Email is bringing letter writing to a full stop among British teenagers, according to a survey.

Just under a third of girls aged 16 to 19 admit they have never communicated with friends and family by putting pen to paper.

The situation is even worse among teenage boys, with 51% of those questioned never having hand written the same sort of letters.

The findings are revealed in a survey of 2,000 16 to 19-year-olds by Connexions Card, an initiative to encourage children to stay on in further education.

Among other findings in the poll was the physical attachment young people have with their mobile phones.

Almost one in 10 of those questioned said they would be worried if separated from their handset for more than five minutes. Just 25% could cope without their mobile for a whole day.

Margaret Harvey, from Connexions Card, said: "It is clear that technology, whether it is mobile phones, iPods or word processing systems have a big influence on young people's lives.

"For young people they are much more than the time-saving devices they were initially designed to be and more a must-have tool that signals status and causes anxiety when not available."

The Connexions Card is an initiative that offers rewards and incentives, such as money-off vouchers for cinema tickets and clothing, as a way of encouraging people aged 16 to 19 to remain in further education.

The survey was carried out on the Connexions Card website during November last year and involved 2,000 young people throughout England.
