‘No point in playing a half fit Shoaib Akhtar’

‘No point in playing a half fit Shoaib Akhtar’

By our correspondent

LEEDS: Shoaib Akhtar’s chances of staging a comeback this summer rest on the fitness he shows in a side match against West Indies A as Chairman PCB announced here on Sunday only hundred percent fit players would be considered for The Oval Test.

Shoaib, who will now be a part of the national team struggled to get wicket in a third division match on Saturday, complained of getting stiff, following a long lay off.

“We will not consider Shoiab if he fails to show his hundred percent fitness before the fourth Test against England at the Oval,” the PCB chairman said while talking to ‘The News’ here.

He said that so far there were some signs of his recovery in time for The Oval Test. “He has to prove his fitness before staking his claim in the Test side. We will not consider him until he would be fit enough to give his hundred percent,” Shaharyar said.

He added the team management did not want to risk his injury. “We want to play a fully fit and committed team in The Oval Test. We do not want to try a half fit Shoaib. It would not only risk his injury but would also make us play with ten and a half players.”

Shaharyar said Shoaib was passing through a critical period in his life. “Playing a half fit Shoaib would mean we would be exposing him to injury and we do not want to do that. Another injury at this point of time could prove a telling blow as far as his cricketing career is concerned,” he said.

Shaharyar said he would be given chance against West Indies A team in the two-day game at Shenley. “We also want that the instead of playing two-day march we play a two one-day matches.,” he said.

The PCB chairman said if Shoaib succeeded in bowling good bowling spells he would be considered for selection in last Test. “That all depends on his performance against West Indies,” he said.

Shaharyar said Mohammad Asif has recovered in time to play the final Test. “Asif has passed a fitness test and has bowled ten overs with his normal pace in Lahore. We want to see Shoaib bowling with his normal pace also and that is what we are waiting is his complete fitness.”

Shaharyar said from now on Shoaib and Hafeez would be part of the team. “At the end of The Oval Test we will send about four players back home and that would be done in consultation with the selectors and the team management.”

He said the Board has yet to decide on participating in the tri-series in Abu Dhabi involving Sri Lanka and South Africa. “We are calculating our options and would consider on the benefits before deciding in favour of going ahead,” he said.

Shaharyar said if Pakistan decided in favour of playing in Abu Dhabi, the PCB might ask for the change in dates. “We could even request for changes in dates of the four matches we are schedule to play there in the last week of September,” he said.

Yes: Pakistan can not afford to destroy Shoaib completely before World Cup 2007...

Shoaib should not play in Oval if the series is 1-0 or 2-0 in favor of England: He should only play if it is 1-1 when Oval Test starts...

I agree you need to play test cricket at full fitness, I am pretty sure he won't be very effective at Oval after being out for such a long time so all of you who are looking for him to be a hero should calm down. As for Sami the less said the better.

What Shoaib really needs is to return to international cricket with a bang: Returning to make the series 1-1 from 1-0 will not be good enough accomplishment: But to come when series is 1-1 and make it 2-1 in Pakistani favor will be one of the biggest news in the hsitory of Pakistani Cricket...So Shoaib needs to assess the hype of Oval Test Match...Yes: He needs to be 100% fit: But that assesment is difficult to make...

Yes: Bangalore Test of 1980s is more famous, since that lead to winning the series...

Drawing a series is not much remembered...

agree...if we go into Oval down 1-0 without shoaib, we will most likely lose the series..and anyone would rather draw this series than lose it.

If Pakistan can win or draw this game then I feel he needs to be in the side or the 4th test

If we lose, then it is probably best if we didn't play him.

If he is fit, we should play him, if he's not, we shouldn't, simple as that.
