Amir/Asif moral dilemma for me
I mean.
Since the day it happened, I have been weighing it up in my head. On the one hand, you can say, well the no-balls were just a taster. Who knows what games they HAD fixed or were going to fix. Or the fact that no one has gotten caught in a more red-handed fashion with their hands in the cookie jar, and with such irrefutable proof. They would have to have action taken against them even if they had people who sympathized with them. On the other hand, I tell myself. Yes they bowled no-balls but people have done far far worse though. Batsmen have gotten OUT deliberately. What is worse. To bowl a no ball in an inning where you have taken 6-20. Or to be a top order batsman and deliberately get bowled, and effectively do more than 10-15% of what is needed to lose your team the match. I know which is worse in my head, and that there are batsmen who have admitted to throwing their wickets and have gone back to continue their careers. Why were they SO stupid. Having said all this, like everyone else, I feel for Amir more than Asif, because of how evident it is that he was a youngster being coaxed/convinced into something. And what makes it harder is that they were both outstanding bowlers, hence the greater desire to excuse/absolve them. The fact is they HAD to be banned because the evidence was overwhelming. But I can't get the thought out of my head that a BATSMAN throwing his wicket is far more reprehensible. If such an action is taken against Asif and Amir, then what of batsmen who went back to forge stellar careers? They should be stripped of their records retrospectively as well. Fined. Banned. Jailed. Shamed. Herschelle Gibbs? Claims he was given money to score under 20 but "forgot" and scored 74. Does anyone really believe he didn't throw any other games? Boooolsheeet. |

The thread title will be word for word what the Pakistan captain will say, when asked by an English journo at a press conference in four years time, about the inclusion of Asif and Amir in the squad for a forthcoming series.

Need proof to say batters threw their wickets away for money. That's hard to do.

What is also true is that if you go through the list of banned cricketers, a bigger proportion of them are batsmen. It's much easier for batsmen to cost their side a game. A bowler can bowl half volleys and full tosses but too many of these can look suspicious or lead to him being taken off the attack. Hence, they get used for spot fixes - wides and no balls. A batsman just has to miss one and he's on his way to costing his team a match. Easier for a bookie whose relying on the final outcome to make money. However, batsmen can always plausibly deny this, while you can't deny overstepping by a yard. |

Find me evidence of Herschelle Gibbs deliberately underperforming in a cricket match. Only then will you have a point.

There are worse crimes in history, so why, especially AMir is getting all this stick. Look at his situation. No one was killed or injured or it didnt affect the game, so why this HUGE hype that it was the biggest shame ever?
