Whatever happened to Afridi's "quicker" delivery?

Afridi, during the early part of his career used to bowl a seam-up delivery, which was around 80mph. He was pretty effective with it too.

I know that his action when bowling it was called in to question (maybe in 2000?) and I don't think I have seen him bowl it since.

I know he has developed more variety in his bowling now but can anyone shed any light as to why he has completely abandoned the delivery.

Didn't look like a throw.

I would say good batsmen will see the arm coming over quicker and the slight change in effort. Killer delivery vs the tail though.

Was his action for that delivery ever truly questioned? I don't remember it being.

It's a bit like the mystery of the Gul yorker.

Don't know. As KhanJi says, most likely a confidence issue.

I think so. Maybe during the England tour in 2000. I might be wrong though.

In 1996 Carlton United series, he either bowled Steve Waugh or Blewett with a quicker one, you should see that, it was genuinely quick and the batsman was like what on earth was that, we need robelinda to find us that video.

Was Blewett. Who was a poor player of spin, I think one of the Pakistan spinners pretty much ended his career. I remember he just stood there like ***?

Don't insult Steve Waugh

@topic Afridi said Kamran Akmal had trouble keeping to that ball that's why he stopped bowling it.

Good work Anfield. What a lethal delivery, shame he's hardly used it in recent years.

Well because having Steve Waugh stand there totally confused is a different achievement to having Blewett totally confused.

I do remember Mushie cleaning up Blewett with a brilliant googly....man was a brilliant player of pace, had the sweetest pull shot i have ever seen. Couldnt play spin at all though.

Well, you need to bend your back more in these kind of deliveries. I think Shahid is struggling with his back injury, not sure though.

I don't think he had much confidence in it I guess; otherwise, he would have continued bowling it.

PakPassion.Net: Your faster ball has enabled you to take many wickets. Why have you stopped bowling this type of delivery?

Shahid Afridi: The reason for that, is that my faster delivery causes problems for the wicket keepers.

He still bowls it here and there but he's definetly added to his cavalry now, he bowls a decent wrong'un, flipper and even the slider that he didn't bowl before, then the offspinner, the legspinner and sometimes you just find him trying to do to much.
