In this story, Blue Valley Northwest High School (Kansas) senior Maggie Meier is finishing up her final season of high school basketball but her amazing story sends us back to 2008. During that year, Meier was a freshman on the JV squad but lost most of her season after falling into a life-threatening coma. Meier suffered from mycoplasma meningoencephalitis which causes the brain to swell and the patient to suffer seizures. As Meier stayed in the hospital for over two months due to her comatose state, something out of the ordinary happened. Meier started pretend to shoot baskets even though she was still in a coma: “I have never seen anything like it,” said Dr. William Graf, Meier’s neurologist. “The act of shooting a basketball must have been ingrained as one of Maggie’s basic instincts — her basketball shooting motion came back to her even before she was able to stand up or walk again.” Sometimes the family would transfer her into a chair where she would shoot a ball into a mini hoop. After a few minutes of shooting, she would go back to her comatose state. After awaking from her coma, Meier stated that she doesn’t have any memories of shooting while during her comatose state: “Coming back to normal, I hear stories like that, like shooting the beach ball,” she said. “I played basketball my whole life, since third grade. I had the knowledge of playing and knowing what was going on in a game.” In the fall, Meier will be attending Benedictine College in Kansas but has chosen not to pursue a college basketball career.
