the former case and saw people helping others selflessly.

One cannot pronounce an entire city guilty based on its behaviour at a cricket match.

Individuals lose their brains when in a mob. And people lose their brains when inebriated. So, if there are drunk revelers all around, they're bound to create some trouble somewhere.

apologies on calling Mumbaikars rude. Its just the way they talk. And u r right, their fast- paced life makes them harsh. Just like people from Haryana, they might be sweet from inside but talk very harshly!

I'm a Delhite myself and would agree that Delhi's taxi and auto drivers gotta learn a lot from their counterparts in Mumbai. Not just about not overcharging the fares but also in humility.

Delhi's drivers are just scum. Absolutely no question about that.

Actually all teams had a really good time and everything went very smoothly

As for the incidents in the OP, its shameful and deplorable if these happened to even one person. They were our guests. If India has to emerge on the world stage along with economic development, we have to mature as a nation too

Not surprised by Mumbai crowds behaviour...

Most people lead pathetic lives there where that have to encounter pollution, dirt, trash everywhere they walk... All of these could effect their behaviour badly over a period of time..

I agree that Marathis can be very rude...

True story this...

I( a non-marathi) played for a Marathi cricket team..... We were playing against a Telugu team. I could understand Telugu.. One guy from my team was upset about a decision and started sledging the batsman. He called the batsman some real bad words and he thought that the Telugu batsman did not understand the language...

The batsman was huge compared to this Marathi fellow. I for a second thought that this Marathi guy was dead with the way the batsman charged towards him...

Now not all Marathi players from my team are bad.. But the ones from Mumbai are absolute trash. They think that they are the sh.it just because they are from Mumbai...

When ever they go overboard, I used to use one word... DHARAVI(The biggest slum in Asia).. Those guys used to shut up immediately after that

Inferiority complex? LOL

Like I said, I found guys from Mumbai real offensive when it comes to their behaviour... The rest of Marathis were pretty fine...

I am not generalizing all Mumbai people... But I did encounter some real rude ones who use that typical mumbai slang and abuse others from India thinking that they will not understand their language..

Whenever Mumbai people try to act as if they are far more advanced than others, that is the comeback I use for them... Of course, I will never use it freely. Only when I think they are going over board..

You have to first get a hold of Mumbai's demography , its not some village of a state where the population is Pre-dominantly local , its a cosmopolitan and only 23% Population of Mumbai speak Marathi . Gujratis and Bhaiyyas from North India form a major chunk of the city and in the stadium only 4000 seats were provided to the common public and taking into account the huge prices of tickets its highly likely that the Normal Crowd was pre-dominantly Non-Marathi .

And regarding your ignorant comment about " Dharavi" , go and check the people who formed Asia's Largest Slum Dharavi , they were our very won South Indians especially Tamils who were the original Karta Dhartas of Dharavi with Tamil still being the most spoken language in Dharavi .

Again, I never said that Mumbai people are all Marathi.. I understand that it is a mix of everyone from India..But a lot of Mumbai folks tend to be rude thinking that they are the most hapening people from India and mocking others who are not from Mumbai....

When that mockery goes overboard, I had to come up with a counter mock and I reminded them of Dharavi... That cooled off their ego pretty well

Right now if there is any city that is more civilized and still are advanced, I would nominate Bangalore..

its not people from mumbai its india in general. What happened before England v. india at Lords? Pakistanis are generally more fair. When the likes of Flintoff and Pietersen came to Pakistan they were adored. People were actually supporting them as much as they were supporting pakistan.

Mumbaikars proclivity to get things done quickly is misinterpreted by others as rudeness.
Outsiders who come from cities/towns with more laidback style get annoyed by this and label it as rudeness. If you want to experience rudeness then NY is the city for you.

Quote:

Cant imagine why they would feel ashamed of Dharavi. Every major city in the world has its slums. Dharavi actually is quite a productive one as it generates revenues close to $800 million. Also the rents there are higher then what you'd shell out in level B & C towns.

Quote:

I'd have to politely disagree. What yardstick do you use to tag a city civilized?

For me a city's ability to assimilate outsiders is a major factor.
Also a city should be able to evolve to suit the demographical changes. If a, say, Bengali or Punjabi can settle down with minimal changes in his/her lifestyle then I'd take that city over any other.

Being civilized means you make everyone feel comfortable and honestly I didnt feel welcome during my stay in Bangalore. The North-South divide is quite apparent. Moreover there is underlying hostility in the locals against outsiders. They feel that their peaceful and tranquil life has been destroyed by the rapid advance and modernization.
