Is Waqar asking for too much money?

The Pakistan Cricket Board is unlikely to offer former captain Waqar Younis a long term contract as the national team's bowling coach.

PCB sources said that the establishment was only interested in appointing a bowling coach for the Indian tour and not on long term basis.

The final decision in this context is expected on Thursday when the PCB adhoc committee meets at the National Stadium in Karachi.

"The odds are now against Waqar Younis because the PCB wants a bowling coach for the Indian tour only. On the contrary, Waqar Younis has demanded a long term contract and as situation stands at present, the matter will end with the team flying out," sources in the board said.

On Wednesday evening, Younis, who retired from international cricket last year in April, admitted that he had asked for a long term association with the board.

"I have asked for, at least, one-year contract. I have also informed them that I am not available only for the India tour," he said.

The PCB sources said Waqar had demanded "exuberant money" for a one-year contract. The sources refused to reveal further details regarding the financial package the former toe-crusher has demanded.

"Frankly speaking, Waqar's demands are genuine but the top hierarchy is thinking otherwise. If Bob Woolmer can be offered a staggering contract until 2007 World Cup, Waqar Younis deserves the same, if not more," experts said.

The PCB can always be counted on to mess things up! What is wrong with these fools?!

They can only benefit by having Waqar for a year!

Waqar should get the money he is worth. The guy has every right to negotiate how much he wants. Why shouldn't he?? Everyone wants to earn as much as possible. I can't believe the silly PCB people who pay plenty of money to overseas individuals like Chappel, Boyks, B Richards for stints of no more than a month if lucky. Not to forget the large amounts Mr Woolmer (righlty) gets but then why make so much fuss and not accept and pay what a Pak legend is worth?

Asking for renumeration is only Waqar's right, and if the PCB dishes out millions of $$$ each year to the countless foriegn physios who happen to fly out of the country when they are needed it makes them look stupid when they say paying someone like Waqar is " too much" for a one-year contract.

I agree I agree :?d :?d

Waqar should be hired for a year, but with the option that if the PCB wants his services can be used at the academy......

the other side of the coin may be that vicky bhai really doesn't have any coaching experience. it might be a chance for him to put his foot in the door, and then be considered for future tours in a larger capacity.
its a place to start, maybe if the bowlers do well he can renegotiate a contract after the series?

please note i am in no way doubting his capabilities, just might be a better way of getting around this problem.

another thing i want to point out is that PCB is already paying heavy to the national team coach & his duty is to coach bowlers also. paying someone else for the sme duty which you have assigned anyone else with such a huge payment is something which doesn't sounds good. if the coach had been cheaper, this would make some sense. remember, coach is not the only one who recieve his salary from PCB. PCB have other employs to pay & start some development work too.

don't get me wrong, i also want Waqar to be our bowling coach & i had given him a green light with out giving it a 2nd though if our national coach would have been recieving lesser amount as remuneration.

what are waqar's credentials as a bowling coach? what experience does he have? what success has he had in this role?

so there is no justification for him to be asking large sums and talking about long term

In order to use the services of a great bowler like waqar , you need to make a good offer ..if you pay peanuts ..you will only be getting monkeys !!
