Shahid Afridi and Opening (ODI)
How many people believe that he should open. If not now, then how about for the World Cup or something. Malik shouldn't be experimented with at opening when he is a guarenteed performer at number 3. Also having Afridi opening has its many benefits if you don't consider Malik opening.
1. He will 9/10 get a quick 15-20 runs for sure. Maybe more, and 4/10 he will hit a 50 and a 1/2/10 he will hit a 100. Even the quick 20 can send England aback, and maybe a bit disturbed. The quick runs may come in handy. 2. It allows us to play another batsman, or another specialist bowler. If you think about another opener and Malik at 3, it makes it almost impossible for us to play a third specialist bowler, which we obviously need. 3. It utilizes Afridi more. Can anyone give me an instance of the last time Afridi scored us quick runs while playing at his "natural" position? He has always scored his best runs when opening, and that would be our best option. If someone disagrees with this stat, please post it. Your thoughts? |

Now he has scored 50+ scores(including hundreds) 25 times out of 139 innings. Thats about 1/6 times. How did you get the 4/10 number? He has scored 20+ runs 59 times out of 139 innings. Thats about 4/10 times. How did you get the 9/10 figure? |

I disagree with Imran Khan when he said that it was a mistake to make Afridi bat at no.7. I've always felt that Shahid should open simply because it gives his more time to cause distruction. Yeah he might get out for 0, 5 or a quick 20, but if he fires it's almost guranteed that Pak will win the match.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Afridi say he didn't want to be an opener? I remember him and YoKo having an argument about this at WI in a test, and I assume Afridi meant he didn't want to open in general.

Few centuries, he has to his name, came into being only on occasions he opened. If he had his day, he could be as brutal as nearly irresistible against any attack of the world; he needed work only on
his indulging himself with Stupid shots. He is good opener, to have a hell of difference between two competent teams. Last edited by bakarashi; 12th August 2006 at 16:03. |

Afridi had a big argument with Younis in the Windies saying he didnt want to open and I dont think he should open since he doesnt have the patience to wait till the ball stops moving around before he launches

Yea googly the stats were made up on the spot, sorry!
Well I guess if Afridi said he didn't want to open, then he won't. But honestly its in the best interests of the team. When has he done something down the order? |

isnt khan at no 3. I prefer malik as an opener. however in ODI's afridi cud destroy the opposition right from the start. He could play a similiar role to sehwag for india

![]() Btw, I really don't understand why people want Shoaib Malik opening. Just look at his ODI score at number 3! |

Afridi Opening can be dangerous but he needs to be more consistant.

Depending on who he faces. He is not smart like Sanath Jayasuria in the mid 90s. He was willing to be patient. Shahid Afridi more like "i will hit through the line no matter where you bowl" kind of guy. Hence Jayasuria is more consistent and can carry on to make big centuries. Afridi's ratio is pretty bad because of his inadequate cricketing brain.

Afridi is better down the order. A quick 30 or 40 at tail end of inns will do more damage than a short cameo at top of inns. At end of inns, the oppostion have no real time to repair damage done. At top of inns a longer inns will be required to damage runs wise.

Never open with Afridi, 6/10 times he will get below 40. I know its a quick fire, if he opens in the WC he will get demorolised by McGrath, Ntini, Pollock, Vaas and co.
