What Cricketers Have you met in person?

Had any interesting conversations with any?
Did your encounter change your view of them?
Growing up in Canada I've met three when they came for the Sahara Cup.

Moin Khan, very funny guy, nice person

Chris Gayle before he was gonna play his first match!! never imagined what he'd become.

and Mohsin Khan who grew up in the same Karachi Airport Mohala as my Father. (Mohsin was kind of a snob in my personal opinion)

How about you guys?

SHAHID AFRIDI: i met him at someones house in london during 99 wc, he was nice, he said i can come and meet him any time at his hotel too, but wen i went there the next day he was with wajatullah wasti and there was about 100 ppl in the hotel corridor.

waqar younis: when i went to see afridi, he was in his room sleeping, there was so much noise that he just woke up it was about 6 pm. he gave everyone autographs and went back to sleep.

shoaib aktar: waqar told us were his room was, we were knocking on it for ages and after 10 minutes he opened the door with a towel wraped around him and shaving cream all over his face and said ''sorry im having a shower'' and shut the door.

razzak: i saw him shopping in london during world cup, the most shy guy ive ever met, he hardly speaks.

i also saw the whole team coming out there coach once after wc cup final and i had front seat, right next to the door , saqlain was the only one who gave an autograph and i had to run shoaib to get one, he looked like he wanted to cry. |-Q [/b]

Met all the players from Pakistan teams from 1986-1992. They meant nothing to me.

However, my most treasured moment is meeting the GREAT Viv Richards. Spoke to him for 20 mins, got a photo taken with him and a few autographs-this was in 1987 and then again in 1991 when he was Glamorgan player.

However list of players played with - not against include Ian Bell, Richard Montgomery (Sussex), Wasim Khan (Sussex), Alamgir Sheriyar, Dominic Ostler. Against is much longer but I won't bore you!

Met the whole Pakistan team when they came to a mosque in Dewsbury (Markazi mosque, anyone heard of it?)

Met Razzaq in person, hes a brilliant lad........ Afridi, seen him but havent really met him, he's much bigger than he looks on telly.

I once walked into one of my gujraati friends house......there was smoke all around which was unusuall coz i knew no1 in his family smokes. As i walked through his hallway and the smoke cleared, i saw the most horrific site ever a site which to this day gives me nightmares.... it reminded me of 'gorillas in the mist' ....... as the smoke cleared there 'it' was .... sitting there, gold braclets.. gold rings ... cigarette in mouth ... VINOD KAMBLI !!
I swear guys, this guy was really really dark skinned..... i wasnt really into cricket back then, i asked my mate who that was an he told me. I'm never gonna forget .... scarred for life!

Tendulkar was another who used to walk around in Dewsbury, he once nearly got beat up by my cousins (coz he was indian )

Did anyone know Mohammed Kaif used to work in Batley (near Dewsbury) he used to pack nappies. :-D This wasnt that long ago either, maybe 3 yrs ago.

I have seen quite a few from a yard or so, but shook hands with Akram and can't believe he asked me how do I do. I also had a little chat with Mushtaq Mohammad.

Oh and Ramiz waved personally to my nephews and I...lol

However, for me what beats all that is the very interesting and livley conversation with Geoffrey Boycott on Talk Sports telephone line when we had a few laughs and he just laughed when I told him u English have an excuse for everything. I gave him a list of classic english excuses for losing and he cracked up. Eg, diarrohea as an excuse for losing in India in 1993, ball tampering, umpires, sight screen, colour of someone hair etc etc. The list is endless with England but Boycott did actually agree that when England lose they make too many pathetic excuses and not look at the real reason. Sadly the tables have turned and England are no longer the whipping boys but quite the opposite.

I've met Imran Khan when he started his charity appeal in 1991.

Met Moin-ul-Atiq (played 2 odi's for Pak in late 80's). He lived in our local neighbourhood in Karachi. When he came back from his tour of Australia (1988/89), he gave his green coloured kit to his small brother who played cricket with us in the mohala. We all got a chance to wear the bright green pads (which at the time was a big deal for us young teenagers then)...and fought to no ends over them.

Moin was the proffesional player for Scottish club East Kilbride. Once we were going home from the ground. A **** kindly offered to drop us off to the nearest rail station. Once we got to the station, Moin told us to lie to the **** that all trains were cancelled. The poor guy dropped us back home which was an hours drive away :-D

Met Manzoor Elahi at Kelburne, where he was the proffessional. Very nice approachable guy, told me to spend equal time on studies. :-)

Went to meet Razzaq in his hotel room in Multan during last years tour by India. Very down to earth guy, quiet and simple.

I met these guys all in the london airport after they were returning 4-1 series defeat in Sahara. Others were there too but I only talked to them. Me and sister talked to Hasan Raza for quite a while , he was injured on his right hand and i gave him a strong handshake and he started wimpering; was funy I think he was 16 bak then (i myself was only 11).

AFridi/Inzi were quite rude ... I say that becuse we were practically the only pakistanis there and the only people who actually recognized they were stars yet they didn't give us attention like one would expect. Oh well, they think they'r too good for every1 else can't blame them. Saeed, Saqi, and Hasan Raza were who I found to have xcellent personlities; gave their time and just chatted to me and dad etc; cool guys

O ya.. met Amresh Puri too Pretty nice dude

I met Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Qurban and Mohammad Shakil.

They were outstanding sportmen no kidding. They used to play in the field adjacent to the cricket ground - and wack the gully till the cows came home. They were cricketers as well - the gully danda wack was their speciality.

They tried to introduce me to the finer points of the game - which was coming along well and fine till I wacked one right up someone's dhoti! No kidding there either!

I took a graceful retirement then, but these three epitomised the best of Pakistan cricket/gully danda.

They played for the love of it - not money or fame.

I was touched and carried the spirit onto a cricket field. The sound of danda mettng gully will stay with me forever.

Met Saqlain in 2002 at a coaching session. Had a picture taken with my son for the sponsers.Brilliant guy and genius bowler. Met Mushtaq Mohammed at a club match and was so happy to see him and went to talk to him and but when i saw him with a glass of beer in his hand i felt sick and just walked away. Yrs later Hasan Raza did exactly the same with his can of fosters and i felt disgusted again. Met Mohammed Amir in Leicester in 2008 at an under u19 match and found him to be an arrogant git although our villages are within walking distances. Mark Wagh the ex Warwick player came and played in our club and was a star. Down to earth and amazingly intelligent.

Imran Khan. He came to my school when I was 6 years old. He was collecting donations for his cancer hospital at that time. Got a chance to shake the great man's name.

Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Met them at the golf club in Lahore in late 1997. It was a few days before the four nation tournament featuring Pakistan , Sri Lanka , South Africa and West Indies took place. I was accompanied by my parents and got the chance to have a little chat with them.

Asif Mujtaba and Nadeem Khan ( Moin Khan's broher , played a couple of test matches , I think ). Met them in Liberty Market , Lahore. It was in 2001 I think and I was getting food at One Potato Two Potato. I recognized Asif Mujtaba but my cousin told me who the other guy was.

Shahid Afridi at the Karachi Airport in 2008 , on my way to San Francisco.

Misbah-ul-Haq. Last year in Karachi. I have a friend who studies at Defence Business College and there is cricket ground nearby. I was hanging out with my friend there and we heard that Misbah was practicing nearby so we went over. Had a little chat with him.
