For whippy every SA and its players are over rated, and england are the best team in all formats. ( in this world cup he and his team are back, where they have been for at least 100 years.)

Great ODI player, if he can maintain his stats he'd be a contender for one of the greats of the game. Pretty far from that now but I wish him the best.

More so then the stats its the personality you have to like. Always comes across as a genuinely nice, humble individual. Might even be captaining SA in a few years time

The way he treated Aussie bowlers was amazing to watch ... They looked absolutely clueless bowling to him ... and the little passage when Amla got from 70 to 110, he must've hit boundary every other ball. And not one shot was a slog, all pretty classy shots. Amazing amazing player.

Give him a good bowling attack who stick to an off-stump line and he will be kept quiet (unlike numerous England players). Not yet seen anything to convince me otherwise.

A good player? Yes.

A very good player? Maybe.

A great player? No.

He does not have an air of greatness.

Smith, Kallis, de Villiers, Amla. That probably makes Amla the third best batsman in his team. Probably.

If I'd had to place the English and South African line ups in terms of order it'd be

Trott (currently) < Kallis < Smith < KP < Cook < Bell < Amla < AB de villiers.

So yeah basically England's batting is better. When you compare the English batsmen to Amla, most of them are better than him. But in terms of South African batting, Amla's pretty good, he's around 3rd.

Doesn't matter if you consider Trott and KP saffers or not, fact is their batting for England. And at the moment, the batsmen in the English team are better than the ones in the South African one.

And either way you look at it, Amla's good, but he's not as good as Trott, Kallis, KP, Smith, Cook or Bell. And no one really classes Cook or Bell as greats (at least not yet). So dunno why Amla should be considered one.

Having said that Amla's a very good player who seems to be improving all the time. If he keeps improving, he could well become a great. But he isn't one now. Too many batsmen better than him at the moment.

Whippy's "hatred" of anything South African is blatantly obvious (probably stems from the fact that his beloved "English" side cannot produce homegrown players that are good enough at international cricket?), but there was nothing racist about his comment. (Yes, I just defended Whippy!!!!!!!)

Bell averages 118 this year and 65 last year. Far better than Amla. In fact if you're going by the last two years and by simply averages, forget Amla, we should be comparing him to Bradman .

Cook, 84 this year, 58.5 last year.

Amla (though he's only played 2 matches this year), 44 this year, 78 last year. 2009 wasn't a particularly good year, he averaged only 30 something.

There, gone through the stats on cricinfo, and Amla is still behind them.

Lol people calm down.....these accusations of racism are extremely immature. On topic Amlas a great ODI player IMO, in tests he has his weaknesses, but who doesnt, I would put him in the Ian Bell, Michael Clarke, Gambhir category, an echelon below the truly top tier players such as Trott, Tendulkar, Dravid, yk etc. Hes a magnificent strokemaker but sometimes plays loose strokes, if he can tighten up around offstump he could become a true great of the game , remember people have questioned his technique before and look how he answered the critics , respect the beard.

Ofcourse we are good for the banter! The "bantier" the better! Nothing wrong with banter mate! As long as it does not become personal!

When are you starting your tour? If you want I can provide you with my email address (via the moderators route naturally!!) and we can maybe arrange to meet when in this beautiful country of mine?

Southern Africa means not just South Africa so where else will you be visiting?

I finish my BA in May and might need to save up for a while before I can go, but exchange rates are in my favour I guess. I've got a mate from Malawi so I'll be starting there - 5-10 countries in total I'd say, ending in South Africa which is the most fascinating of the lot to me. If we're both still networking by then I'll drop you a line!

Class act really. Making loads of runs and at a very good strike rate. Best batsman in World Cricket ATM.

In your eyes he is the top batsmen, but in SA eyes, AB Devilliers is our star (Amla and Kallis gets things going, then AB murders ppl, then we still have Albie Morkel as our ODI batting specialist in the lower order).

In my opinion Amla is a very good batsman, but needs to make an impression in T20 to be the Worlds best batsman. SA has kept him away from there in general, but it is not his style of batting.

I'm hooked on watching his batting, has a touch of panache and flair and most defiantly has an aura about him. Playing in such pivotal positions producing the goods in both formats and hardly breaks sweats.

Whippy you a believer yet? Or you waiting for the summer?
