Styris retires from international cricket

Scott Styris, the New Zealand allrounder, has announced his retirement from all international cricket. Styris, who will turn 36 next month, had retired from Tests in 2008, but continued playing one-day and Twenty20 internationals for New Zealand, and was part of their run to the semi-final of the 2011 World Cup.

Styris' retirement comes at a time when New Zealand have just appointed a new captain in Ross Taylor. Styris said he reflected on his future after the World cup and decided it was time for him to step aside as the team began a new era.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed representing my country," Styris said. "It has been an honour and a pleasure to play for New Zealand alongside so many quality players over the years and to have been a part of many key moments during that time."

Scott Styris retires from International cricket.

http://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/cri...-1226081259856

Quote:
Styris, 35, said that following this year's World Cup held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, he had time to reflect on his international future and decided the time was right to step aside as the team begins a new era under coach John Wright and new captain Ross Taylor.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed representing my country in the international cricketing environment,'' Styris said.

"It has been an honour and a pleasure to play for the Black Caps alongside so many quality players over the years and to have been a part of many key moments during that time.''

Styris will continue to play domestic cricket for Northern Districts and in the Indian Premier League with the Chennai Super Kings.

He played his first match for the Black Caps on the 1999 tour of India and his last was in this year's World Cup semi-final against Sri Lanka.

In all Styris played 29 Tests from which he compiled 1586 runs, including five centuries, and a highest score of 170 to finish with an average of 36.04.

With the ball, he claimed 20 wickets at an average of 50.57 with a career best haul of three for 28.

He played 188 one-day internationals and 31 international Twenty20 matches.

Styris is currently playing cricket for Essex in the English County Twenty20 competition.

Was a very lively and handy all rounder, NZ will surely miss him.

As Justcrazy aptly put it, the word that comes to my mind for Styris is he was an honest trier. Not a great talent but made the most of his talent and played a crucial role for NZ in ODIs.

Just remember one of his inning, he scored 130 odd runs against srl in 2003 wc. That was one great inning, lately he was quite inconsistent with v poor fitness. Anyways, wish him all the best fotr future life.

NZ players can do that in any case, they have an informal window for it.

Anyway, he rarely gets picked into the final XI. Nether for Deccan or Chennai now.

He had more potential, I feel he has somewhat underachieved with the bat. His weight issues and a weak/bad back didn't help his cause.

He was a decent player. I used to enjoy watching him, and I suppose I will miss him. Even in NZ history, his all-round abilities were vastly eclipsed by the much more blessed Chris Cairns, and truth be told, he was just a poor man's Cairns/Razzaq/Watson. Still, an honest trier as someone called him in this thread. Always gave it his all, and eventhough he will be a forgotten name in history, I am glad I got the chance to watch him play.

NZ already depleted side has taken a new low by Scotty taking an exit.

Bad news for NZ. Bad timing by Scott. Should have played more considering the side is in total crisis and newcomers arent all that impressive.

^^ Fleming too.

As for newcomers not being that impressive, I like the look of them. All in their early 20s, NZ are looking to go a long way with them:

Kane Williamson
Tim Southee
Martin Guptill
Jesse Ryder

All of them are full of talent. Combine that with the likes of Ross Taylor, Oram, Brendon & Nathan McCullum and you have a pretty formidable side.

Yeah the NZ side of Fleming era. Thats what im talking about.

Ryder, Guptill & Southee are exactly not newcomers. Talent is overrated. Their stats tells a story. Williamson is nothing special his first few glimpses were actualy pretty good but what impressed me is his bowling. He is still nervy and clueless currently. What he needs is more time in first class cricket before exposing him into international cricket.

Ryder might be destructive but is once in a while. Southee inst impressive either im talking about consistency and exactly what talent does he have?

And as for Guptill he doesnt deserve to be in the side. His cheap shots and the amount of cheap shots he played are more than enough to justlify his place out of the side.

If by that you mean a good sportsman in his field, yet vastly overrated and who got screwed by his boss in the end... no.

The equivalent of that title can only be taken by one Sahabzada Shahid Khan Afridi.
