Best Role Model from each Test Playing Team.

Here's my Best Cricket Role Models from each team. There are many players from each team that fit this profile but I tried to chose someone who is not only an extraordinary talent but also non controversial and a good person off the field as well and befitting to be an ideal role model for youngsters to follow.

Pakistan - Imran Khan
New Zealand - Richard Hadlee
West Indies - Michael Holding
Sri Lanka - Murali
India - Rahul Dravid
South Africa - Hashim Amla
Australia - Adam Gilchrist
England - Graham Gooch

What's your choice ?

For England, of the current players I would say Andrew Strauss or perhaps Eoin Morgan.

Pakistan from the current players - Saeed Ajmal.

I agree Saj, for Pakistan Umar Gul is another worthy role model I think too.

It depends what you're looking for. I look for how cricketers/sportsmen perform on the field not what they do off it. It's their business not mine.

Ajmal is a great role model. He gives it 100% whether batting or bowling. He also works hard on his weaknesses and comes back better.

Fair point KKWC. I think that a player's discipline and conduct off the field as well makes them more respect and admired not just as a sportsperson but as a decent human being as well.

A good example is Hashim Amla. A class cricketer on the field and off the field as well in terms of how he handles himself.

Surely, Mohammad Asif is a great role model? What about Salman Butt?

IT imo people focus too much on what players do outside of cricket, following them around etc. Sure sometimes what they do off it can increase your respect for a player but usually it doesn't. Cricket is a sort of unique sport where sportsmanship is still regarded very highly although this has been in the decline for a while. For me simple things as walking when you know you've edged it or not over appealing shows the character of a player, honesty is a good trait to look for in a role model.

Amla is a great example, always walks, never raises his voice in anger and as a Muslim for him to refuse wearing adverts concerning alchohol was a great thing to see.

Good Points KKWC. Specifically, the bolded part above is really what makes certain players truly great and stand out from other players.

To me, obnoxious attitude off the field, silly Press conference statements, lose moral values undermines the greatness of a player. A perfect example is Shane Warne. One of all time greats on the field but not sure I want my kids to look up to this guy!

Warne having a sneaky fag on the Lords balcony didn't do his role model image any good. I wouldn't any kids looking up to him off the field but on it he was one hell of a fighter. Australians in general arn't good role models, they do utter a lot of filth on the pitch and end up crying when they are in trouble. English are generally good along with South Africans. Sachin is a great role model and the best imo, no need to mention why.

That rules Gooch out IMO - he led the 1982 rebel tour to Apartheid SA.

What about Mike Brearley? Staunchly anti-apartheid, good family man who has a multi-racial family, no drink or drug scandals, excellent skipper, outstanding intellect, psychotherapist.

Interesting factoid Robert! Mike Brearley certainly an outstanding skipper. What about his batting skills though ? Perhaps not as high quality as his leadership skills ?
