Wasim Akram's Greatest Test Spell | Peter Roebuck

In his piece about test cricket titled, "The Primal Contest", Roebuck points out Akram's performance at the MCG in 1989. It can safely be assumed that Roebuck is claiming this to be Wasim's best test performance as he lists other bowlers within the same article and their best performances.

Do you agree with this notion?

Wasim Akram's virtuoso display at the MCG stands out because he had the ball upon a string, made it bend both ways at a scintillating pace and left accomplished batsmen gasping and groping. It's hard enough countering a bowler sending them down at 90mph and swinging it in one direction. When they start moving it both ways, it's downright unfair. Wasim streamed to the crease and with a gleam more mischievous than menacing, produced an astonishing spell.

I havent seen it but have heard a LOT about that spell and especially that whole series probably Wasim's best ever series with both bat and ball

17 wickets at 18.70 + 197 runs in that series with an average of 39.40

scored a 100 in 2nd game with Imran getting a ton as well when they saved a lost game and made it into a draw, still lost the series 1-0 though

MashaAllah that was one extraordinary summer for Wasim Akram. He was being talked of during that tour as the next top class allrounder of world cricket (the 80s brigade were fading relatively though still effective, for example Imran's bowling was on the wane near age 40). Unfortunately he never quite fulfilled his potential with the blade but his extraordinary ability with the ball made up for that to an extent. Wasim was probably the most talented allround cricketer Pakistan has ever had
