Depression is a unique state of mind.
What may cause depression in me and lead me to live an awful existence; give me suicidal tendencies; drive me to drink/drugs/food etc - may not have ANY adverse effect on you. Have no idea what the Islamic p.o.v is though - that would be interesting. I dont think prozac will be the answer though...

I usually go to these Islamic classes once a week. Last week this pschiatrist was talking. She did say it was perfectly normal to get stressed. There are things that cause stress and there are things that stress leads to - depression being one of them. Didnt get round to dealing with it cause we ended up going on a tangent

Stress and clinical depression are two entirely different things. Dont know the Islamic point of view but religion helps in depression. Have seen lots of people turning to religion after they get diagnosed with clinical depression.

Depression can often lead to despair.
In Islaam, despairing is worse than shirk. By this argument, if depression leads to despair, then, it is something a Muslim should try and avoid falling into. In fact, Rasool Allah, in his prayer, would beseech Allah to save him from becoming sad and depressed. This is why Islaam encourages Muslims to have an optimistic outlook towards life. This is why Islaam encourages a cheerful disposition. The Hadith: "Smiling at your brother/sister is charity" is part of this philosophy. |

Depression can be a frame of mind which can be fixed by looking at the religious angle or it is a medical condition - for which you need to see a doctor and get it treated !

In a nutshell...
From an Islamic viewpoint, you should not despair, but have hope. If you accept that whatever happens to you is pre-determermined by Allah (i.e. pre-destined), then you can never despair. Also, you must have faith in Allah and his power and that whatever is in your best interest will happen, and whatever has already happened is for the best. The point is that you are content with what you have and you have hope that whatever is best for you will happen.
