Summer Exams 2006

Who has exams coming up either in May or June or maybe in July?

I've got 8 and I'm haivng huge motivational problems!! I just can't seem to get my head down into a book and so some valuable revision. Anyone else having similar problems?

Any advice would be appreciated as to how I could motivate myself to do some revision.

I know what you mean, I went through periods of being unmotivated to study or revise for my university exams in April....You could do these things to motivate yourself -

- Think of the mark you want in the course and work your way to acheive it and how much you think you have to study to acheive your goal

- Study in groups sometimes helps as friends can motivate each other

- Only study for specific amounts at a time and don't overload yourself with inane facts

- Get out of the house and go to library, as usually parents bother you all the time to do stuff around the house

Thanks for the words of wisdom. The thing is that I'm not actually at home at the moment, I stay in uni halls, so you might think it would be easier to revise as there are fewer distractions. Well there are fewer distractions, but its like I want to do anything, except revise!!

Mind you I've always been like this, ever since I was around 16ish. Its just at uni I can't afford to to get through revising literally days or even the night before the exam type revision!

I have 3-4 exams coming up end of May. First year uni exams that is.

Maths, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics and Mechanical Science.

If I put enough effort in (which is not THAT much), I could get straight As. If I don't work hard, I'll just about pass. First year of uni is quite easy tbh. As long as you do your coursework on time and revise a bit before exams your safe.

Personally, I can't revise beforehand. There has to be a certain amount of pressure on me to actually get myself to study. Once I'm at it, I'm great at revision (as long as their is pin drop silence).

Me too. I know exactly what you mean. I thin you'll find a lot of people disagree with this.

A lot of people say they get very nervous during an exam. I'm very comfortable with exam conditions.

Courseworks are not that hard but there's a lot of work you have to put into it. I usually start when ther is just about enough time left to complete the work. As I said above, I work best under pressure.

I think it is better to study at night when there is no distractions.

Another thing is take regular breaks. Concentrate hard for shorter spells.

When i was doing Mechanical Engineering we had a Palestinian teacher that taught us - that guy was just mental, used to go ape when ppl turned up late for his lecture and you could barely understand his accent - also didnt help that his writing on the board was rubbish - that was painful

well i used to think Courseworks were better BUT that soon changed! courseworks are not hard aslong as you spend a little time on them (mainly on research) BUT when you do it at the last minute you make a lot of mistakes and the quality is pretty average!

I just checked and the deadline for my coursework is May the 11th 4pm - 6 assignments all of which i should have spent atleast a week on

Anyhow i did the same in January and insha'allah il make it this time

I have a lecturer like that though he's just strict and doesn't have communication problems. He is a maths lecturer, Arab I think.

As I live on campus, I hardly ever miss a lecture or tutorial and am very punctual.

I hate doing research. I do it all alst minute but somehow still produce good reports.

Your situation doesn't sound too good. Shouldn't you be working now?

Thats why I'm not holding down a part time job. I though as I am spending so much money (about 6k a year), I might as well study.

And anyway you only have to attend uni like 15-18 hours a week which is nothing.

In a couple of modules we get marks just for turning up!

I don't know how you do it GA, pulling off all nighters and completing all your assignments all in one shot....I've done it before in my 1st yr, but the pressure was too much, and since then have organized myself in way that I always finish assignments usually 1 week before their due in each of my courses.....

I screwed up my A levels and from then I decided to work hard and be organised. Theres only 3 years of education left so I might aswell work hard. It'll make the rest of my life more comfortbale. lol

I have a knack of starting work when there is just about enough time left. Mind you there is the odd job where its too late and you have to hand in dodgy work.

specially in the summer with all those girls and their skirts, really, naive. most naive.
did I say, girls and short skirts? i meant women in burqas, i apologise, must have meant that, promise.

as i grow older and dafter(read mirpurier) i wonder, does the fact that we study only because we have to study makes it more difficult?

Ive got first year medical exams and theres jus soo much to learn. You start learning wone thing and the next day you've forgotten it.

Mind you not attending a single lecture all year and doing no self study what so ever(we're supposed to do 40 hours a week I've barely manages 10 in the year) doesnt help too much.

I've got three exams in total:

30 May - Maths
8 June - Mechanical Science
13 June - Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics

I have enough time to revise. More than enough. That is the problem.

My one went really bad, forgot to take an eraser and a ruler in so most of my answers were dodgy!

Well i was putting my bag at the back of the lecture theatre and i already had my pencil and my pen in my hand so i thought I was all set....and besides places were running out quickly, i got a seat right at the front.

Then during the exam my phone starts vibrating

And good luck to you too!!

any one got any tips on how to revise to achieve the best results?

I find concentration an issue as well as distractions.

Start early

Read through your notes, making sure you understand them. A highlighter can come in handy here.

Make your own notes, that are more condensed, using bullet points, mind maps, key words etc.

Then say about a week until the exam, make notes again and do exam questions, the more the better.

Do a little the night before but get plenty of sleep, and don't miss breakfast.

Make dua before you go into the exam and inshalla you will get the marks that you want
