Four arrested in anti-terror operation in Birmingham

http://www.dawn.com/2011/11/15/briti...ror-probe.html

LONDON: Police said they arrested four men Tuesday in the central English city of Birmingham as part of an ongoing counter-terrorism investigation that has uncovered an alleged suicide bombing plot.

The men, three aged 19 and one 24, were detained under counter-terror laws in the Sparkhill area on suspicion of fundraising for terrorist purposes and of travelling to Pakistan to undertake terrorist training.

“Today’s arrests were pre-planned and not made in response to any immediate threat to public safety. Officers were unarmed,” said a statement from West Midlands Police.

They are the latest arrests in a counter-terror investigation in Britain’s second biggest city which was launched in September.

Police say eight people have so far been charged as part of the probe, with seven remanded in custody after appearing in court in London.

Three men were charged with “planning a bombing campaign” and “stating an intention to be a suicide bomber”.

Other charges the suspects faced included collecting money for terrorism, travelling to Pakistan for training in bomb making and making a “martyrdom”film.

It's best to wait until they are convincted, if they do ever get convicted.

The majority of people arrested are not charged, the majority of those who are charged are never convincted.

Those who are convincted could have been entrapped by the security services.

Those who do actually plan an attack shouldn't do so since they could simply go to Afghanistan and fight the enemy instead of killing innocent people who are mostly against the war of terror.

Yep, the police never lie

Let's wait and see what comes of this case, as KKWC rightly points out there have been numerous arrests over the years only for the cases to disappear without trace

The trial is underway:

Quote:

Three terrorist plotters led a plan to set off eight suicide bombs that could have been bigger than the 7 July London attacks, a court has heard.

Irfan Nasser, 31, Irfan Khalid and Ashik Ali, both 27, are accused of being central figures in the extremist plot, jurors at Woolwich crown court were told, on Monday.

Prosecutor Brian Altman QC said: "The police successfully disrupted a plan to commit an act or acts of terrorism on a scale potentially greater than the London bombings in July 2005 had it been allowed to run its course.

"The defendants were proposing to detonate up to eight rucksack bombs in a suicide attack and/or to detonate bombs on timers in crowded areas in order to cause mass deaths and casualties."

All the men are accused of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts, which they deny. Nasser is accused of five counts of the offence, Khalid, four and Ali, three, all between Christmas Day 2010 and 19 September 2011.

For Nasser, from Sparkhill, Khalid, from Sparkbrook, and Ali, from Balsall Heath; all in Birmingham, this is alleged to have included planning a bombing campaign, collecting money for terrorism and recruiting others for terrorism.

Nasser and Khalid are also accused of travelling to Pakistan for training in terrorism, and it is alleged that Nasser also helped others to travel to the country for the same purpose.

It is alleged that, while in Pakistan, Nasser and Khalid received training in how to use weapons and how to make bombs and poisons, and made suicide videos while they were there. They returned to the UK in July 2011, and it is claimed the group then began trying to make homemade bombs, using a flat in Sparkbrook as their base.

In total, 11 men of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin were arrested over the alleged plot, and one woman.

Altman told the jury that the three defendants were "central figures" in the plan, and that they are "jihadists".

He called the trio "senior members of a homegrown terror cell".

Nasser has a degree in pharmacy and it is alleged that this knowledge helped the plotters to try to make explosives.

Altman said: "It was Nasser's knowledge of chemistry, together with his training as a terrorist in Pakistan, that allowed the defendants to experiment in preparing an explosive mixture with a view to constructing a homemade explosive device."

The group are also accused of making bogus charity collections in Birmingham for Muslim Aid as well as a local Muslim centre. But the two causes received only a fraction of the money they had collected, prosecutors say, while the rest was intended to fund the attack plan.

Altman said they were "despicably stealing money from their own community donated to charity".
