The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time was the cover story of a special issue of Rolling Stone magazine, published in August 2003. The guitarists included come mostly from the rock and roll era, with notable exceptions from other genres like blues and jazz, and then usually artists who had been major influences on the rock guitarists.

Jimi Hendrix ranked #1 .

Notable guitarists not on the list include

Slash (of Guns N Roses, Slash's Snakepit and Velvet Revolver), Joe Satriani (solo), Steve Vai (of Alcatrazz and solo), Yngwie Malmsteen (of Alcatrazz and solo), Joe Walsh (of The Eagles and The James Gang), Roger McGuinn (of The Byrds - fellow Byrd Clarence White was on the list), Andy Summers (of The Police), Glenn Tilbrook (of Squeeze), Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford (both of Genesis), legendary (not to mention left-handed) bluesman Albert King, Tommy Shaw (of Styx and Damn Yankees), Ted Nugent (also of Damn Yankees, as well as solo), Peter Frampton, Lita Ford, Bonnie Raitt, and many renowned jazz guitarists.

This was an absolute farce of a list to have Kurt Cobain at 12. Great singer and songwriter, but very middle of the road as far as guitar playing skills.

There is absolutely no way hes better than Tom Morello, Santanta, Eddie van Halen, Randy Rhoads or Dave Gilmour

If Cobain was on the list, Mike McCready from Pearl Jam and Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains should have too as they were far superior guitarists

Also quite a shock that theres no James Hetfield (Metallica), Dave Mustaine (Metallica and Megadeth) or Dimebag Daryll (Pantera)

Daoud quite a few people have dispute with this ranking ,including me.

There is also heavy criticism by women guitarist for not adding their names to the list.Only two women guitarist.

I dont care about the lack of women guitarists, the ommission of guitarists who deserve to be there is a far bigger issue.

A very subjective thing..some of the greats were backing band members before the whole 'rock band' thing became popular..and from a subjective point of view agree with daoud..van halen could make that guitar talk....just becuase a guy didnt get to play in a popular band or with a popular artists has no bearing on his his talent

When you look at the guitarists who havent made it, its hardly of a consequence that him or Salman Ahmad arent on the list

Clapton is excellent - Tears in Heaven for example is a beautiful song

My personal top 10 would have a hard rock/80s metal bias as thats what Im most familiar with, and I havent heard enough blues/stuff from the 50s and 60s, but here goes:

1. Jimmy Henrix
2. Slash
3. Jimmy Page
4. Eddie Van Halen
5. Kirk Hammett
6. Eric Clapton
7. Tom Morello
8. Dave Mustaine
9. Dave Gilmour
10. Randy Rhoads

Thats a good list but i will certainly have Chuck Berry in my top 5.

Jhonny be Good is just classic.

I am quite happy that you also ranked Jimi Hendrix at no 1.

Kurt cobain is soooooooo over rated !

His biggest asset was his good looks...n being killed of OD only helped his popularity!

That is very true. As a guitarist he wasnt anything great and even vocally - while he was good, he was no match for his 'grunge' contemporaries Eddie Vedder, Layne Staley and Chris Cornell

How he was ranked so high as a guitarist is beyond me though
