The March of Misbah Inc. Towards 50 Averages | Track Here

This thread will track the cumulative career batting averages of the current Pakistani players. At least till some "you know which" milestones are in the bag.

Why, you ask? Well, a point-of-time number usually doesn't tell you much about the path and the trend. You can find parallels in the stock market. And, besides, it's fun.;)

So, for a player to show up as a trend line on the following chart, he would have to be a current Pakistani player with a test batting average of more than 40.

Currently (and unfortunately), only three players meet this hurdle, but, hey, Taufeeq is on the fringes, and I expect others to enter the radar (another Bangladesh series on the way in 2012).

Oh, tests only, folks. Mohali kids - you can certainly find another thread to vent your deep spiritual libido.

Note: Between Zaheer and Saleem Malik, we have Hanif and Shoaib Mohammad.

Excel, my friend. Copy data from cricinfo + one click chart in Excel + a few more keystrokes to annotate = what you see above.

Well done Ironcat. And good luck Misbah and Azhar. The only bad thing is that Misbah is nearing retirement.

Yup, a low base on innings will help both Misbah and Azhar.

6 vs 5 would be good!

Cheers. Misbah may be able to pull it off after all. The one real leveller will be the SL series next year. Galle might show up on the chart above.

Nice thread and good graph.

Just a massive disappointment to see:

A) Only 3 of our players are averaging 40+. A comparison vs other teams would make for interesting reading.

B) Our second highest average-holder is not being selected. Travesty.

Whilst I would love to see MoYo at 6, I want him to put his grudges aside and smash every attack apart in domestic cricket. Make the selectors look stupid. But to me, he comes across as a guy who has given up the fight and he's showing that the selectors decision was justified.

Back to Misbah, I really do hope he gets there, but I do not understand why this jinx thread has been started!

First update, folks.

Younis has breached the current levels established by Miandad and Yousuf - though a cheap dismissal will pull it down again. Awesome!

Here we go:

Additionally, Taufeeq Umar is now on the graph.

Shafiq on the radar!

Edit by MODS;

Graph added in OP.

Define minnows.

To some, SL was a minnow in Miandad's prime.

And what shall we do with the WI?

In the 90's and 00's Bangla and Zim are minnows

Before that SL were minnows.

WI are bad but not as bad as a minnow.

As you know, the graph has limited real estate - after all the markup - but let me work on adding those three in a clutter-free way.

They don't know how to tuk and then go boomboom. Our Misbah is special. Thought they could tuk their way to a win. But only we can do that.

Even before the series started, Anderson said that he would try to frustrate Pak by bowling maiden overs...I just laughed---->

You don't frustrate Misbah by bowling maidens, he frustrates you.

But seriously though, we are blessed with exceptional spinners.

England needs to learn to bat slow on these pitches if necessary and not get frustrated.

He's coming, perhaps with a bit of Tuk, but he's marching royally towards your average you over-rated .

Honestly that Misbah 84 might be my favourite Test innings. EVER.

Just for the statistical unlikeliness of it all. First tuk, then two consecutiv sixes off Panesar. Then a lon period of tukking, not a single four for 130 balls. Then 5 fours in 22 balls. And then two consecutive sixes in the final over.

Deliciously unpredictable stuff. Reminds me of Abdul Razzaq's block-for-10-overs and then hit 5 sixes in 2 overs approach. But this was better cos it was in a Test match

He's too mighty and tall to be in the company of has-beens and never-beens like YK, Misbah, Azhar and Taufeeq.

Yup, I also believe that Azhar will get there.

And Ironcat, no Hafeez in the chart?

I will put him in once he crosses into 40s. Taufeeq was previously averaging 40+, so I have left him in there. The chart does get cluttered if you put more names.

Great graph but can Inzi's average be adjusted? He averaged over 50 for Pakistan - it was his "test" appearance for the ICC XI where he scored 0 and 1 which takes it below 50 and does anyone care about what he did for the ICC XI?

I hope one day they will remove that game from the test records though can't see it happening as Murli's 800 wicket landmark will be reduced to 792.

Is currently the golden era of Pakistan test cricket for batsmen?

* 1 batsman averaging 50+ (YK)
* 2 batsmen averaging 45+ (Misbah and Azhar)
* 1 batsman averaging 40+ (Asad)
* 2 batsmen averaging 35+ (Taufeeq and Mohammad Hafeez)
