The World at their Feet.....Six Years On

6 years on and neither Anwar Ali or Jamshed Ahmed have established themselves in international cricket.

Whilst Anwar has been a steady performer in domestic cricket for PIA and Karachi and has been on the fringes of international selection, Jamshed has struggled to even break into first class class cricket, playing only 17 first class matches since his debut in 2005.

Whilst Under 19 cricket is a great stepping stone for many around the world, it seems that in Pakistani cricketing circles, success at Under 19 level does not mean success in future.

What about the third seamer, Akhtar Ayub was his name, I think. He looked as good as Jamshed and Anwar. He seems to have fallen off the face of this planet as well.

They have been treated in a shocking manner. They had so much potential and should have been invested in after their heroics in the U19 WC. Not surprised by the PCB though, as useless as ever. They bring back tried and tested failures like Sami back into the team and forget about the future.

Indeed.

Has been at KRL where he's struggled to break into the first team.

Anwar Ali has not developed his bowling much but has been a handy allrounder for a while now and can be tested in limited over cricket to replace razzaq.

This is what happens when u ignore players and just leave them at the helm of corrupt, nepotistic officials and cricketers managing first class cricket. This is why I am a huge fan of Imran's aggressive attitude of phaar do jaake, if he looks good in the nets, pick him regardless of his domestic records. Had the W's been left on their own without Miandad, Imran picking them and putting them in the team straight away our cricketing history might have been dull.

I hope the Sprite Cricket campaign and Akhtar's efforts to find someone from the streets of the main cities and outskirts bears fruit.s

That said, it is quite scary reading the names that came out of the the inaugral U/19 cup in 87.

Lara, Inzi, Mushtaq, Chris Cairns, Sanath, Atherton, Hussain.

Anwar at least deserved a spot in the upcoming T20 WC squad ahead of Razzaq.

Re the cricinfo article that has been referenced to only Eoin Morgan has gone on to prove himself as an international player.

So I really don't get Saj's point about Pakistan somehow failing u19 stars. In most sports only a few age group khilaris go onto the highest level.

Most of the other players have gone onto have decent domestic careers including Anwar Ali. Ali's level is first class cricket. He's on a par with steamers like Shahid Nazir and Rao Iftikar who were given a chance on the international stage but were really just decent first class players. So he can count himself a little unlucky not to have been given a go but it is very unlikely he would have set the world on fire.

As for Jamshed and Akhtar sport is the survival of the fittest - if they couldn't even forge a first class career what the hell chance would they have in test matches

You are being harsh, in our ******** culture many well deserving individuals rot away into nothingness.

Eoin Morgan - Ireland
Here is another talented Irish cricketer who will eventually have a choice to make. If he continues to score hundreds in a similar vein to his 124 against New Zealand he will start attracting attention and, as with his Middlesex colleague Ed Joyce, England will be one of the interested parties.

So what about all the other cultures - why have all those other under 19 stars not made it as international cricketers?

Sport, even in Pakistan, cannot keep out extreme talent

Could give you 100 examples from this Olympics with countries even more corrupt and unorganised than Pakistan

I don't see what is funny about this quote

Morgan while being shown to have flaws in test matches has proved himself to be one of the best ltd overs players in the Business

Salam Saj,
Is it not more of a case that after players finish under 19 their dont really have a stepping stone into the domestic teams. I mean as Anwar Ali finished he wasnt yet at the level to join a top domestic team e.g Karachi and the ones lower than them were not good enough. So he never would have got the chance he deserved or the coaching to carry on.

I find a lot of youngsters do well but are not given the chances at the right level after that. Maybe Pakistan needs a under 21 team and from there their can go onto the Pakistan A team. From Pakistan Under 19 to Pakistan A team is a too big of a gap.

This is the same problem football is having and their are trying to resolve the issues now with global events for under 19.

I don't think it's just simply a case of Pakistan failing u19 stars. More a case of what happens to this talent and why it fails in most cases to materialise or develop.

Also as others have mentioned nepotism is a real problem in Pakistan domestic cricket. Sadly it shows little sign of being eradicated.

Nepotism is the root of a lot of problems in Pakistan on every level. It is much more depressing when it comes to cricket though because of all the sheer talent that gets wasted for nephews and son-in-laws

With Jamshed, he's had some terrible problems at PIA.

I can't really go into the full details on a public forum, but I sincerely hope things improve for him.
