Happy Birthday Javed Miandad

The Karachi streetfighter

Pakistan's greatest batsman is born. From the moment Javed Miandad caressed 163 in his first Test innings, against New Zealand at Lahore in 1976-77, his career was touched by genius. He is one of only two men (England's Herbert Sutcliffe is the other) to have a Test average that never dropped below 50. Miandad made 206 in his fourth Test innings, and six double-hundreds in all. The only blot on his copybook is a modest record against West Indies - an average of 29 from 16 Tests - but it was against them that he played perhaps his greatest innings, a matchwinning 116 in Guyana in 1987-88. There was always the suggestion that you had to knock over all three stumps to get Miandad out at home: he was lbw 15 times in overseas Tests before it happened even once in Pakistan, but he was comfortably one of the finest batsmen of his generation. Miandad, who also played in a record six World Cups, loved a scrap: most famously, he waved his bat threateningly at Dennis Lillee at Perth in 1983-84, and mimicked Indian wicketkeeper Kiran More's hyena-like appeal by jumping and shrieking during the World Cup match at Sydney in 1991-92.

Miandad was my all time favourite batsman. I had the honor of watching his "never-forgetting" 1986 innings against India in Sharjah and boy what an inning and what a match it was. He, no doubt, was a street fighter who lived upto his character through out his career!!!

Happy BirthDay to JM. He truely was a great sportsman. I saw the video of his last ball SIX of 1986 Sharja Cup the other day. O boy I heard people talking about it but seeing it was just amazing.

full toss on the legs hoicked to mid wicket... that was a great shot indeed. i feel sorry for chetan sharma... all his other exploits will be overshadowed by his infamous involvement in that historic occurence.

i think that six changed a good deal other than just the match's outcome. that six invigorated pakistan with new found confidence and gave them then will to believe that they could beat the world. whereas it deprived india of confidence and plunged them into a state of self doubt and disarray that eventually culminated into Kapil Dev's untimely dismissal in the 1988 WC semifinal against Australia.

Miandad was a fierce competitor, both as a player and as a coach, though he had ver limited success as a coach. but wherever he was, he brought enough passion to set the stage ablaze.

If there has to be competition for one cricketing shot which hurt India the most, his SIX to Chetan Sharma would surely be the biggest contender.

Happy Birthday JM.

For that Last ball SIX to Cheetan Sharma, I was in the stadium and I would never ever forget those memories. People crying, my friend turned his back and stopped watching the last over and every body (especially Pakistanis) was dead silent and Indians cheering and there he was in the midst of a huge responsibility and my o my he did live upto the expectations!!! and the feelings my friends I could never describe and the "aftermath" atmosphere was just unbelievable. I still remember if it was just like yesterday. Seasons have passed, players have changed but that innings and especially that SIX changed the dimension of the cricket in Sharjah.....
When I was a child I also watched him in 1980 or 81 in Abu Dhabi when he brought his Habib Bank team on an unofficial tour and played with the local team comprised of Pakistani expatriates and he hit them all over the ground and few sixes were so huge that ball disapeared in the sea (the ground was close to the sea).... He really was an exceptional cricketer during that period and most of Pakistani batting revolved around him....

It was 1981/82 series against Australia in Australia. Miandad was made captain after 1979/80 series against India and he became captain in 1980 against Australia in home series. He was young (22 years old when he was made captain) and at that time Air Marshal Noor Khan who was head of PCB (I hope I am not mistaken) trusted his guts and took that action. It lead to many senior players turn against him and they did not co-operate with him in this first-away series for him as a captain. Lilly was furious as when he played in Pakistan in 1980, they had dead wickets (especially Faisalabad when he said that after his death they should dig a grave in that pitch and bury him). Miadad also used to get on bowlers nerves. So I think in the first test, in Perth, when Pakistan was dismissed for 62 in the first innings and things were going bad, this incident took place in the second innings of Pakistan when Miandad was batting. Lille deliberately obstructed him when he was taking a single. When Miandad with his bat carrying as casual kind of lightly pushed him away so that he could complete his single, Lille kicked him in his leg from back and that is when Miandad kind of gestured if he would use his bat against Lille and then umpire had to intervene. Lille was suspened for two one-day internationals. After this tour there was home series aginst the new test nation Srilanka. Ten senior players became against him being captain and threaten not to play in that series. Air Marshall Noor Khan made a new team with brand new players and started that series. It was the first match where Saleem Malik scored his first test century in his first match and he was also colleague of Miandad from Habib bank team. Miandad voluntarily stepped down as captain after that series so that Pakistani cricket wouldn't go through any more setback. He always put the country ahead of him!!!!

Many happy returns of the day, what a great batman he was. That record, though, against West Indies was modest but he can be forgiven - their bowling attack was the best in the world by far.

We don't have too many Pakistanis like him anymore. The greatest there ever was, the greatest there is and the greatest there ever will be.

For all who think Inzi is the greatest Pakistani batsmen you might as well believe in mermaids. Inzi the master of single digit runs, dropped catches, foolish run outs, and the Jerry Springer of Pakistani infighting.

Right. I hope I am not missing sarcasm and if I am then shoot me. But anyway....

1. Single digit runs? Inzi has been dismissed in single digits 42 times out of 180 innings (23%). Miandad was dismissed in single digits 38 times out of 189 innings (20%). Not much of a difference.

2. Dropped catches? Please tell me the last time Inzi dropped a catch. Thanks.

3. Foolish run outs? His running is actually better than Miandad's. Check out this table.....it will show you the % of run outs as well as the run out partner. Miandad is far far far worse than Inzi. Go here...http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/ci/co....html#thelist2

4. In-fighting? Inzi? Yeah......we will see if he dedicates an entire chapter in his autobiography to why his captain should not have declared when he was on 280.

I don't want to turn this into an Inzi vs Miandad thread....but such ridiculous comments cannot go without being replied to.

Happy birthday to the greatest Pakistani batsman ever and probably the second greatest player for Pakistan ever after Imran. Long live the King of Karachi

As for records versus west indies: ok it wasn't great but many players have bogey teams and west indies had the best bowlers then. However, he layed rest to the ghost he can't play versus them by making a brilliant century odd in 1987/88.

Sad though some of you are turning this into an inzi v miandad thread when the purpose is to wish javed a happy birthday. Inzy is a great batsman too in his own right but this thread is dedicated to Javed. If you can't wish him happy birthday and have nothing good to say then please dont post here.
