The Art of Death Bowling, What has happened to Pakistan?
The Art of Death Bowling, What has happened to Pakistan?
Pakistan used to be the best team at bowling in the depth overs from overs 40-50, but in the last year they have really struggled to contain teams and regularly concede more than 80+ runs in the last 10 overs. Even teams like Zimbabwe have in the recent PakTel Series were able to take advantage, and in the last match WI scored over 140+ runs in the slog overs. What are Pakistan doing Wrong? Isnt that what Waqar was alluding to on TV, the distinct and utter lack of "in the block hole" or yorker type deliveries ?
Rana was trying to bowl something at the end but the ease with which Lara was swatting those for Six was disgraceful to watch ! Regards

Sami, at least at times, has shown he can bowl well in the end overs.

From what I saw the likes of Azhar, Rana were bowling length bowls at the end of the innings which is criminal as the batsmen can get underneat the ball as Lara was doing and go over the the infield.
I did not see many yorkers bowled at all, a few slow balls from Rana but misdirected. There were also not bowling to one side of the wicket. |

Just a short note and pls do correct me as my cricketing knowledge is weak here, are the overs you refer to not known as DEATH overs as opposed to DEPTH overs ? Can you pls clarify that for me Waheed as that term is confusing me a little.

I haven't been able to watch any of this year's VB Series so it's difficult for me to comment specifically on Pakistan but I do feel that 'death' bowling is a skill that the majority of teams are struggling at.
This is down to two reasons, for me: - lack of a game plan and consistent thought processes - an inability to consistently bowl yorkers |

Who should bowl at the death for Pakistan now?
Shoaib and Rana? Razzler is good at mixing it up - and so too is Afridi. |

Well folks read the thread i had started a while ago in which i had asked when will there be another Waqar or Wasim, that is the question that will need be answered for this one as well...Reverse Swing,Death bowling are badly missed, though there is still a bit left in Reverse swing, its not even close to what it used to be when Waqar was around, pak needs him as bowling coach,no other way to fix these shortcomings.

Rana Naveed has the potential to be a very good death bowler. Can bowl good yorkers at decent pace and varies his pace well.

Bear in mind that while our current bowlers are no Wasim (don't know where Waqar comes into it - he was nothing too special in the ODI format) - the batting skills of lower order and tail end batsmen have increased since those days.

Its more of a mental strength issue than lack of skill that current pakistani bowlers have.
well that assumption clearly does not take sami into consideration. but all others includin shoaib, razzaq, rana are capable of bowling quick reversing yorkers.. and thats all they have to do. im sure we would be ok. |

Don't forget that most of Pakistan's bowling attack has been out for nearly two years now. Now that we finally have(or had, before Beera was reported)
all our resources at our disposal, let's see what happens, Pakistan has been a changed side this series. Why? To me the foremost reason is a fully fit squad after an eternity. I'm hoping that will show in the death overs as well.

Quite honestly, in recent times in ODIs our strength has been our batting rather than our bowling as in late 80s to early to mid nineties. where our batting would usually crumble chasing totals.. now we are a solid ODI batting side .. but regardless of that, our at the end of the innings ODI bowling does seem to lack the same sting it used to have.. no surprises there, though.. its not easy replacing wasim and waqar.. and sudden decline of razzaq has not been of much help..
we are aslo forgetting another bowler who was pretty good at bowling the last overs.. saqlain mushtaq. |
