Healy bitter after farewell

AdvertisementAfter being denied an emotional send-off to his glittering career, Ian Healy hopes Cricket Australia learned from Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer's retirements and offers a fitting farewell players in the future.

Healy described the treatment of past Australian greats as "ridiculous" and hoped CA and national selectors had now turned the corner.

Healy's request for a farewell at Brisbane was rejected in 1999 despite his playing 119 Tests. He played his last Test in Harare. Healy said the same "dumb" treatment was handed out to Allan Border, Mark Waugh and David Boon.

"At the time I said it was dumb that Allan Border, David Boon and my own retirement wasn't done like that [SCG send-off] - it was ridiculous," Healy said.

"Mark Waugh was another one. I think if you are a 100-Test player you deserve to walk off the field saying goodbye. Maybe they have finally got it right."

Geez Healy sounds like a bloody sook and has let himself down by whinging about this. You have to earn each Test you play, they're not given away like lollies at a fair. If he wanted a farewell Brisbane test and was confident in being selected, then maybe he shouldn't have announced his retirement until after he was picked and Gilly could've been picked after his retirement a la Nasser Hussain or Marto. What a whinging bleating sook. Pidge, Warney and Gnome were still at the top of their game when they retired, so it's not like they were "given" the chance to play, just like Steve Waugh was when he retired. Waugh knew he wasn't going to get picked after that India series so he chose to go on his own merits.

Give yourself an uppercut, Heals!

it's good to see some dysfunction that doesn't involve the Pak team for a change.

Well Healy seems to have forgotten that he was hyping up Warne/Langer/Mcgrath's farewell by following them around with his microphone at the end of the game - he could have refused!

No Pak player has ever had a proper send off - I am hoping that Inzi will be the 1st in my lifetime!

Yeah that's true. They always just disappear, either after never returning from an injury or just dropped because of some dispute etc..

I just can't think of any gracious Pak retirements.

You only get a good retirement when you decide to retire before the selectors drop you. Healy should have retired earlier and let Gilly take over instead of trying to hang on too long. Inzi will face the same problem, will he go before he is pushed or will he hang on too long.

If he hangs around AFTER the World Cup, then he asking for trouble as the selectors are usually quite ruthless in disposing of legends unceremoniously.

Best to go when fans are wishing you stay for 'just 1 more series' and not when they ask 'was it 1 series too much'.

Oxy is right. No Pakistani has ever had a nice retirement send of, they've either been dropped or injured. Inzy should be and deserves to be the 1st.

yeah I always felt that it was very sad how the career of miandad ended, esp in comparison to imrna khan. Imran went out after winning WC'92. Miandad, who one can argue, did more to win the WC 92 then any other player, went out after a very disappointing performance in WC 96( both by miandad and also Pakistan). Certainly by the end, I was glad that Miandad was retiring, he certainly deserved better than that.

Well said. Wanting a bit of a send-off is a bit selfish too.

The problem in Asian cricket is that many cricketers play for too long because the selectors do not gently ‘push’ them in the right direction.

In Australia they do. Border, Mark Waugh and Healy, were all gently pointed to the right direction, thus avoiding what often happens in Asia where cricketers go on for too long.
