How Awesome is Dhoni?

Saw a Tweet from ICC last night about dhoni and then KP's retirement today..

Dhoni in the last 7 years has played 570 days of International cricket(busiest cricketer in the world)....and then 60 days of IPL every year in the last 5 years...and then CLT20 every year from last 3 yrs with 20 days each...

that makes it 810 days of Cricket...not counting any training and tour matches....

And then he played all the days as a Wicket keeper...and 5 years of it as a Captain of Indian cricket team(pressure that comes with it)...

and has achieved a World cup, t20 world cup,no.1 test ranking, 2 ipl's, 2 ipl finals, 1 champions league...and among many other great finishes in ODI's..

Sheer amount of mental strength that is needed to get up and captain and wicket keep day in day out...

And then we saw many cricketers leave at a very young age recently from one form of the cricket or the other...

Pretty Amazing Lad...and find it amazing that I actually do not remember Dhoni getting injured at all..I know he was rested once due to work load...

Huge Respect!!!!!

Yeah he is pretty awesome man. Extremely dedicated, and the best part is how calm he remains throughout, inspite of all the criticism. Brilliant human being.

Been a critic of his captaincy off late, but will have to appreciate it.
Also good to see that new gen. of cricketers is giving priority to fitness. Specially almost every upcoming Indian batsmen is a very good fielder.

Why can't bowlers do the same. Can't bowl, can't field, batting obviously isn't their task.

Need to give him some credit for his mental strength, keeps getting whitewashed away from home but doesn't let it affect his IPL game and sponsorship deals.

Well done mate.

His fitness is something that has gone unnoticed. We've seen several players get injured so many times. I doubt he's ever asked for rest, except for the 1 time in Sri Lanka 2008 or 2009 test series. Another player that comes to mind is Raina but he didn't play a lot of tests.

120 odd days per 365 day year doesn't seem all that taxing, especially when most of these days would've been at home. Most Pakistani players, despite playing much less, are constantly away from home.

Is this a Dhoni-love thread btw?

Just read the op again and you'll understand. The 120 days are the match days, they do not include training and practice. And to add the fact that he is a WK who has to do crunches every ball. It is a huge achievement!

I've always been amazed at the amount of cricket Dhoni manages to play and on top of that the significant burden a captain of India has to carry including public appearances, promotional visits etc. Which was why I was confused when he was criticised a while back for wanting to be left out for the odd series to take a rest.

The schedule is not without it's issues though - he has no time for personal development which is seen especially in his lethargic and relatively poor test captaincy. He hasn't really learned a lot in tests, something I suspect he could have had he allowed himself the time to do so.

Extremely awesome. Dhoni averages 101 in wins whilst chasing at an SR of 90. Now that's what you call a match winner. The best finisher in the game. Outstanding numbers.

Very good mentally and physically as a player or captain..But his on field decision making like bowling changes and field placings have never been that impressive..He is solid in temperament and is very courageous only thing which i miss is his less effective thinking or decision making in the field...But he is a human ,is allowed to have minor weaknesses ..

I don't live in India and only have a few Indian friends. In the UK most cricket fans don't really care for LOI's. Fans here see Dhoni is a good LOI player, a decent leader but an average to poor test player. Test cricket is the real deal, if you fail there you won't be regarded as a great. I think the same goes for nations like Australia and South Africa. Only in Asia are LOI stars treated as greats.

and Dhoni's a terrific ODI batsman, decent in tests as well if he plays his natural game instead of trying to stick around and embarrassing himself. A brilliant manager and a reasonably good leader who's only negative point is his poor handling of our bowling resources. Overall i'm just thankful we have a braveheart like him.

^^ He handles the bowling resources India have brilliantly. Don't know why you'd say that?

It is quite funny when PP´ers complain about MS Dhoni not being good in Test cricket when the majority considers Shahid Afridi the best thing since sliced bread and some call him a legend 'in their books'.

Dhoni as a test cricketer is good. He is a decent/good keeper and his batting is pretty good too for a WK and is not a bad captain by any means in Test cricket too.

ODIs are where Dhoni really excels not just as a batsman but as a captain too. He is really good at utlizing his resources and reads the game very well not just as a captain but as a batsman too.

I am actually happy to see him in the shape he is after this 2 month gap. While most others(Raina, Zaheer) look like swollen potatoes .. Dhoni seems to have lost his tummy and looks fitter and better.

He sets a very good example to his team in terms of fitness, unfortunately most dont follow that example.

With Dhoni, we have a W/L ratio of 1.62 in Tests, without him its 0.65
With Dhoni, our ODI W/L record is 1.47, without him its 0.98.

Case closed.

In my opinion Dhoni is a brilliant batsman, and very talented captain, despite of heavy pressure he contains the match to beautiful ending without making any mistakes, that is the reason he is one of the successful captains in the history of India... Personally i don't like him, because he is not Pakistani. I only like Pakistani Cricketers.

Best finisher in the game. 3rd best ODI batsman. In my view the rankings should be like this:

Kohli, AB, Dhoni, Amla and so on..

that makes it 810 days of Cricket...not counting any training and tour matches....

Dhoni is good player

Couldn't midle one ball in the 14 he played. One of the worst T20 batsman around.
The only format he is good in is ODI!!

Yet he made more runs than the balls he faced and won his team matche. Even at worst, playing with injury he is amazing match winner.
