Pakistani Taliban confirm peace talks with Islamabad

Pakistani Taliban confirm peace talks with Islamabad

Quote:
PESHAWAR: The deputy commander of the Pakistan Taliban, who have been waging a four-year war against the government in Islamabad, confirmed the two sides were in peace talks, a move that could further fray the US-Pakistan relationship.

Our talks are going in the right direction,” Maulvi Faqir Mohammad, the commander of the Pakistani Taliban in the Bajaur tribal agency and the No. 2 commander overall, told Reuters.

If negotiations succeed and we are able to sign a peace agreement in Bajaur, then the government and the Taliban of other areas such as Swat, Mohmand, Orakzai and South Waziristan tribal region will sign an agreement. Bajaur will be a role model for other areas.

Earlier, a senior Taliban commander and tribal mediators had told Reuters that the militant group was holding exploratory peace talks with the government.

The talks were focused on the South Waziristan region and could be expanded to try to reach a comprehensive deal. The Taliban were making several demands including the release of militants from prisons.

A tribal mediator described the talks as “very difficult”.

The TTP, a banned conglomerate of militant groups blamed for most violent acts in the country, welcomed the government’s offer for peace talks with all insurgent groups.

Maulvi Faqir and other senior TTP cadres are believed to be hiding in the eastern Afghan provinces of Kunar and Nuristan. Islamabad has blamed militants led by Maulvi Faqir for the recent cross-border attacks on its security forces.
Wonder what these 'talks' are really about (in terms of conditions), and if we can forgive & forget the men behind all these dead bodies, but then, for the sake of national security ? Dilemna.

Would be a good idea. Not entirely similar but look at Britain with the IRA.

I would like nothing better than for these rats to be exterminated but thats probably not possible.

I agree, the solution should be only political.

Just hope peace returns in these areas.

Wonder if the fact that every drone on our soil will be 'attacked' (read in the news) has anything to do with the on-going negotiations : remember that if TTP are against the Army, it's because our generals are seen, for the right reasons or not, as American's allies.
I don't buy the 'they want to impose the shariah' thing; perhaps the 'brains' behind the TTP are for these kind of tripe, but the 'average' soldier is certainly there to take revenge for his relative/friend killed in a drone attack.
