Struggling Slips

It seems to me that Pakistan has over the years had a huge problem in not having too many decent slip fielders.

In the current test match Imran Farhat has been drafted in to stand at slip and has "fluffed his lines". Even during the great era of the 2 W's, Wasim and Waqar would on a regular basis have catches dropped behind the wicket and would predominantly rely upon lbw or bowleds to get the bulk of their wickets.

Inzamam is decent, Younis Khan is good, but other than that we dont really have any decent slip fielders, yet countries like Australia have continued to produce great slip fielders.

Why cant we produce good slip fielders?

Just a theory

but perhaps playing conditions in australia and england produce more edges in general so the kids growing up there get more practice.

Though Pakistan produces excellent wicket keepers which probably refutes this theory

Why isn't Afridi tried in the slips? He IS one of our best fielders and he can't do any worse than Imran Farhat.

Imran Farhat just had a bad day at the office. Apart from that he is decent as a slip fielder, but best in the point position.

exactly raz - farhat should be in the infield.
inzi should always be at slip.

I don't think any team has more than 2 or 3 fielders who can qualify as specialists in the slips. With Inzi and Younis, Pakistan is not that far behind. Even Australia has had problems in the slips since Mark Waugh and Mark Taylor retired.

How guys are practicing slip fielding at the school and club level also determines how skillful they get at slip catching.

Hassan Raza is another very fine slip fielder.

PP beat me to a mention of Hassan Raza. From what I saw of him in the third test against England in Pakistan, he was pretty good. I've actually found Farhat to be quite reliable along the keepers side, but he's been poor in the first innings. Hopefully he'll pick up the slack in the 2nd innings

I rememeber Taufeeq Umar being very good in the slips. The sooner he gets back in the team, the better. I'd have him over Butt and Farhat any day.
