BCCI sacks Chappell

BCCI sacks Chappell

By Tapan Joshi | Saturday, March 24, 2007

Sharad Pawar-led Indian cricket Board has refused to take the blame for the team’s shameful performance in the 2007 World Cup. Instead, it has just shot down the first victim.

Axe has fallen on coach Greg Chappell, who has been informed that his contract will not be renewed. The former Australian skipper’s contract with the Indian team ended with the game against Sri Lanka, which Rahul Dravid’s men lost by 69 runs.

Said a top BCCI source, “The formal announcement will be made by Board president Pawar in a few days’ time but we have conveyed our feelings to the players and also to Chappell. He has been told that he can pack his bags.”

Rahul Dravid was also appointed skipper only till the World Cup and his fate hangs in balance. Dravid himself admitted that he is no longer the skipper. There is intense anger in India, and heads were bound to roll.

if the BCCI wants to send out a message there is only 1 step they need to take:

There is no news on internet or TV about this, BCCI vice president said that they will only take a step when team returns. Dont know who made this up. Dravid is in more danger than Chappell.

Where was this story published? Who was the 'top BCCI source?' If this story is true, then the 'top BCCI source' ought to be packing his bags along with Chappell for speaking out of turn before any 'formal announcement' is made.

Agree with that...Tendlya should retire from ODI. Just stay for test matches...I guess. People in the media were saying that he should be made captain. I DON'T THINK SO...Hello?

Tendlya is over rated in the sense that he has not played many match winning innings. His statistics might be great, but he becomes from HERO to ZERO as we all witnessed recently...

Tendu has hardly ever played for his team, all he has done is create records for himself with all the money of course.

India failing in the crunch match V SL was as predictable as was Tendulkar getting bowled for a duck in a crucial encounter. Would be a great shame if that was indeed the last WC innings of his career.

Not many were expecting Chappell to have stayed as coach after the poor Team India showing either.

Apparently they're planning to make Tendy the captain.

Will Sachin Tendulkar be the captain?
Times Now
PrintCommentMail

NEW DELHI, March 26: Team India is out of the World Cup. The team performance, issue of captaincy and that of the influence of coach have all come under the scanner. Rumour mills are abuzz that wholesale changes in the team are only a matter of time. Infact, Tendulkar is now being viewed as the new captain. Times Now finds out whether the little master will indeed be the right choice...

It should be noted that Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has shouldered the responsibility twice in the past. However, the records aren't something that can do one of the greatest batsmen of all times proud of his captaincy. In 73 matches that Tendulkar has captained India, he could lead the side to only 23 wins with an abysmally low winning percentage of 31.

His batting performance also took a beating with average during his captaincy dipping to 37 compared to his career average of 44. Further, he could score only 6 centuries while leading the side.

Tendulkar's fitness and ageing body is yet another area of concern. One realises that leading the side has never really been an easy affair. It's for everybody to see how at present Mr. Dependable, Rahul Dravid has been turned into a villain.

He's being viewed as the captain who failed to take his side past the first round in the World Cup. A captain under whose leadership India fared the worst in cricket's mega event since 1992.

Tendulkar it should be noted is now fast approaching the end of his career. With recurring injuries in the elbow, shoulder, knee and back one wonders whether he will be willing to take the toughest job of the game.

Even if the little master gives his nod he will at best be a stop -gap arrangement. Will the BCCI take the risk? Will the man himself be ready for the job and prove his critics wrong? Will the man take on the captaincy for the last time and turn around the fortunes of Team India before he hangs up his boots...? The answer is just a few days away.

Meanwhile, talking to Times Now , Niranjan Shah, secretary (BCCI) expressed his surprise over the very suggestion of Sachin being the next captain and stated very clearly that no decision has been taken as yet to replace Rahul Dravid from the hot seat and that a final decision on the same as well as on the issue of coach would be taken only after the selection committee meets.

I feel this is wrong. Chappel only had 2 years with the team. He should have been given an extended run. He made the team competitive and he was very attacking. The players let him down big time and the BCCI should have done something about the players. Having said that i am sure the BCCI knows better and its their affair anyway so i give a damn.
