I must say, Rauf has shown that he is a great student of the game. When Dilshan decided not to bowl at Pieterson because Pieterson kept changing his batting stance too early, Rauf knew the exact rule requiring Pieterson to be given a warning. Granted its his job, but think back to the shambles that was the 07 WC final, where about 5 umps between them displayed a total lack of understanding of the rules, and it shoes that Rauf is on it. That Brian Lara dead ball incident above shows the same thing - im not too sure that many umps would have known that rule.
He also mentions that boxing day match - I remember it like yesterday. Ball pitched in line, hitting middle of middle and Rauf gave it not out. Unbelievably, the Aus players were then surrounding Rauf and overheard on the stump-microphone ask Rauf if he properly understood the lbw rule. At that time, I thought Rauf would be a very average ump, but a few years on and he is seriously giving Dar a run for his money. Of course the humour is an added bonus. This IPL he has been too funny!

![]() Lovely man is Asad bhai. What's noteworthy is the admiration both Asad and Aleem Dar have for Steve Bucknor. Bucknor was a mentor to so many umpires, but it is sad how disgracefully he was treated during that Indian tour of Australia. |
