Muharram - Imam Hussain & Karbala

As the Islamic new year fast approaches, Muslims and non-muslims all around the world recall the tragic events of Karbala and strengthen their commitment to following the example of this noblest being.

Allama Iqbal notes that remembrance of Imam Hussain and his salvation are closely correlated.

Roney wâlâ hoon shahid-e-Karbala kay gham may mayn
Kyâ durrey maqsûd na daingay Sâqi-e-Kauthar mujhey

For those who are interested in a more detailed account of the events surround Karbala and the lessons to be learnt should read the following speech by Abdullah Yusuf Ali (the famous translator and commentator on the Holy Quran) that he delivered in London in 1931.

A very interesting film on the events which following the battle of karbala. It shows how the women and children of the Prophet's household ensured that the memory of Imam Hussain will survive for all future times.

why would non-muslims recall Karbala events and follow the example?

Muslims would do well to focus on the present rather than the past.....

because the message of Imam Hussain is universal in its nature. A great number of non-muslims have used the example of Imam Hussain to understand the concepts of faith, sacrifice and the human struggle for success.

But that is not consistent with the approach taken by Allah and His Prophet. The Quran is largely based on historical accounts of the struggles between men/women of God and the forces of evil.

And as a point of logic, our present is defined by our past!

Indeed, Allama Iqbal's concept of selflessness manifests itself in its completeness in Imam Hussain. And it is with this perspective in mind that he notes that the sacrifice of Imam Hussain is the fulfilment Prophets Abrahams commitment to offer a great sacrifice (as noted in the Quran).

Not true. They have their own examples.

The Quran is essential part of the religion whereas events at Karbala are not.

...and religion includes every aspect of life. Quran is a book of guidence and it guides us to be aware of the past such that we can follow the example of those who are successful and those who are not, and certainly Imam Hussain is the leader of the successful.

Indeed, so both your present and the future are shped by your past. So if you want to successful present and future you better understand your past.

Hurr was the person who shot an arrow at Harat imam hussain(AS)'s 6 month old son when he was in imam's hand. Son died. Next day hurr came to imam hussain and asked for forgiveness and requested to gave his life fighting along with imam hussain. He was not only forgiven but was given assurance of jannat by the imam.

You are confusing Hazrat Hurr and Hurmala (who killed Hazrat Ali Asgar).

Huzrat Hurr defected on the eve of the battle. The story of Hazrat Hurr is a perfect example for us all. He as a general in Yazid's army and was responsible for bring Imam Hussain to karbala. When Hazrat Hurr and his solders caught up with Imam Hussain, he and his men was in desprate need for water and Imam Hussain gave them all the water they needed.

One the eve of the battle, Hazrat Hurr looked onto the camp of Imam Hussain he was filled with fear as to how he would face his creator after he had handed the beloved grandson of the Prophet into the hands of death. He decided to join Imam Hussain. He asked his son to tie his hands behind his back and waked to the camp of Imam Hussain. When he saw Imam Hussain he dropped to his knees and begged for his forgiveness.

Imam Hussain accepted him as his a guest but apologies that he had nothing to offer him as refreshment this time round. Hazrat Hurr and his son were killed in the way of Allah the following day.

A time for reflection and sadness at what happened to Islam after the death of our Nabi (saw).
