US to suspend AIDS to Pakistan

The US administration will hold back about $800 million in AIDS to the Pakistani military because Washington is unhappy with Pakistan's expulsion of US military trainers and its campaign against militants (Remember, Pakistan Army only targets TTP militants, not Afghan Taliban nor Haqqani ones).

On the other hand, this news confirms that the military trainers who were expelled, were indeed used for HUMINT purposes by the US. Otherwise, expulsion of their military trainers shouldn't cause so much itch to them.

While I understand the sentiment the title is somewhat misleading as is the post...the article uses the word 'could'...they haven't done anything as yet...but agreed on Aid being used as a bargaining chip but hasn't that always been the point of Aid...

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is suspending and, in some cases, canceling hundreds of millions of dollars of aid to the Pakistani military, in a move to chasten Pakistan for expelling American military trainers and to press its army to fight militants more effectively.

Get your facts right. Among the about 9 billion received from 2001 to date, only 1.2 billion was received by the Pakistan Army according to the ISPR release. This too, was used for civilian projects like constructing 200 schools in FATA and many others.

Politicians, yes. Generals - if they did care about AIDS, they wouldn't have expelled the US military trainers which is leading to the stoppage of AIDS (who were in turn, used for HUMINT purposes by the US).

I don't get it. Some of the posters (not all) here complains when usa said it could stop sending aids.

On another hand, the same people complain that usa sends aids cz of their own interest (the silence before the storm.... I read it somewhere here).

Why there is double standards here? If you get it, then be greatful.... Otherwise you shouldn't complain when they are thinking of stopping.

Most of the AIDS goes to the pocket of corrupt politicians.

"Silence before the storm" was mentioned by me in another topic, which is completely irrelevant with the issue of AIDS we're discussing here. I explained it here: http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/sh...d.php?t=132398

So the corrupt military establishment and their lovers in power have been getting aids all this time from the US? While they sodomize the nation and give it nothing in return?

Who's worse off in the end?

I love how you can accept that the politicians are indeed corrupt, but pull shutters over your eyes and refuse to acknowledge that the treacherous and cowardly military is in bed with the very same politicians.

i think its a common problem for all 3rd world countries. The aids gets divided into multiple times before it reaches to the common peoples interest. Its like a pyramid where common people is the last position. Not only politicians, but officers below them, middle man.... All takes their shares of corruption. What is left after that goes to the cause. A very disappointing fact.

all Pakistan needs to do is double the fees for transporting American and NATO goods to Afghanistan. No one can fight without weapons, armour, food, etc.

Or even better the govt should peg all the prices to what is charged by US based defense contractors. the 800m will look very petty then.

Thats actually a good idea but I guess its little late now.

What it seems that US wants to get out of AF asap and it can be a reason for thinking to withdraw aid from Pakistan. They might be feeling that they do not need Pakistan anymore after they are out of Af.

Well just a thought.

Supplies should NOT be affected in any way. Army is helping the Afghan taliban by secretly making it easier for them in raiding these NATO supplies inside Afghanistan. In this way, at present, Afghan taliban's IEDs are regularly blowing off tanks and other logistical vehicles, which is mounting the terrorist invader's costs - both in monetary terms and human terms.

Would you please stop using the words AIDS again and again! Its aid, not aids.

Pak army is never happy when US cuts off military aid. So stop posting nonsense.

But I hope US suspends aid. It will be a blessing in disguise. Last time they did that, and blocked jet sales to pakistan, JF-17 was the result.

So you are saying the generals acted against the politicians wishes because they don't care about aid??

They threw out US military trainers against the wishes of the democratic government?

If yes, then why not shoot down drones against the governments wishes?

Why are they able to act against government wishes in one case and not the other??
