Hi sentence was 2.5 years, yet he's out after 7 months? Even on good behaviour that seems far too short.

So he went in for only 7 months? That's not even half of his jail sentence.

Anyway I do think the sentences were a bit harsh and I think he's learnt his lesson. I would welcome all cricketers back after they have served there ban but I wouldn't bring back Salman(talent wise). Mohammed Asif & Mohammed Amir are the two I'd still welcome back after their bans have been served.

If anything, Asif's the one that we should be completely against coming back. The guy has had so many chances and has repeatedly screwed up.

It could be argued (not by me) that this was Butt's first and only offence so should be considered for selection once his ban finishes.

He committed a major crime against every person of his nation, people like him should never even be allowed to speak about cricket let alone play it. He is the person who started all this, he was the mastermind of a major crime with Pakistan cricket and Pakistan nation and should never be forgiven.

I don't think so.

Being banned/fined for recreational or even performance-enhancing drugs is not the same as selling your country out.

I agree. I'm not keen on Amir's return. Imo he was lying through his teeth much of the time in the interview with Atherton - who by the way never asked him any challenging questions.

I think Athers made it quite clear that the interview was simply a way for Amir to tell his side of the story. The decision of whether or not to believe it was left up to us.

I don't think that was clear at all. It was an interview, with questions posed by Atherton, not a monologue by Amir.

And he never asked the difficult questions.

The guy should seriously come back quietly and start exploring options other than cricket to make an honest and respectable living. Thats the only way to redemption for him.

If he continues to fight a hopeless battle in order to return by giving statements in the media that he was framed or lodging appeals left and right, he is only going to stir up more trouble for everyone.

Pls see following Tweets from @Saj_PakPassion to clarify

Quote:

Salman Butt & Mohammad Asif were both given the option to sign deportation papers in their first few days at Canterbury prison #spotfixing

Asif declined signing the papers but Salman Butt signed the deportation papers which mean he'll only serve 25% of his sentence

Butt's sentence being reduced due to good behaviour is not accurate. Also I'm led to believe Butt is already at the immigration centre

For those asking about Athers, he's explained himself in the comments to the blog

As for Salman, come on, is he better than Taufeeq, Jamshed, Azhar or even Farhat?
Farhat averages more in tests than Butt, I mean, come on.

I hope he stop claiming innocence like he did before. I really hope he keeps a low profile and if he has to talk to the press, use that opportunity to apologize to the fans and all other players etc. He needs to stop acting like he did'nt do anything wrong and it was all a conspiracy against Pakistan. He needs to admit his role, apologize and move on. People have short memories and if he play his cards right, he might be able to salvage some dignity out of this. All depends on him.

If I were him I would say something like:

I got greedy, I made a huge mistake, I let my country and team down. I am responsible for it. I have paid the price for it. I have learned my lesson. Please forgive me.
