England best-ever ODI XI

Looking at the stats there are not many standout players, but I'll have:

Tresco
Knight
Hick
KP
Lamb
Flintoff
Stewart (c, w)
Botham
Swann
Gough
Anderson

Both was unrelaible batting in ODIs so he is well down the order. Hick is a reliable batter, excellent catcher and a good second spin option. Draco might make it in instead of Jiimmy due to his excellent s/r.

Open with Tresco and Stewart and put in another bowler, bowling all rounder... Botham at 7 is perfectly fine for batting.

I loved graham gooch and robin smith and hick.... Alas two of them weren't in OP's team. Not good enough stats wise?

Honestly the current England team bar Broad on paper looks beast. They just don't know how to apply themselves in limited overs.

They seriously need a 50-over limited over competition. The reason I think they never know how to pace their innings while batting or bowl with some tactics during end overs.

interesting the middle order are all from Southern Africa. Batting looks brittle. I'd move Stewart up to open as he wouldn't do well at 6, drop Knight (albeit he's a fine ODI player) and have Fairbrother at 6.

Suddenly the batting seems stronger:

Tresco
Stewart
Hick
KP
Lamb
Fairbrother
Flintoff
Botham
Gough
Swann
Anderson

Other options are Gooch and Willis.

I agree but I'd include Colly, Morgan and Thorpey in there somewhere!

Flintoff in for Bell, probably Trescothick in there somewhere.

Can't put in players that I never saw.

This team as mentioned above is seriously boss, just needs to be more consistent.

nearly 22 and started watching in '99.

Never really been a fan of the overhyped Gough, he had his moments but England have had better bowlers since.

trescothick and gooch are automatic picks. best openors in english limited overs history. stewart is automatic choice, no better keeper-batsmen in englands history. then darren gough is the best bowler in limited overs cricket for england. flintoff and botham are also automatic selections.
only swann, kp and anderson have a real claim to making the team. the rest are unproven and pretty poor in the limited overs format.

90's were perhaps the best decade of cricket ever, you missed some classics but luckily for you England are at their best right now. Did you go to watch the 99 world cup by any chance? I was there for the semis, still remember that match even though I was a kid back then.

gough was a serious bowler, more a pakistani type bowler then traditional english hit the deck bowlers. i think you may have missed his best performances. his comeback at the end of his career was pretty poor, but throughout the late 90's till the early 2000s he was competing with the best fast bowlers of the world. and that was a golden fast bowling era.
leagues above the current crop.

Cannot have an English ODI side without the mandatory bits and pieces player. So who is it? Luke Wright, Hollioake,Ricky Clarke, mark ealham, ronnie Irani or Ian Austin?

It just wont be England without one of those legends in the team.

Oh, I disagree Mr Whippy! Goughie was just about the best ODI bowler I remember playing for England with the most wickets by far, and a very good test bowler to boot, successful all over the world from the get-go, unlike Jimmy. He was properly quick and was the first Englishman I saw reverse it. He'd walk into the current team.

Gough, Freddie, Botham, Swann to bowl 40 overs. Hick and Trescothick to bowl the 10 between them. What a team! I would've loved Stewart but I remember how Knight destroyed us in 1996.

You could say it's a very deep batting line-up but I couldn't envisage anybody getting them out and the team would get 300 most times these days.

Cough, flintoff, Botham and Swann would be lethal

agreed. gough would be just behind steyn as the best bowlers in the world if he was around now. He is never regarded too highly due to how amazing that era was. guys like gough, srinath, gillespie etc. aren't really talked about much, but if they played today they would be the best around.

Trescothick. ( cleanest striker of the cricket ball in England)

K. Pieterson ( Once he settles he can unsettle most bowlers, has to bat maximum overs)

R. Smith ( another strong striker of the ball, and a man with big heart, strong of fast bowling)

G.Thrope. ( 2nd left hander in the top four...... stabilizer in the middle )

A.Stewart ( WK........ and a gutsy player / opener when required )

G.Hick ( I chose him because he would provide the 6th bowling option, an a good fielder)

I.Botham ( bowler / hard hitting batsman)

A.Flintoff ( In case botham fails....... he will not)

G.Swan ( specialist spinner )

D.Gough ( yorker specialist)

S.Harmison ( can be a little wayward but is devastating on his day )

This team has the depth in batting . 5 specialist bowlers with Hick as the 6 th. Stewart can be the captain.

Goodness, no! He was absolutely crucial in ODIs, working it around in the middle and hitting out at the end. He got us out of more holes than I can remember. Real ODI pressure-player. I only wish we had him, or Fairbrother today.

Hick should be in the team. Swan is on everyone list, others are all seam bowlers . Need to have another spinner. He will be the sixth bowler. Certainly hick is better than others like

daralympane
Ian Blackwell
Ian Embury
Yardy
...................... list goes on......... Ian Salisbury.
