Got fined for breaking the signal a couple of times but thats about it, second time the policeman was a bit too harsh, there were three cars ahead of me who took a u turn on a red light so I also took one and the policeman only bothered to stop me. As far as helpfull is concerned the guy couldnt even read or write I had to read out my ID card number to him and that too in Urdu because he couldnt understand counting in English.

Nauman yaar I thought you would have said you were a family friend of SSP and gotten away or did you not try that ;)

Recently in Pakistan when I went to Lahore to pick up a friend from the airport I got pulled over and I almost got into real fight with the cops as they thought I would simply pay them and let them insult me. In Jhelum I know them so I have never been stopped as I or my brothers have friends who are in police anyhow.

I went to a police station in Jhelum to say hi to a friend of ours and I saw them dealing with two brothers...I swear I almost cried or cried in my heart. The way they insulted them is beyond words....I had to excuse myself.

I got pulled over by the motor way guys twice. I know I was speeding my cousin got out from the back without any word went ahead paid and we left...I have seen those guys talk and they are very nice unless you really ticked them off.

I can't remember the last time I was pulled over in the US.

Just the once - forgot to put my lights on whilst driving at night (was a well lit area so cudnt tell) - they were polite and understanding, just asked me for my details, realised i wasnt a thief (who on earth would want to steal a Toyota Corolloa ) or a boy racer and i was on my way

In the UK the police are on the whole okay - well they are MILES better than the police in Pakistan who unbelievably corrupt. When i was in pak last year the corruptness of the cops really got to me

I was going over to Islamabad on motorway when one of the head lights went out all of a sudden got pulled over, he was going to fine me 1000 for that but when I explained it to him he was courteous about that, called a mobile repair van and had the light fixed. Compare that to the experiences I have had with Islamabad and Lahore police Ill say Motorway police rocks.

1) Once got stopped by the police in Glasgow city centre. Rightfully so, as I nearly crossed red lights twice (argued lights were amber). It was a packed police car (going to a dawat?). I was asked to do the breathalizer test They gave me a £30 fine and 3 points. I failed to pay the fine on time and was asked to wait for the reminder, which never came.

2) Got stopped on the M6 near Carlisle heading to Scotland. Was caught doing 90mph. My wife was not well then and was lying in the back. The policeman was a gentleman and let me go.

3) Got stopped in Newbury due to a faulty headlight, policeman asked me to get it fixed and then get an mot stamp ceritifcate from a local garage and send to the station. I was a week late sending the certificate and got called into small court. Got fined £30.

4) Was reversing back to come out of a store carpark and bumped into a policeman's car..lol. He was off duty and driving his personal car. He claimed against us successfully.

UK police are generally well mannered (based on my experiences)

Pakistan

Pretty simple, 100rs rishwat or name of a known DIG works everytime even if you are not gulty. No point argueing

Now that is COOL! you won't find that anywhere else in the world. I seriously do like the motor way police or even the local highway division. I wish the rest of the police force could be like that.

Even though I know plenty of people who are in Police and I do like them as they are always very nice to me and than one of my best friends is also in police but I truely do hate the way the police deals with people. It is beyond insulting and recently seem to hate everything with the local police.

I have always had good experience with Police from UAE, US, UK, Spain, and Pakistan (believe it or Not but I had very good experience with them), Immigration, Customs, Embassies etc. etc. The only time I had a little (a very mild one) incident was at Heathrow airport where a south-asian british girl thought she was too smart and I just did not waste my time and immediately spoke to her supervisor, who in turn apologized and gave me some extra services as a courtesy. YES I hold a Pakistani Passport as I am a born Pakistani citizen.........

Stop & Searched once in London - unpleasant - but thats life.

In Pak, I was stopped by the police when I went for a walk with my wife, and was asked to produced proof that I was married!!! WHo the hell carries a certificate of marriage with them.

Was about to be arrested until some guy who I never met, stepped in and confirmed that we were married - apparently he knew my grandfather or something bizzare.

Thats changed under Musharaf where its now legal to indulge in such acts without fear!

