Afridi plans double-wicket tourney in Pakistan

to get international cricket back to Pakistan, former captain Shahid Afridi is thinking of organising a double-wicket competition, involving players from different countries, in the country.
"When I was in Australia playing in the Big Bash tournament, I spoke to number of top players from different countries to get their feedback on whether they would be interested in traveling to Pakistan for a double wicket competition," Afridi said.
The flamboyant all-rounder said he hadtried to convince the players that why it was so important for international cricket to be played in Pakistan and the response he had got from many players was positive.
"That is why now I am seriously planning to organise a double wicket competition with foreign players in a befitting manner but dates and venueswill be decided later," he said.
"New Zealand`s former captain Daniel Vettori, West Indian Chris Gayle and some Australian players were among those with whom I discussed this proposal and they expressed great interest in it and in playing in Pakistan," Afridi added.
No Test playing nation has visited Pakistan since March, 2009 when militants attacked the Sri Lankan team inLahore killing six Pakistani policemen and a van driver and wounding some of the visiting players.

If he manages to hold a such event and lures international players and get them to Pakistan then man has done a brilliant job.

There is a big difference in saying and doing, I will wait for him to do this first.

Good on Afridi for trying but i seriously doubt anyone (except Bangla) is going to be touring pakistan anytime soon. It may happen after another 5-7 years but its unlikely the happen prior to that. Players will be reluctant (and you cannot blame them after what happened to sri lanks) and the cricketing boards from different countries may advise against this.

with all due respect and credit, its not going to possible anytime soon.

no boards from international players will issue a NOC.

Nope. Any foreign team or player travelling to Pak is a bad idea. Not safe for foreign teams and players.

Be it a double wicket tourney(individual players) or a Bangladesh tour, not good idea.

If anything goes wrong, some player gets killed this time, then Pak we won't see a single player travelling to Pak for the next 10-15 years.

I actually used to enjoy the double-wicket tournaments we used to host a long time back. The Afridi-Wasim partnership were guaranteed winners.

It's fun cricket you know.

Afridi has been in the limelight this whole series. It doesn't matter what its about he is still there. But right now I am enjoying Ajmal more.

As for the thread. Its good that hes trying to get people to Pakistan but it just seems like a dream to see em there. It feels too good to be true to be honest.

Im sure if thy try they can provide sufficient security. Players don't have t come for long series it could be just few T20 games like a 4 game series. Pakistani crowd deserves to see their players also deserve t be able to ply at hone in front of their family and friends.

Good luck getting any international players to visit, Pakistan need Bangladesh to come first and if that goes fine then there is some chance of international teams visiting Pakistan in 3/4 years.

Yes he always comes up with the idea to help the country( but making money for his own pocket).

I am sure he is in talks with the Geo TV to cash it out as a joint venture.

Asif Zardari and Nawaz sharif also claims that they are helping the country.

As a businessman, I know where he going and what are his intentions are and what country means for these people.

PS: Since he came back, two days, two interviews

I remember the first one ever in 1997 I believe with Afridi and Aqib Javed. I went to the final of the double wicket tournament and I believe our opponent was South Africa? Man it was so long ago I dont even remember who the two players were that represented South Africa. I remember going to the final as a little kid at Gaddafi stadium. Memories. That was a time when Pakistan was relatively safe and teams used to come regularly to play international cricket!

I remember for a fact that the 2nd double wicket tournament's final was between Pakistan and New Zealand. Chris Harris and Nathan Astle represented New Zealand, and the match went down to the wire.

After that the tournament lost its charm with God knows how many Pakistan teams in one competition.

EDIT: Found the aritcle! http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/72831.html I was there that day =)
