Twix, Mars, Snickers, Maltesers....not HALAL [Important Update!]

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6653175.stm

Quote:
Some of the UK's best-selling chocolate bars, such as Mars and Twix, will no longer be suitable for vegetarians.

Also affecting brands such as Snickers and Maltesers, owner Masterfoods said it had started to use animal product rennet to make its chocolate products.

Masterfoods said the change was due to it switching the sourcing of its ingredients and the admission was a "principled decision" on its part.

The Vegetarian Society said the company's move was "incomprehensible".

Masterfoods said it had started using rennet from 1 May and non-affected products had a "best before date" up to 1 October.

Rennet, a chemical sourced from calves' stomachs, is used in the production of whey.

It will now also be found in Bounty, Minstrels and Milky Way products, and the ice cream versions of all Masterfoods' bars.

"If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate," said Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods.

The Vegetarian Society said it was "extremely disappointed".

"At a time when more and more consumers are concerned about the provenance of their food, Masterfoods' decision to use non-vegetarian whey is a backward step," it said in a statement.

"Mars products are very popular with young people and many will be shocked to discover that their manufacture now relies on the extraction of rennet from the stomach lining of young calves," it added.

...I guess..we will only able to buy the imported versions.

Just heard this on the radio - the rep from The Vegetarians Society was seething in anger.

Mars hadnt intended to make this public - it was only when one of the Veg Societies members wrote to Mars asking them to confirm whether their confectionary was suitable for Veggies.

The reason is because Vegetable Rennet is apparently marginally more expensive than Animal Rennet - which is used to make the 'Whey' that goes inside their chocolates.

Oh well, thats another item that we cant touch!

At least our kids are likely to stay more healthy if they avoid these chocolates. Do you think this applies Worldwide e.g. buying a Mars from Pakistan, is that likely to be Veggie free or not???

This is where it gets confusing.

In the West, if its certified 'Suitable for Vegetarians' - then Muslims can happily eat the producr knowing it contains no animal derived products.

However, in our own countries, the use of Animal Rennet is likely to be OK because the animals were more than likely haraam - so, in that case, they WOULD NOT be suitable for vegetarians, but OK for Muslims!

The problem is - how do yopu know that the Mars/Snickers in Pak is using halal Animal products?

EG: Lets say you ar ain Pakistan and you want to buy a Snickers bar - there are 2 types. Pak produced (cheaper) or Export quality (from UK/Aus (more expensive).

I am not a scholar or such but I have read somwhere in the muslim food guide I think that such products which use animal renet from calfs etc (as long as its not pig), is permissible because the indgredient undergoes change when mixed with others. It says these products can not be classified haraam or halal but somwhere inbetween. It is permissible but for piouty it is advised to refrain from consuming it.

So basically if your strict muslim and pious you should try and avoid these products.

Please don't quote me from the above because I am saying the above from memory and advise people to do there own research and confirm whether the above is right.

Oxy, good point about whether the chocolates sold in Pakistan are also really halal. I dont think most people in Pakistan care, as long as the chocolate has not melted.

I can tell you 99% of soaps are made from animal fat which is from cow fat in particular. As far as my research tells me from a scholar etc and the muslim food guide we are allowed to use soap because the fat undergoes chemical change in its state when processed. The end product (soap) is not pure animal fat. However, from my thinking we don't obviously eat soap so it could be different ruling for food products.

Here in malaysia there is proper ministry or board setup which certifies EVERY imported food item as being Halal or not Halal. The halal products have a halal stamp on it. All chocolates here are halal, infact almost every food item in the country is halal. Non-halal food has a small section at selected supermarkets only.

I think Pakistan follows a similar system. Although I'm not sure, they dont have halal stamps.

Cheese is made from RENNET. And what 'floats' to the top is used to make WHEY.

Now most Cheese in the UK is produced using Vegetable Rennet.

But Mars clearly feel that the Animal Rennet is a cheaper source to to make their WHEY.

I dont eat red meat, and the thought of Animal Rennet from a Calf/Cow/Sheep or Lamb doesnt appeal to me one bit!

that will do for me

we are happy to buy from mr. khan/hussain/ali etc etc who buys piles of diseased chickens and mutton carcasses and flogs them as halal

I just can't beleive how tough you guys get it in UK. I mean we have so many Halal KFC, Maccas, Nandos, etc. in Australia and you guys have just opened 1 Halal McDonalds and even then it is only one burger that is Halal. Now Masterfood is going to start making all your fav choc bars non-halal. Considering the large Muslim population you guys have it makes no sense why they do not cater for Muslims.

I know. Plus the crappy weather they have and we really have it made
It is pretty hard to believe that we're that much better off though

ALERT - MARS PRODUCTS

Articles have recently appeared in the national press concerning the use of whey derived from animal rennet in Masterfoods confectionery.

We have been aware for many years that whey can be a by product of cheese-making and that, even today, animal rennet can be used in cheese manufacture.

Since whey derived from this source contains only trace amounts of rennet, it is permitted according to halacha.

There is therefore no problem with any of the Masterfoods products that are currently on the London Beth Din approved list.

although kosher is permissable but only when halal isn't available... and also they haven't stated where this rennet will be coming from ie. which animal.

Although process of kosher slaughtering is stricter...this aint no kosher process.

i am not going to have it unless its imported from abroad.

its not that bad, cos mars and snickers is disgusting anyway, twix and maltesers arnt bad but nothing compared to kitkat, what we still have.

Thanks Toony for the link. In fact this is what I read in the muslim food guide book back in 2001. So basically the article says that the animal rennet products are not haram (it does not say its halal either) but it says it permissible but for piety it is best to try and avoid it.

The only animal rennet products that are clearly haraam are from non halal animals eg pigs, dogs etc.

Question is - would I eat the meat from the calf? The answer is no.

So I am avoiding personally. Each to his own.

Breaking News!!

Mars in a U TURN!

Just heard on BBC Radio that they have backed down after being overwhelmed by the opposition to their use of animal rennet.

So you Muslims rejoice - we're gonna get fat together!

I wouldnt be surprised if it was down to the Vegetarian Society or whatever organistaioin the veggies are goverend by.

Lots of members - very powerful in consumer terms.

The 'veggie' pound counts for a lot in the UK

This is good news as I can continue putting on calories and having maltesers and ice cream prods. Waisay as someone pointed out it would have been ok anyway if the renent was from living calfs and not dead.