Yeah, motorway police is miles ahead of the city. They go about their business very professionally- no bribes, etc. Lahore police, a completely different story.

It was around the time after the July bombings and when the brazilian got shot. The police man tried being a smart ass and sed whats in the gym bag looks a bit dodgy smiling to the other copper. so i replied arent you meant to shoot me 1st and then ask questions like you did with the brazilian.... his face dropped and he walked away and the other copper was sniggering at him...... so i had the last laugh

That was the law of the land in those days!

I have a relative that was arrested in Pak - and taken to the local jail, where he stayed for 4-5 hours until his in-laws turned up with Nikah ceritificate.

All he was doing was going for a meal with his wife!!!!

I honestly can't imagine what I would do if this was to happen to me. It is hard to imagine there are still people who want things to be like that where people can't even take a walk with their wife or have a meal without being arrested.

I do wish some day we wil be able to get mature level headed guys in local police who trained to handle situations well like the motor way guys. That will truely boost and trigger improvement in our culture and country.

In the UK.. my car got stolen.. called in the local police .. 2 hours later they arive.. a man n woman.
The Man is taking notes and getin my statement, usual paperwork which took nearly 1.5 hours!
The woman pc, is looking around the house.. looking at the decorations and generally being THICK! she even said, its ONLY a car why are you lot stressed out for.. wanted to slap her onetime...

U know wat their response was? We only got 12 police officers on duty so we cant go out to look for you car!

In pakistan, i see a police officer just pull nex man over, and say i'm taking ur motorbike for police duty... and he sped off!!!
The poor bloke was looking around like .. now wot the fcuk shall i do !?!

do you judge a book by its cover?? honest opinion. if you see a young black guy on the street what do you think automatically?? or better still if you see a black guy in a flashy car, do you put two and two together and say guilty???

I honestly do not look at people's colour when I see somebody in the street. What I may do is get suspicious if somebody is dressed in a certain way / image.

I would call it a hunch that I have developed from my street skills. If police officers had no hunch then everybody would be saint and nothing would be a solved.

Hence, politeness and the way you represent yourself counts for alot.

I have honestly not come across blatant corruption.

I may have seen lazy officers not doing jobs to their full potential which may be classed as a form of corruption due to integrity.

There a stringent guidelines police have to follow and if there is any corruption it will be extremely underground, no chance that a small cog like me will see it!

I saw recruitment ads, and then it dawned upon me that I could earn semi decent money doing a fun job.

I don't normally share my stories when I meet up with my mates as there week seems alot more normal and can't relate to it. Its good to keep normal people around you though do see that everything is not doom and gloom.

It is not always encouraged, and I certainly got stick from acquaintances before I joined but you soon realise who your mates are. You do sometimes have to be thick skinned.

What would you say to someone in the UK who has had many experiences with the police but yet been treated as a criminal even though they are fully legit person yet the police always seem to act arrogant, ignorant and akward towards them. One example is going to a police station for advise and being told nuffink to do with them as the incident happend in a different town

Why have you had many dealings with police?

I cannot give my opinion on your specific incident as I would need more details.

In every job you get good and bad people. Why don't you share the full facts?

I am afraid it is not simple as that. They need to plan things out hire good new blood with good training from different cities throughout Pakistan educated guys who don't have jobs. Through training make sure there is a very slim chance of these guys going currupt.

One of my dearest friends was one of the 5 original guys [1 girl] in Pakistan who were trained for elite police force by a french team who came to Pakistan. According to him when they originally came out people were scared to even approach them because they were given list of 13xx most wanted in Punjab within 2 years only 300 were left...they simply shoot them dead.

Where it had its adventages it had its probs...few names were added by the Chaudhrys or shahbaz sharif for their own good but atleast they got things done and now they are nothing again because they have been currupted too...he was also shahbaz sharif body guard when the army took over lol so we hear lots fun stories... he remembers them as painful memories...

I just hope they come out with a new division in the police force and slowly introduce that throughout Pakistan with careful planning
