AN ASIAN family was driven out of their new home just hours after they moved in by a violent racist mob.
Police had to rescue Mohammed Arif Mahmood and his nieces and nephews as a 20-strong gang of white teenagers and adults threw stones, eggs and hurled racist abuse as they attempted to move into a council house on Rochdale's Meadow Green estate.
Before the move Mr Mahmood had been assured by housing officers that the estate was "safe" for Asians and that there would be no racist backlash.
But Mr Mahmood is now so shaken by his ordeal that he has returned to his old home and vowed he will not move.
The incident will undermine the council's efforts to integrate Asians into estates seen as 'white only' in the past.
Said Mr Mahmood: "When I first arrived at the house nobody had seen us. But one of the neighbours walked past and saw that we were Asians, he looked at us suspiciously. Soon after this about 20 youths and men arrived with stones and eggs and started yelling racist abuse saying ****$ were not wanted on the estate. They also threw stones at my niece's car causing some damage.
"My family were with me to help me move and everybody was very frightened. Nobody in the street came out to help us.
"There was nothing we could do but take shelter in the house and dial 999 praying for the police to arrive early."
When the police arrived the yobs dispersed. The police then escorted the family off the estate.
Mr Mahmood decided to move his belonging back to his old home the same morning.
He was particularly upset over the assurances he received from a local housing officers.
He said: "The officer told me that it would be a safe estate for me to move into. I particularly asked him would there be any racist trouble and he said there wouldn't. If I was warned earlier I would never have moved in and put my family at risk. It is the duty of the housing officer to know the area and to bring in the right sort of people. There is no point moving an Asian onto this kind of white council estate, it is asking for trouble.
"Even the police officer who was called to the incident said he couldn’t understand why I was given a house on the estate. He said it was dangerous.”
A spokesperson from Rochdale Council Housing Department said they were "very concerned" over what happened to Mr Mahmood.
She said: "We would never knowingly put anybody in risk of racial, or any other form of abuse. There are two other Asian families living very near by to Green Meadows. They have lived there for three years and have never experienced this kind of abuse."

OMG-i hate peeps like this!-*** is the point- surely someone in their neighbourhood could of spoken up.....

police cant do much about this-peeps who are racist are racist-even in school of summat happens which is a racist attack/comment they can only suspend those involved....but the peeps involved, their mental thinking before AND after doesnt change...
