BCCI directs team to protest umpiring decisions

BCCI directs team to protest umpiring decisions

January 02, 2008 18:50 IST

The Cricket Board on Wednesday directed the Indian team management to lodge a protest with ICC [Images] Match Referee Mike Procter against atrocious umpiring decisions made on the opening day of the second Test against Australia at Sydney.

"We have asked our team management to lodge a protest to the ICC match referee against the wrong umpiring decisions made today by Steve Bucknor. The wrong decisions made by Bucknor have been commented upon by all cricketers and analysts alike," said BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla.

"I am sure the International Cricket Council will be monitoring the matter in Dubai and take appropriate actions," Shukla said.

Australian batsman Andrew Symonds [Images] was caught by MS Dhoni [Images] off Ishant Sharma when on 30 but to the horror of the Indian team, Bucknor decided he was not out. Symonds went on to score an unbeaten 137 to spearhead a great recovery after the hosts were tottering at 134 for six at one stage.

Symonds was also given another 'life' by third umpire Bruce Oxenford who ruled him not out when he was stumped by Dhoni off Anil Kumble [Images] a little later.

Earlier, Australian skipper Ricky Ponting [Images] too was lucky to escape a caught behind appeal when on 17 before going on to complete a half century. Mark Benson was the umpire who did not uphold the confident appeal.

Steve Bucknor is a really good umpire. I dont know what has happened to him in this match.
Aleem Dar, Simon Taufel and Billy Bowden are the top 3 umps in my book. I dont think Steve Bucknor would put his rep on the line by being hard on the Indians. It really did seem loud so its understandable if an edge or two is missed but the 3rd ump missing the stumping is mind boggling. Lets see what Proctor does.

Why only name Bucknor? What about the 3rd umpire who got it wrong after watching replays

Exactly. On field umpire can have a legit excuse for missing an edge because of the crowd noise etc.. But 3rd umpires should have no room for error.

Finally...... umpires like Hair, Buckner deserve this.... if Buckner has any self-respect left, he shud retire after this game, if possible, after the 1st innings

He has been making one blunder after another for the last 10 years and they have been huge ones.

Yep, like the two against England in the 1992 world cup final.

Ponting was wrongly given out to Harbhajan in this match so India shouldnt really be complaining about the umpiring. Besides they made the same mistake again of not playing a third seamer in this match.

Ponting was out way before that.

Pointing was clean clean out at 16.. A big thick noise off the blade.... and still Benson didnt heard... Ponting ended up making 50+ ...

Well i guess everyone would agree with me on this one atleast. India are clearly missing Sreesanth on this tour. India played with 3 seamers against England and it paid dividends. Why did they opt for 2 spinners against Australia? Even Australia are only playing the sole spinner in Hogg? Indians need to bat themselves out of trouble and extremely lucky Australia havent even given Shaun Tait a chance yet.

BCCI can complain all they want, dont really see what it will do. Proctor will make a note of it and pass it on to his mates.

As usual nothing will happen.

Pakistan have lodged complaints in the past - nothing has changed. We've complained about David Constant, Daryl Hair, we've been robbed from a history making series victory in the West Indies, robbed in Hobart too. Its just brushed under the carpet.

Until technology is brought to the fore and used properly to help the umpires, then umpires will continue to make mistake after mistake.

The ICC needs to get its finger out and stop cricket from becoming a laughing stock.

One point i would like to add it that the Umpiring faults in this match have caused much more media coverage than any against Pakistan.

Do what the great Inzy did. If such poor umpiring continues in the second inning then India should screw the series and head home. BCCI should have enough in its accounts to pay the compensation to Aussies for the series.
